MOM'S DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BREAD

Mom's Delicious Homemade Bread image

This is my Mom's recipe. It is so good, very light and fluffy with a crispy crust on the bottom. Very simple too. Can be used to make rolls, or loaves. You can easily double it. You can also add 1c. raisins and/or slivered almonds,orange/lemon zest and vanilla extract to a loaf for a festive holiday bread. The options are endless!

Categories     Yeast Breads

Time 2h25m

Yield 2 loaves, 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup honey
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
5 -6 cups all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Combine warm water, yeast, oil and honey in a large bowl, let sit for 5 minutes then add the salt and egg. Stir all together.
  • Add the flour one cup at a time, stirring together after each cup. Around the 5th cup your dough will begin to come together pulling away from the sides of the bowl and forming a ball.
  • Empty the dough onto a clean, floured surface and begin kneading the dough adding a little more flour as it becomes sticky. It should be slightly sticky. Knead for 3-5 minutes until smooth, firm and elastic.
  • Set aside to rise until double.
  • Divide dough into 2 loaves or 1 loaf and 12 rolls or all rolls if you like. Place in well greased loaf pan or rolls on a greased cookie sheet.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F
  • Set aside to rise until almost double once more.
  • Bake loaves for 25-30 minutes, or rolls for 15 minutes. They should be golden brown on top and bottom when done.

HOMEMADE BREAD

Homemade Bread image

A recipe I have made since I was three with my mom and brother. Great for kids, because they will like to punch down the dough and can even shape it into teddy bears, like we did!

Provided by angelmeg1080

Categories     Yeast Breads

Time 1h40m

Yield 2 loaves, 20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 tablespoon active dry yeast
2 cups water, warmed
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour or 5 1/2 cups bread flour

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, mix the yeast with the warm water and stir in sugar until dissolved.
  • Add the salt and the flour, one cup at a time.
  • Knead bread for about 5-10 minutes.
  • Place bread in a large bowl sprayed with olive oil spray and turn to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and place in(inactive/not hot) oven to rise for one hour, or until dough has doubled in size. (If the kids really can't wait, 45 minutes works too!).
  • Punch down the bread and let the kids shape it, or put it into two loaf pans. I recommend brushing with an egg mixed with a tablespoon of water because it makes the bread taste better and makes it golden and crispy on the outside. Let the dough rise for another half hour (you can skimp on this to 20 minutes again if you have to!). Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and bake for 25 minutes. Serve with margarine mixed with honey (about 2-3 tablespoons, to taste) and brown sugar (ditto, but packed). To store this bread, wrap very tightly in several layers of foil, or put in a large Ziploc bag and seal. But, it's best warm and served the same day -- however putting chunks in the microwave for 10 seconds if it's a day old helps, too. (Forgive me for my run-on sentences -- I am educated!).
  • P.S. Even for a health nut like I usually am, using whole-wheat flour exclusively in this recipe gives it a bad reputation.

Time 5h45m

Yield 4 Loaves, 48 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 cup warm water
2 (1/4 ounce) packages traditional yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
4 cups warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons salt
3 tablespoons bacon drippings
9 cups flour

Steps:

  • Pour 1/2 cup warm water in tall glass, add yeast and 2 rounded tsp sugar. Let stand 10 minutes.
  • As yeast mixture is working, pour 4 cups of water in sauce pan, add 2 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp salt and 3 tbsp bacon drippings. Stir until bacon drippings are melted. Shortening can be used, but the flavour is not as good.
  • Pour 6 cups flour in large bowl, make a well in the middle, pour in saucepan mixture. Mix yeast well and pour into flour mixture. Add 3 more cups of flour and mix top to bottom until formed.
  • Pour extra flour on counter and knead dough until smooth and elastic and no longer sticky (about 10 minutes). Place in a large greased (bacon Fat)glass bowl. Cover with clean towel and let stand for 1-½ hours in a draft free place. (Inside oven with light on is ideal).
  • Remove from bowl and punch down dough on lightly floured counter. Return to bowl and cover with towel and let stand for one more hour.
  • Remove from bowl and punch down dough on lightly floured counter.
  • Cut into four equal parts and roll like a baby blanket. Place in 4-greased (bacon drippings) loaf pans and cover with towel. Let stand 21/2 hours then bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 35 to 45 minutes (Until golden brown).
  • Remove from oven and turn loaves over on countertop (Taking them out of the pans). Let cool completely before bagging the loaves. They cool faster if you turn them around every ten minutes or so.

QUICK & EASY HOMEMADE BREAD

Quick & Easy Homemade Bread image

I had used different bread recipes over the years, and finally came up with my own. I use this recipe for everything... bread, buns, pizza, cinnamon buns, you name it. It turns out every time, and tastes great. My husband loves when I make dinner rolls with these sprinkled with quick oats or poppy seeds! This is my first time posting a recipe- I really hope someone else likes this easy home-made bread recipe as much as I do!

Categories     Yeast Breads

Time 1h20m

Yield 2 Loaves

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 1/2 cups warm water
1 1/2 tablespoons instant yeast
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 egg
1/3 cup butter (or oil) or 1/3 cup margarine (or oil)
6 cups white flour (I dont measure the flour, this is just an estimate- it could be more, it could be less!)
1 cup whole wheat flour

Steps:

  • Combine water, yeast, salt, sugar, milk powder, egg, and butter in a large mixing bowl- stir with wooden spoon until well mixed.
  • Slowly add the flour while still mixing- you don't have to add whole wheat flour, but I usually add about a cup just to give it some whole wheat flavor; then the rest can be white flour- you can do half and half also, or just all white- you are the cook, mix it up.
  • Continue to add the flour to the dough (you will have to use your hands to mix it now)
  • Once the dough becomes more of a ball and not so runny, pour the dough out of the bowl onto a floured countertop; knead dough with your hands for 10-15 minutes, adding more flour if needed. Keep adding flour until the dough is JUST sticky when you hold it- but not too sticky- you don't want it stuck to your fingers. Also, if you add too much flour, your bread will become heavy- so watch how much flour you add to your mixture!
  • Shape dough into ball, place in a large bowl lightly rubbed with oil; cover with a light towel- let rise until doubled in size.
  • Separate dough in half; shape into dough roll and place in lightly oiled bread pans. Brush with a beaten egg to give it that nice golden look when it comes out of the oven or brush lightly with water and sprinkle lightly with quick oats or poppy seeds- the possibilities are endless!
  • Let loaves rise for 15-20 minutes- this is a personal choice, some people do not like big loaves of bread, while others do- so keep an eye on how big your loaves get, it is a personal choice of course.
  • Place in a 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes, or until done.(cooking time varies, depending on oven).
  • Let sit in pans for 5 minutes then take the loaves out and set on wire rack to cool.
  • Its great for toast, sandwiches, or still hot out of the oven as a snack!
