OVERNIGHT OATS
Oats are high in a fibre called beta glucan that has been shown in some cases to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar. With the addition of a multivitamin (which contains Vitamin B to help in energy metabolism and Vitamin A to help support immune function) and high-protein foods like Greek yogurt or protein powder, this breakfast is an easy way to get your morning started.

HOW TO MAKE OVERNIGHT OATS: 12 TIPS FOR A PERFECT ...
From vitacost.com
Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
- Find a sturdy glass jar. A classic mason jar is the perfect container for overnight oats. Find one with a tight lid to keep your breakfast safe on your commute.
- Choose your oats. The oats you choose will affect the texture and taste of your breakfast. If you’re into a smooth, doughier texture, then opt for quick oats.
- Get the ratio right. When making overnight oats, the exact ratio of milk to oats depends on what kind of oats you are using. So, a useful trick is to add enough milk to fully cover your oats, but not too much to drown them.
- Add some protein. Oats offer a moderate amount of protein per serving, but if you want to make sure you’re getting a complete protein, add a ½ scoop of your favorite protein powder.
- Add some fat. Not only will this add mega flavor to your oats, but it will keep you fuller longer and help sustain energy. Almond butter and peanut butter are my two favorites, but don’t be afraid to try some sunflower butter, cashew butter or even flavored ghee.
- Add some texture. For a more voluminous, crunchy oat experience, feel free to add chia seeds, flax meal, protein powder or wheat germ. These will add even more texture while adding essential micro and macronutrients.
- Keep it creamy. For the creamiest oats make sure to use a hearty milk, like dairy milk or oat milk.
- Make it sweet. Unless you are one of those people who can get by with unsweetened oatmeal, you are likely going to want a touch of sweetener. While honey and maple syrup are great options that mix easily, stevia drops are a sugar-free option that taste great and will help reduce blood sugar spikes in the morning.
- Add a jolt. If you have an early morning and know you’re going to need an extra pick-me-up, sub out some of the milk for coffee. You can use brewed coffee, cold brew or dehydrated grounds.
- Save toppings for the a.m. While the oats need to soak overnight to reach their best texture, it is best to leave adding your toppings until the morning.

- Add your additional ingredients either the night before or in the morning when ready to eat. I tend to add in the morning, as the oats will last up to 3 days without the toppings. If you want to save time, and plan to eat after just one night, adding the night before is fine.

- Mix together all the ingredients for the overnight oats base in a 1 pint/2 cup mason jar or 2 cup container of your choice.
- Choose which flavor you’d like and mix the ingredients into the overnight oats base. You can leave any of the fruit on top as well, but I recommend mixing the spices in. If you’re using sliced banana as a topping, add that right before serving.
- For the apple pie version, add the chopped apple to a small saucepan along with the cinnamon and orange juice. Bring the mixture to a simmer, partially cover with a lid and simmer on low until the apple is tender and the liquid has mostly evaporated, 6-8 minutes.
- Let the apple pie mixture cool before stirring half of it into your overnight oats base, and top with the remaining half, then refrigerate overnight.

- Pick a Container. A large jar or bowl is perfect for batch-making a large amount of overnight oats at once. Or you can use cute, individual Mason jars to divvy up a pre-portioned breakfast that’s truly grab-and-go.
- Add Oats Plus (optional) Chia Seeds. Make sure to pick rolled oats for the best texture that’s creamy and just right. Though the name implies your oats should sit overnight, you can get away with a little as a two-hour soak!
- Add a Base Liquid. You’ll want a 2:1 ratio of liquid to oats for an appealing consistency. The consistency may look thin, but the oats will soak up the liquid overnight.
- Add Flavor Enhancers. Here’s where you need to choose: will those overnight oats be savory or sweet? Then, think about your favorite flavors. Do you like apple cinnamon, pumpkin pie, or chocolate peanut butter?
- Add Sweet (or Savory) Mix-Ins. Finally, you’ll want to give your overnight oats more body and texture with a variety of mix-ins! Don’t be pressured to add all of the mix-ins.
