- Assess The Damage. Using a sponge and water, we first wiped down the inside and outside of the tub to assess what was superficial dirt or soap scum, and what might be a deeper stain.
- Clean The Inside With Vinegar. To remove some of the lighter stains, we mixed a solution of 1-part white vinegar and 1-part water in a spray bottle and coated the inside of the tub.
- Give The Inside A Heavy-Duty Scrub. A few readers had recommended Bar Keeper’s Friend Soft Cleanser but the initial results weren’t great. We followed the instructions of applying it to a damp surface, letting it sit for a few minutes, and then scrubbing it off with an ordinary sponge.
- Sand The Outside. Unlike the inside, the outside of our tub had a lot more flaking rust and paint. Our first step was to sand the outside get rid of the already flaking paint so we could have a relatively smooth surface to paint.
- Paint With Clean Metal Primer. After a wipe down with a clean towel, we were ready to prime. Based on a long conversation with the pro at our local paint desk, we chose this oil-based Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer to do the job.
- Paint The Outside. Once the primer is fully dry, you can paint the outside in the color of your choice. We considered a whole range of colors for the outside of the tub, but we landed on Riverway by Sherwin-Williams.

- Find a Tub. Look for a tub with intact porcelain enamel. The enamel is the hard, shiny surface that coats the inside of the tub. The outside of the tub can be sanded and painted, but the enamel on the inside of the tub is more difficult to restore.
- Gather Supplies. Here’s what we used. heavy duty respirator. safety glasses. 4″ sanding disc (drill mount) stripping tool. shop vac. wire brush. sand paper.
- Scrub the Tub. We actually did this part last, unintentionally. We had flipped the tub over and raised it to sit on top of a makeshift work table, and let me tell you, it’s not easy to flip a cast iron bath tub!
- Sand the Exterior. Once again, Greg executed this step. He did it all in just a few hours! IMPORTANT: Please wear a serious respirator for this step.
- Prime the Exterior. IMPORTANT: I recommend a serious respirator for this step, too. And glasses again. Save. And now for my part: I primed the tub exterior with two coats of Rustoleum Professional Primer.
- Paint the Exterior. I did this part, too! See, I did help. With a small roller, I gave the outside of the tub three coats of this white protective enamel.
- Sand the Feet. Sanding the feet can be tricky: unlike the tub itself, the feet are small and rounded, with crevices and extra details that make it hard to achieve a smooth surface.
- Paint the Feet. Again, the feet are totally different from the huge, smooth tub, so a roller isn’t going to work. I used a small paint brush to paint the feet, and I kept adding another coat until they looked well covered, about 3-4 coats.
- Attach the Feet. Now it’s time to attach the feet to the tub! If you’re lucky, your tub will come with all the little necessary parts. Our tub had all four of the little plates but was missing one bolt.
- Choose a Faucet. For us, this part of the process took longer than the entire bathroom renovation project, mostly because of the special-order finish I chose for our bathroom but also because of the unbelievable ineptitude of the bathroom designer who “helped” us.
