HERMITS (BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS 1969)
A distinctively different hermit recipe. No molasses, no coffee, but lots of flavor. My mother made these every year. The current BHG recipe is different.

Steps:
- Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar.
- Add eggs and beat well.
- Sift dry ingredients; add to creamed ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
- Add nuts and fruits. (If you're using a stand mixer, go slowly; this will be hard on the motor.).
- Drop by heaping teaspoons onto greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375 about 10-12 minutes.

Steps:
- Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Return pasta to hot saucepan; cover and keep warm.
- Meanwhile, in a bowl toss together chicken and flour until chicken is lightly coated. In a large skillet cook and stir chicken in 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium-high heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove chicken from pan; set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add remaining oil to skillet. Add shallot and garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute or until tender. Carefully stir in broth, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Cook, uncovered, for 2 to 3 minutes or until reduced to about 2/3 cup. Stir in chicken, capers, and parsley; heat through.
- Toss pasta with chicken mixture. If desired, serve with Parmesan cheese. Makes 4 servings.
- Lemon Shrimp Pasta Toss: Prepare as directed except substitute 12 ounces peeled, deveined shrimp for chicken. Cook and stir in skillet for 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp are opaque.

- Beat butter or margarine in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, cloves, and nutmeg; beat until combined. Beat in egg and coffee. Beat in as much of the flour a you can. Stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon. Stir in raisins and chopped pecans.
- Drop dough by rounded tablespoons 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool. Makes about 48.
