MINNESOTA BARS
For chocolate-peanut butter lovers! This recipe is a family tradition. Our family couldn't wait to get Minnesota bars mailed to us from Grandma every Christmas. My sister and I would also make them with our grandmother when we would visit. I don't know where the name came from--my dad spent some of his childhood in Minnesota.

- Bake at 375°F for 12-15 minutes. Watch carefully--should be soft and light brown, a little harder on the edges (it gets stiffer as it cools).

50 THINGS YOU NEED TO EAT IN MINNESOTA BEFORE YOU DIE
From spoonuniversity.com
Estimated Reading Time 7 minsPublished 2016-08-14
- Snuffy Burger from Snuffy’s Malt Shop. Snuffy’s serves classic diner food for cheap, and it is definitely a Minnesota must. The Snuffy Burger is a classic, but you can’t leave unless you’ve had onion rings and a malt.
- Patticake from Yum! Kitchen and Bakery. Yum! is nothing short of sensational. They change their menu often, so you’ll never get sick of what they have to offer (not that that could ever happen).
- Carbonara from Loring Pasta Bar. The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is super fun and eclectic. Loring used to be an old drug store, and most of the store’s old decor is still intact.
- Arugula Detox Salad from Agra Culture. With minimalist wood and steel decor, the interior of Agra Culture is just as beautiful as its food, which happens to be super pretty and super healthy.
- Napoli Pizza from Punch Pizza. I could probably eat every meal at Punch (yes, even breakfast). All of their pizzas are flash-cooked in an 800°F oven to get that famous leopard crust, and to get anything better, you would actually have to go to Italy.
- Naughty Waffle from Black Coffee and Waffle Bar. This is actually the most basic place to brunch in the state of Minnesota, but it’s famous for a reason.
- Spaetzel and Cheese Casserole from The Black Forest Inn. The Black Forest Inn is an authentic German restaurant with some serious character. The menu is organized into categories of “Very German” and “Schnitzels”, which I think is really cute.
- Blueberry Pancakes from Tony’s Diner. Tony’s Diner is located on the University of Minnesota campus, right in the heart of Dinkytown, and it’s pretty much hoppin’ all of the time (especially on a game day).
- Jucy Lucy from Matt’s Bar. For those that haven’t had the pleasure of being acquainted with a Jucy Lucy, it is the genius creation of a burger with cheese INSIDE of it.
- Anything from Pizzeria Lola. Pizzeria Lola is charming and quirky. None of the plates match, it has a photo booth for customers to use while they wait for their table, and the pizza is amazing.

- Little Tijuana (Whittier) Coming in at number two on the list, we have Little Tijuana or Little T’s as the locals call it. Their knock-out food is not the only thing they offer.
- The Monte Carlo (North Loop-Central Minneapolis) Established in 1906, this is one of the most renowned bars and eatery’s in Minneapolis. Anyone looking for a swanky night out should start it at The Monte Carlo.

- Betty Danger’s Country Club (Northeast Minneapolis Arts District) Coming in at number five of the top ten best bars in downtown Minneapolis is Betty Danger’s Country Club.
- Psycho Suzi’s (Northeast Minneapolis Arts District) Voted one of the best tiki bars in America by Food Network, Psycho Suzi’s is a destination you should be sure to visit in Minneapolis.
- Parlour (North Loop-Near North) Well known for their stylish takes on cocktails, Parlour creates a fresh outlook on a classic drink. The foundation of classics includes the perfect martini and Parlours’ take on an old-fashioned and gimlet.
- TILT Pinball Bar (Whittier) This bar has everything a full-grown kid could want, alcohol and pinball. We can’t think of too many other destined combinations besides this.
- Up-Down (Whittier-Uptown) If you are looking to unleash your inner child, this is the place to go. Boasting more than 50 classic arcade games from the 1980s and ’90s, four pinball machines, four skeeball alleys, a Nintendo 64 projected onto a massive screen, and life-sized Jenga and Connect 4.
- moto-i ramen and sake (Whittier-Uptown) Coming in at number ten on the list is a local favorite, moto-i. This bar is unique in and of itself. This is one of the only sumo themed bars in the Minneapolis area, if not all of Minnesota.

- Walleye. Walleye is the state fish in a state where everyone fishes. It is flakey, light, and delicious. If you visit during lent you MUST MUST MUST hit up a fish fry at the VFW for all you can eat Walleye slathered in tartar sauce, ketchup and lemon.
- Tater tot hotdish. Imagine trudging around outside in -30 weather (an unfortunate reality in a polar vortex world). When you finally get inside, you need a dinner that’s going to make you feel warm again.
- Lefse. From our Scandinavian ancestors comes the most delicious of carbs: lefse. It’s a soft, paper thin bread that you can eat in a variety of ways. I prefer to spread butter on it, sprinkle on some sugar and then roll it up and eat it as dessert.
- Swedish Meatballs. You may have noticed a trend in this list: all food in Minnesota is a shade of white. Color isn’t exactly our forte. The meatballs are made from ground beef, chopped onions and breadcrumbs and are served with gravy over mashed potatoes with lingonberry jam and pickled cucumbers on the side.
- Venison. A time honored tradition in Minnesota culture is deer hunting season where most of the men I know disappear for long weekends and the women who aren’t into hunting are left to host wine-fueled girls nights in empty homes.
- Grain belt beer. There’s a ton of breweries in Minnesota and my favorite beer here is probably Summit IPA but I will always feel the most loyalty toward Grain Belt.
- Booya. Of all Minnesota foods this one is the closest to my heart. It’s a community tomato-based stew that you cook outside in a giant drum. It typically requires a group of people to make it because of how many vegetables you have to cut up.
- Something on a stick. The Minnesota state fair is basically held for the sole purpose of inventing zany foods that you can put on a stick. Forget corn dogs, we are talking Snickers on a stick, spaghetti on a stick, beer on a stick, and my favorite, Northwoods salad on-a-stick (mozzarella cheese and cherry tomatoes over chilled wild rice).
- A mayonnaise-based “salad” The irony of mayo-based salads is not lost on us, but at every family gathering there are an assortment of Jello salads, salads that contain cut-up snickers bars, and salads that are 90% mayo.
10 NORTH SHORE MINNESOTA BARS AND BREWERIES - LITTLE BLUE ...
From littlebluebackpack.com
Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
- Hoops Brewing—Duluth. Best for: a quick stop in Duluth before you hit the scenic byway. A large, classic beer hall located in the historic Canal Park. Hoops Brewing has big community tables with floor-to-ceiling windows that show off their entire brewing system.
- Castle Danger Brewery—Two Harbors. Best for: breaking up the North Shore drive with a beer. Located in Two Harbors, Castle Danger is a great stop shortly after making it onto Highway 61.
- Green Door—Beaver Bay. Best for: catching the game on Sunday Funday. This dive bar is so much fun. It could have been the nearly 2 shots of vodka in both Bloody Mary’s the bartender poured me, but regardless, I won’t forget drinking (somehow), watching the Vikings, and eating cheap frozen pizza here.
- Papa Charlie’s Tavern & Stage—Lutsen. Best for: warming up after a day of skiing. Ready for a sports bar? Here is one of your best options! Papa Charlie’s has big-screen TVs, pool tables, live music, and pretty mountain views.
- Gunflint Tavern—Grand Marais. Best for: enjoying live outdoor music with a beverage. Gunflint Tavern is both modern and rustic with an extensive beer menu, seasonal cocktails, and tons of fresh food options.
- Birch Terrace—Grand Marais. Best for: drinking too much light beer. You might not find this place on too many Grand Marais recommendations lists. We were having a tough time getting in anywhere (welcome to Grand Marais in the fall…) and settled for Birch Terrance.
- Voyager Brewing—Grand Marais. Best for: drinking craft beer on a patio. One of the busiest places in Grand Marais. Voyager Brewing has a rooftop patio that overlooks Lake Superior with the best seats in the house.
- Poplar Haus—Gunflint Trail. Best for: hand-crafted cocktails on the deck overlooking Poplar Lake. This is one of the more trendy and new-age restaurants/bars on the North Shore.
- Gunflint Lodge—Gunflint Trail. Best for: enjoying a relaxing beer in the woods overlooking the water. If you are going to make your way up Gunflint Trail for Poplar Haus, you might as well drive the extra 5 miles to check out Gunflint Lodge too!
- Hungry Jack’s—Gunflint Trail. Best for: chillen out with a beer in hand. Another stop on your Gunflint Trail bar crawl! While the other bars on the trail give you both trendy and a wilderness lodge vibe, this is your classic bar, located in the basement of the Hungry Jack’s Lodge, 2 miles off the Gunflint Trail.

- Butcher & the Boar's Beer Garden. Downtown. Okay, we’re not talking about the main restaurant here (which we also adore), instead we’re specifically talking about their incredible year-round beer garden.
- The Sample Room. Northeast. Sometimes the last thing we want is a brain-bleed-inducing beer list. Sometimes we just want a smallish selection of really delicious beers, and that’s what The Sample Room does.
- George & the Dragon. Southwest. The only downfall to this place is that it can be an absolute bear to wrestle your way into. Aside from being incredibly popular, they have a great selection of well-thought-out taps that're perfect for a leisurely afternoon of beer drinking.
- Pat’s Tap. Lyndale. We love a bar that’s proud to offer beer in a can, and these guys have an incredible selection, from the hyper-local to the incredibly foreign.
- The Rabbit Hole. Midtown. When in Midtown, it’s impossible not hit up The Rabbit Hole. It’s a modern pub with a splash Korean-nouveau, so really, what’s not to love?!
- Pig & Fiddle. Southwest. Sister to St. Paul’s Muddy Pig, this South Minneapolis pub was one of the first to start showcasing a variety of locally brewed suds.
- Muddy Waters. Uptown. It’s weird to think that just a few short years ago this place was a small, cramped coffee shop located a few short blocks away from where it currently sits, but now it’s all grown up and it’s got the beer to show for it.
- Red Cow. Southwest. One of the newest and best burger joints in Minneapolis also happens to be one of the best hiding holes to sit back and throw down a variety of craft beers.
- Town Hall Brewery. West Bank. Not only does this place brew a healthy variety of their own beers, but they also have rotating guest taps designed to please any beer drinker.
- Buster’s on 28th. Powderhorn. Featuring an incredible amount of rotating craft taps and the ability to mix and match to create your own custom flight, this South Minneapolis pub has got the goods.
