- Hair Spray. Honestly, we're not quite sure how to feel about this one—mildly horrified? But according to Bustle, this convenient removal method will definitely work in a pinch.
- Vinegar and Lemon Juice. Vinegar is extremely acidic and widely known as a healthier alternative to your typical household cleaner. So why not put it on your nails, too?
- Hydrogen Peroxide and Hot Water. A mild antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide is another option for removing your nail polish in a pinch. Plus, it's one of those random products that nearly everyone has stored away somewhere at home (try looking under the bathroom sink or near other cleaning/medicinal supplies).
- Rubbing Alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is another way to remove nail polish if you're in a pinch. Since alcohol is a solvent, it can help break things down, or in this case dissolve polish.
- Toothpaste. Believe it or not, toothpaste works for more than just your teeth. This household product can also act as a polish remover. White toothpaste works best for this method as it contains ethyl acetate, which is also found in nail polish remover.
- Non-Acetate Polish Remover. You may not know it, but there are plenty of non-acetate polish removers on the market. A popular alternative is soy-based polish remover, which contains nongreasy oils that act as a solvent to break down nail polish.

- Baking soda. Is there anything baking soda can’t do? Because it’s slightly abrasive, baking soda can help break down and buff away nail polish. Simply sprinkle some on your nails, and use a damp dish towel or old toothbrush to massage it in.
- Alcohol. Straight alcohol helps to break down the polish much like acetone, but without the harsh chemicals. Reach for either 80+ proof vodka or straight rubbing alcohol and a few cotton balls.
- White vinegar + lemon. An alternative to alcohol, the acid in vinegar is said to soften nail polish while the lemon juice boosts its effectiveness and gives it a fresh(er) scent.
- Toothpaste. A dollop of toothpaste is all you need to get rid of lingering polish. Simply dab a pea-sized amount onto your nails and buff in a circular motion using a paper towel.
- Hydrogen peroxide. In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide with ¼ cup of hot water, and soak for 10 minutes. Once the polish has softened slightly, gently scrape it off as best you can using your fingers, a cuticle stick, or the back of a small spoon.
- Hairspray. If you’re specifically looking for natural alternatives, I’ll admit that this method may seem like cheating. But hairspray often contains chemicals that act like paint thinner, so it makes a great nail polish remover in a pinch.
- Peel it off. This isn’t the most mind-blowing of methods, but sometimes the easiest thing to do is just peel it off. Personally, I love this method because it’s even a little fun, if you’re into that sort of thing.

- Vinegar-orange juice soak. In terms of DIY-friendly removers, Amy Lin, the founder of sundays—a nail care brand focused on wellness—touts this natural recipe.
- Hand sanitizer. "As hand sanitizers are high in alcohol concentration, they can be effective in removing nail polish," Lin says. Especially if you have a sanitizer with 75% isopropyl alcohol, as the ingredient effectively dissolves the pigment (note: That's why pure rubbing alcohol works as well).
- Toothpaste. In a total pinch, a traditional toothpaste makes a fine remover. That's because most toothpastes have ethyl acetate, which can effectively break down the varnish (it's also found in most polish removers).
- Hydrogen peroxide and hot water. The handy brown bottle is just as fab at removing polish as it does the occasional clothing stain. Although, you should always use a diluted version (most OTC options come in a 3% concentration) and apply moisturizer immediately after.
