  • Start your habit change process by building awareness. Pay attention to your current habits and identify one that you want to change in some way. Notice your typical procedures step by step.
  • All change begins with making choices. What habits do you like? Which habits are you willing to take the steps to change?
  • Attach a new habit or behavior to something you already do regularly. One strategy, called habit stacking (Clear, 2018), connects a new habit with a long-established habit.
  • Gain clarity about what you want to do and how you will do it. Be specific and bite off just a small chunk. Research suggests beginning with a specific implementation intention or if-then plan (Oettingen & Gollwitzer, 2010).
  • Start with a simple step. Let yourself know that one small step at a time can add up to powerful new habits and behaviors. James Clear recommends “the two-minute rule” as you begin a new habit (2018).

  • Set a specific goal. The way you define the goal you hope to turn into a habit does matter. Goals like “meditate regularly” are too abstract, research has shown.
  • Create a detailed, cue-based plan. Now that you have established a specific goal, it’s time to think about what will cue you to follow through. Scientists have proven that you’ll make more progress toward your goal if you decide not just what you’ll do, but when you’ll be cued to do it, as well as where you’ll do it and how you’ll get there.
  • Make it fun to repeat. When we set out to build a new habit, most of us overestimate our willpower and set a course for the most efficient path to achieving our end goal.
  • Foster flexibility. By the time we put a behavior on autopilot, a lot of us fall into fairly consistent routines, tending to exercise, study or take our medication at the same time of day and in the same place.
  • Find the right kind of social support. This step is obvious but sometimes overlooked. Seek out social support. Social support isn’t just about having cheerleaders and people to hold you accountable – though both can add value, so I’d suggest telling your friends and family about your goals.
