HOMEMADE MINCEMEAT RECIPE

Homemade Mincemeat Recipe image

This traditional Homemade Mincemeat Recipe has all of the warm spicy flavors of the stuff from the grocery store but has 1000 times the flavor. Perfect for pies or as a topping on Fall desserts.

Provided by Two Sisters Crafting

Categories     Desserts

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 19

1/4 cup Butter
1 cup Water (or Unsweetened Apple Juice)
3 medium Granny Smith Apples (peeled, cored, and chopped)
1/2 cup Dark Raisins
1/2 cup Golden Raisins
1/2 cup Dried Currants
1/2 cup Dried Cranberries
1/2 cup Dried Dates (or Figs)
1/2 cup Dried Apricots
Zest of one lemon (you can use an orange instead)
2/3 cups Brown Sugar
1/3 cup Light or Dark Rum
1/3 cup Brandy
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon Ground Cloves
1/8 teaspoon Ground Ginger
1/4 teaspoon Allspice
1/4 teaspoon Salt

Steps:

  • In a large pan, melt butter.
  • Add water, fruits, sugar, spices, and alcohol.
  • Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. Once it boils reduce the heat to low and cook for approximately 30 mins. Continue to stir often.
  • The mince is ready when the majority of the liquid has boiled out.
  • Let the mince cool completely and then transfer and store in an airtight container.
  • The mince should be kept in the refrigerator. The longer you store it the more the flavors will develop.
  • The mince will keep for a month if you take some steps. Check on it every week or so and add a tablespoon of rum or brandy and give it a good stir. If you don't take this step the mince will only last a week.

SPECIAL MINCEMEAT

SPECIAL MINCEMEAT image

I prefer the flavour of butter to suet in mincemeat - which makes it suitable for vegetarians - but use suet if you wish. The butter makes the mincemeat look slightly cloudy in the jar but this disappears once the mincemeat is cooked in mince pies, etc.

Provided by shouball

Number Of Ingredients 12

175 g raisins
175 g sultanas
175 g dried cranberries
100 g mixed peel
1 small cooking apple (peeled, cored and finely chopped)
125 g butter (cut into cubes)
50 g whole blanched almonds (roughly chopped)
225 g light muscovado sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp mixed spice
finely grated rind and juice of 1 lemon
200 ml brandy (rum or sherry)

Steps:

  • Makes 4 x 370g jars
  • Measure all of the ingredients except the alcohol into a large pan. Heat gently, allowing the butter to melt, then simmer very gently, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes.
  • Allow the mixture to cool completely then stir in the brandy, rum or sherry.
  • Spoon the mincemeat into sterilised jam jars, seal tightly, label and store in a cool place.
  • TIP - I no longer use cellophane tops or wax paper. I simply use clean sterilised screw-top jars saved from bought marmalade or jam.175g currants

TRADITIONAL MINCEMEAT

Traditional mincemeat image

Try making your mincemeat well in advance of Christmas to give the flavours maximum time to mature

Provided by James Martin

Categories     Treat

Time 20m

Yield Makes about 2kg (4 x 500ml jars)

Number Of Ingredients 9

250g raisins
375g currants
100ml brandy
zest of 1 lemon, juice of ½
300g shredded suet
250g dark brown sugar
85g chopped mixed peel
½ small nutmeg, grated
1 large Bramley apple, peeled and grated

Steps:

  • Soak the raisins and currants in the brandy and lemon juice for 1 hr until plumped up, then drain and set the brandy aside. Mix all the ingredients together in the order given, then pour in the brandy when everything else is well mixed. Spoon and press into sterilised jars, to exclude any air (the easiest way to sterilise jars is to run them through a dishwasher on its hottest setting). Cover and leave for at least a fortnight. Will keep in the fridge for up to 6 months.

MINCEMEAT

Mincemeat image

Mincemeat is a traditional English treat that is usually used as filling for mince pies during Christmas, but it tastes great mixed with vanilla ice cream, as well. This recipe uses butter instead of the traditional suet, which makes this mincemeat suitable for vegetarians. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks.

Time 50m

Yield 24

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 large green apple, peeled and finely chopped
1 ¼ cups sultana raisins
1 ⅛ cups white sugar
½ cup dried currants
½ cup raisins
½ cup butter
½ cup chopped almonds
1 ½ tablespoons grated orange zest
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup brandy

Steps:

  • Combine cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice in a bowl. Reserve 1 heaped teaspoon for the mincemeat. Store the rest in a small jar for a later use.
  • Inspect two 12-ounce jars for cracks and rings for rust, discarding any defective ones. Immerse in simmering water until mincemeat is ready. Wash new, unused lids and rings in warm soapy water.
  • Combine apple, sultanas, sugar, currants, raisins, and butter in a saucepan. Cook over low heat and stir gently until butter has melted. Stir in chopped almonds, orange zest, 1 teaspoon of mixed spice, and cinnamon. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and set mincemeat aside to cool down for 30 minutes. Stir in brandy. Spoon into sterilized jars.

MARY BERRY'S MINCEMEAT BUNS

Mary Berry's Mincemeat Buns image

These little cakes are delicious. Moist, fruity and nicely spiced! Quick and easy to make as well!

Provided by Marie Rayner

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 ounces (170g) prepared mincemeat
3/4 cup (4 ounces) dried currants
1 large free range egg
1/3 cup + 1 TBS (75g) finely granulated sugar (castor sugar)
1/3 cup (75g) butter at room temperature
1 cup - 1 TBS (125g) self raising flour (see notes)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325*F/160*C/gas mark 3. Have ready 12 paper cases or a 12 cup muffin tin. (you don't need to put the cases in a tin, they will cook properly just as is if you place them on a baking sheet.) If using a tin, butter it well.
  • Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and beat together for 2 minutes until light, fluffy and well combined.
  • Divide equally amongst your muffin cups/paper cases.
  • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and springy to the touch. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely.
  • These are very pretty served dusted with icing sugar.

MINCEMEAT

Mincemeat image

I copied this from The Virginia Housewife by Mary Randolph many, many years ago. It is supposedly the recipe used by Martha Washington. The original recipe called for ingredients by pounds. I used the cheapest, fattiest burger I could find in place of the beef amd suet. I also use a pound of mixed candied fruit instead of the citron and peel. Supposedly this can be processed in a water bath, but I don't have that much confidence. I store the jars in the freezer.

Provided by Countrywife

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h

Yield 8 quarts

Number Of Ingredients 17

1/2 lb beef
1/2 lb suet
1/4 lb citron
3/4 lb candied peel
1 lb apple
1 lemon
1 orange
1/2 lb sugar
1/2 lb currants
1 lb raisins
1 tablespoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup brandy
1 cup dry sherry
sherry wine (optional) or rum (optional)

Steps:

  • Put meat, suet, citron, peel, peeled and cored apples, lemon and orange through the meat grinder.
  • Mix throughly with sugar, currants. rasins, spices, salt, brandy and sherry.
  • Pack into quart jars and process or freeze.
  • Every few months add a couple of tablespoons brandy, sherry or rum if the mix looks dry.

HOMEMADE MINCEMEAT

Homemade Mincemeat image

Use for Christmas mince pies but also great added to apple pie fillings. Baking it in the oven prevents it from fermenting and gives it a longer shelf life. So far I have kept it for up to 6 months. This is a Delia Smith recipe and I have been using this recipe for a good 20 years now. Also a good gift since it is better then any bought mincemeat!
