- Measure and mark up the area. To start installing your patio pavers, you’ll need to measure and mark out the area with tape to show where the patio will be and to dig out the soil there.
- Prepare the ground for pavers. If the area is currently lawn or long grass, it’s worth cutting the turf into strips using a spade and then rolling it up.
- Prepare the underneath of paving slabs with a sub-base. You do need to put something under paving slabs. Paving slabs should not be laid directly on to soft ground or grass.
- Check your base over. Cover with a thin layer of builder's sand. It's really important your base is completely flat and level at this point, so check that now.
- Make up the mortar. Next, make your mortar by mixing five parts builder's sand with one part cement and adding enough water to create a dough-like consistency.
- Prep your paving slabs. Dampen your paving slabs by spraying them with water from a spray bottle or lightly sprinkling them from a watering can. If you lay dry slabs, they'll dry out the mortar mix too quickly.
- Start paving. Using a trowel, place a dollop of mortar where the centre of your first slab will go. Always start in a corner and work outwards. Place the slab on top of the mortar and gently tap in with a mallet.
- Level up as you go. As you go along, check that the paving slabs are level by placing a spirit level over them. It's much easier to correct any unevenness now.
- Leave time to dry. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours and do not walk over the patio.
- Finish the job. Once dry, finish your patio by filling in the gaps with more mortar. Mix more sand and cement in the 5:1 ratio, but do not wet, or it will stain your slabs.

- Before You Begin. Flagstones, bricks, or pavers are options to make a backyard concrete patio more than a cold, gray slab. To start creating a patio for your yard, pick a spot where you want to build it and sketch a basic plan.
- Choosing Flagstone. Flagstone paver patio pieces are fractured or cleft into flat slabs of various lengths, with a thickness of 2 inches or more and random edges.
- What You Need for the Sand Method. Sledgehammer. Yardstick. Shovel. Crushed limestone or gravel. Tamper. Builder's sand. Rake. Edging. Utility knife or saw. 10-inch metal spikes.
- Step 1: Remove the Old Patio. Determine the size and shape of your new patio. Note: Wear safety goggles and use a sledgehammer when removing the old patio.
- Step 2: Excavate Accordingly. To facilitate drainage, excavate the area to a depth of at least 8 inches. The finished patio should be level with the surrounding yard.
- Step 3: Add a Base. Add base material. Gravel is good, but crushed limestone works even better to prevent settling. The deeper your base level, the less you'll see your patio shift during winter.
- Step 4: Create a Solid Foundation. Tamp after adding a couple of inches of base material to ensure a solid foundation. The compacted base should be 4 inches deep.
- Step 5: Add Sand for Drainage. Level a 2-inch layer of builder's sand with a rake. Sand helps with drainage and makes it easier to position the pavers and level the patio.
- Step 6: Install Edging. Install edging around the perimeter of the patio, anchoring with 10-inch metal spikes. Cut and bend the edging as needed.
- Step 7: Add Paving Materials. Lay your paving materials over the bed of sand. Slide the individual pieces close together for a clean look; leave bigger gaps if you'd like to plant groundcover, such as creeping thyme, between them.
