HEDGEHOG BISCUITS

Hedgehog Biscuits image

Hedgehogs are simple, unbaked biscuits that have been around for generations: an Australian classic! And a great lunchbox, snack and afternoon tea favourite! Hedgehogs can be made with or without nuts. If omitting the nuts, use 1/2 cup extra of the biscuits. As an alternative, you can use almonds or walnuts. Adapted from a recipe from the Simply Great Meals Club website. 125 gms = 4 oz.

Provided by bluemoon downunder

Categories     Dessert

Time 30m

Yield 24 Hedgehogs

Number Of Ingredients 10

125 g unsalted butter
1 cup icing sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup coconut
2 cups Marie biscuits (for Australians) or 2 cups graham crackers, broken into pieces (for Americans)
1/2 cup hazelnuts
125 g dark chocolate
125 g milk chocolate
1 tablespoon Copha

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat.
  • Remove the pan from the heat, and stir in the sifted icing sugar and cocoa, and mix well.
  • Stir in the beaten egg, and return the pan to the heat and stir until the mixture boils.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the coconut, biscuit pieces and nuts. The biscuits are generally broken into pieces about the size of a hazelnut, but some larger pieces is fine, and the pieces certainly don't have to all be the same size!
  • Spoon the mixture into a baking paper lined 18cm x 28cm (approximately 7" x 11") slice pan and press down firmly.
  • Icing the Hedgehogs: Melt the dark chocolate, milk chocolate and copha together in a microwave-safe bowl or jug in a microwave oven on a Medium setting for approximately 2 minutes; stir well, pour - and spread evenly - over the hedgehog base.
  • Chill to set.
  • Once chilled, cut into 24 slices. Or larger or smaller slices if you wish!
  • Notes: For extra flavour, add 1/4 cup of sultanas.

7 ESSENTIAL FOODS YOU NEED TO FEED A HEDGEHOG – AFRICAN ...

From africanpygmyhedgehogs.com
Estimated Reading Time 11 mins
  • Poultry-based dry cat biscuits. The ideal food for pygmy hedgehogs is dry cat biscuits with their low fat and a healthy amount of protein. Better still, the indoor cat variety of the dry cat biscuits have the right balance of fat, protein along with some fibre.
  • Insects. Pygmy hedgehogs are primarily insectivores feeding on a multitude of insects in the wild but they are also opportunistic and will feed on small frogs, lizards, fruit and vegetables.
  • Cooked chicken. When we have roast chicken at home, we cook with it without any seasoning or oils and keep a small piece aside for Hynee with the skin removed (as the skin is quite fattening).
  • Fruit. Hedgehogs can eat fruit but care needs to be taken as some fruit can be toxic to them (more about this below). We feed our pygmy hedgehog Hynee bananas, apples, pears and blueberries.
  • Vegetables. Occasionally we give our pygmy hedgehog Hynee some small pieces of broccoli which provide him with some vitamins. We used to give him small pieces of carrot on the odd occasion but from what I’d read, these are too starchy and difficult for pygmy hedgehogs to digest.
  • Wet cat food. As an occasional treat, wet cat food (canned cat food) can be given to pygmy hedgehogs as long as the wet cat food doesn’t contain too much fish* or any other meats not suitable for pygmy hedgehogs.
  • Scrambled and boiled eggs. Scrambled eggs are a good source of protein for pygmy hedgehogs and we’ve given Hynee scrambled eggs on some occasions. It’s important to make sure the egg isn’t cooked with any oils or butter or is seasoned.

9 OF THE BEST CAT FOODS FOR HEDGEHOGS (CHECKED OUT ...

From africanpygmyhedgehogs.com
Estimated Reading Time 13 mins
  • Choose a dry cat food. During our initial investigations into the best cat food for our hedgehog, we were advised by the breeder to use dry cat food (some people call this type of food kibble but I’ve always associated that word with dog food) as it makes their poop smell less.
  • Choose indoor dry cat biscuits. As these types of cat biscuits are lower in fat because they are designed for cats who are going to be sedentary and not venture out as much.
  • Choose chicken or turkey cat food. We usually tend to choose poultry-based dry cat biscuits like chicken or turkey as this type of meat is leaner and provides a good source of protein.
  • Choose cat food that’s low in fat. We are careful to ensure the dry cat biscuits new give Hynee as part of his staple diet is low fat-based. By choosing the chicken-based biscuits the fat content comes in at around 10%.
  • Choose cat food with the right amount of protein. Protein is good for hedgehogs as long as it’s kept within safe limits and the general consensus is to avoid any products with more than 40% protein.
  • Choose cat food suitable for hedgehogs. It’s important to understand the distinction between the dietary requirements for wild hedgehogs and pet hedgehogs, as the difference in diet is critical in maintaining the health of pet hedgehogs.
  • Choose cat food with no multiple recalls. Make sure the cat food hasn’t had multiple products recalls in the last 5 years, as this may indicate the manufacturing process used by the manufacturer of dry cat food biscuits isn’t good enough and needs to be changed many times.
  • Choose cat with no dangerous additions. Some manufacturers add additional ingredients to cat biscuits which are generally not a problem for cats to eat but maybe a problem for hedgehogs.
  • Choose cat food with good fiber content. Fiber is also an essential part of the hedgehog’s diet and like humans, they need this to bulk up their stools so it’s easy to pass.
