From realsimple.com
  • Distilled White Vinegar. Add one cup of distilled white vinegar to one gallon of hot water. Submerge the white fabric into the mixture and allow it to soak overnight, then launder as usual.
  • Lemons. The citric acid in lemons can bleach fabrics and works well to whiten cotton, linen, and polyester fibers. Mix a half cup of lemon juice (from about four lemons) into one gallon of hot water.
  • Baking Soda. Stir one cup of baking soda into one gallon of boiling water, then remove from heat and add the dingy white clothes. Let them soak for at least an hour or overnight.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide. Safe to use on all washable fabrics, hydrogen peroxide is a mild form of oxygen bleach. Use the same 3 percent solution sold in drugstores for first aid and add one cup to the washing machine's bleach dispenser.
  • Bluing. Mrs. Stewart's Liquid Bluing, $5, amazon.com. An old-fashioned product that comes in either a powdered or liquid formula, bluing adds a trace of blue iron pigment that makes the fabric appear whiter to the human eye.

  • Bleach. Most bleaches, such as chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, and hydrogen peroxide, break up stains through a chemical action called oxidation. Detergents remove stains while bleaches turn stains colorless by chemically altering their molecules.
  • Bluing Liquid. Bluing liquid (which contains Prussian blue, or ferric ferrocyanide, and water combined) helps keep whites sparkling white. The liquid adds a subtle hint of blue to the fabric to make it appear whiter and brighter.
  • Enzyme Presoaks. Enzyme presoaks ($6, Walmart) are great for getting out tough protein stains. They're also helpful with whitening and brightening, because they remove stains that cause yellowing.
  • Lemon Juice. Lemon juice is a natural laundry whitener and freshener. Add one cup to your washing machine water along with your detergent. Add your laundry and wash as usual.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, helps deodorize and soften your clothes. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda along with your regular liquid laundry detergent at the start of the wash cycle.
