2 cups dark brown sugar
2 cups hot brewed espresso
2 cups dark rum (such as Bacardi®)
1 vanilla bean

Steps:

  • Stir brown sugar into espresso in a bowl or container with a spout until dissolved; stir in rum. Pour mixture into a clean, dark bottle; add vanilla bean. Seal bottle tightly with a lid and let sit for 1 month before drinking.

2 cups water
1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup instant coffee
1 3/4 liters high quality vodka
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 whole vanilla bean

Steps:

  • Combine the brown sugar, granulated sugar and water in a small sauce pan. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until sugar is dissolved.
  • Remove from the heat. Stir in the coffee. Allow to cool completely.
  • Pour into a large plastic container with a lid. Add the vodka, vanilla flavoring and vanilla bean.
  • Cover and let stand for two to three weeks or until fully aged. Kahlua, when properly stored, can last safely for up to a few years.

4 cups sugar
1/2 cup instant coffee crystals
1/4 cup vanilla extract
26 ounces vodka

Steps:

  • Bring water and sugar to a boil.
  • Add to coffee crystals just enough water to dissolve them.
  • Add coffee to water and sugar and boil for 5 minutes, being careful not to let it boil over.
  • Cool completely, then add vanilla and vodka.
  • Mix well.

This recipe I love to make around Thanksgiving to drink or give as presents at Christmastime. The longer you wait the better it is, try and wait 4 weeks. I got this recipe from one of my own concoctions from trying several different recipes.

4 cups water
1 cup instant coffee crystals (such as Folgers® Classic Roast)
2 cups light brown sugar
2 cups lightly packed dark brown sugar
1 (750 milliliter) bottle 190 proof grain alcohol (such as Everclear®)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and halved

Steps:

  • Combine water and instant coffee in a pot; bring to a boil. Stir light brown sugar and dark brown sugar into coffee, reduce heat, and simmer, stirring every 15 minutes, for 3 hours. Remove from heat and cool completely.
  • Pour coffee mixture into a clean, large glass jar. Add grain alcohol, vanilla extract, and vanilla bean; cover with a tight-fitting lid. Let sit in a dark place, shaking occasionally, for 1 month. Divide into bottles, leaving a piece of vanilla bean in each.

This recipe wa kindly shared by DF whose DH has made since the beginning of time. She says, "It is Smooooth!". Needs at least 10 days to steep - going to get a pint of Everclear started to have for Thanksgiving.

6 cups coffee, fresh brewed (fill filter to the top with ground coffee)
3 cups sugar
1 pint Everclear alcohol
1/2 vanilla bean

Steps:

  • Brew a pot of coffee - as strong as you can make.
  • Add 3 cups of sugar to coffee & stir to dissolve.
  • Once cooled, add pint of Everclear to coffee/sugar mix .
  • Store in 1/2 gallon glass container for at least 10 days. I plan to split between 2 - 1 quart Mason jars, dividing the vanilla bean between between the two jars.

I use to make this all the time back in the early 80's around the holidays to have on hand and give as gifts. 'Tastes like store bought'. Super EZ to make! Then just add half & half or milk, even 2% milk if you like over ice and it's good over ice cream too. As a Smoothie add a cup of ice to cup of Kahlua and milk in blender, blend till smooth. I've had this recipe scratched on a small piece of paper for so many years I don't remember where it came from.

6 cup(s) sugar
2 ounce(s) tasters choice instant coffee (it makes a difference)
8 teaspoon(s) vanilla (pure) extract
1 quart(s) 180-proof pure grain vodka

Steps:

  • Boil 1 quart water. Add sugar, bring back to boil and boil for 1 minute. Let cool.
  • Boil other quart of water, Add 'Tasters Choice' instant coffee. Let cool.
  • Let both mixtures come to room temp. Mix together and add vanilla and VODKA. Fill your bottles. That's it! Pretty easy. Makes 3 about Quarts

  • Put both sugars into a heat-proof bowl and pour the boiling water over it. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved then add the instant coffee. Stir again until dissolved then cool to room temperature.
  • Once the sugar water has cooled, slice your vanilla pod along the side. Scrape the gooey insides out with a knife and stir it into the sugar water.
  • Pour the vodka into the mix and stir gently. Then, using a funnel, pour the coffee liqueur into the bottles and seal. If any of the black vanilla is stuck to the bottom of the bowl just spoon it out and into the bottles. That's a whole lot of flavor that you don't want to miss out on.
  • Stand your bottles of homemade Kahlua upright in a dark place and wait about two to three weeks before drinking it. This is to give the flavors, especially the vanilla, time to infuse. If you absolutely can't wait that long it's fine to drink any time after you make it.
