HEALTHY POPCORN TREAT

Healthy Popcorn Treat image

I wanted to make a sweet popcorn that was delicious but not loaded with sugar, so I came up with this recipe. It's one of my kids' favorites! Olive oil works if you don't have coconut oil. If you accidentally add to much salt, add a little more honey. If it's too sweet, add a little more salt. Start with a little cinnamon and gradually add more until it is the flavor you desire.

Categories     Desserts     Candy Recipes     Popcorn Candy Recipes

Time 20m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 tablespoons coconut oil
¾ cup popcorn kernels
2 tablespoons honey, or more to taste
salt to taste
1 pinch ground cinnamon, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Heat coconut oil in a large pot over high heat. Drop 3 popcorn kernels into the hot oil and place a lid on the pot; cook until 1 kernel has popped. Remove the lid and pour in the remaining popcorn. Return the lid to the pot and cook popcorn, shaking pot back and forth over burner, until there are 1 to 2 seconds between pops, about 5 minutes.
  • Quickly transfer popcorn to a large bowl; evenly drizzle honey over popcorn. Add salt and cinnamon; toss popcorn with your hands to coat evenly.

9 BEST TIPS FOR HEALTHIER POPCORN – CLEVELAND CLINIC

From health.clevelandclinic.org
Estimated Reading Time 4 mins
  • Make popcorn on the stovetop. Air popped popcorn uses no oil, meaning it has the fewest calories. “Popping it in oil, however, is a great way to consume a healthy portion of fat to control hunger,” Jeffers says.
  • Use walnut, avocado or extra virgin olive oils. Walnut, avocado or extra virgin olive oils are best when making popcorn on the stovetop. Canola oil is the next best option.
  • Manage portion sizes. A serving size depends on the type of popcorn you are eating, but for reference, one cup of plain popcorn is about 30 calories. Be cautious because once you start adding toppings, the calorie count goes up pretty quickly.
  • Avoid microwave popcorn. In general, microwave popcorn is the least healthy option. It often contains a lot of salt, the flavorings are artificial and people tend to eat too much because of the large portion size of most bags.
  • Avoid butter — or use it sparingly. Buttered popcorn is a fan favorite but unfortunately comes with hidden chemicals and calories. If you feel like you must have it, use 2 to 3 teaspoons and gradually cut it out altogether.
  • Limit kettle corn. Kettle corn is usually mixed with refined sugar, salt and oil and is a slightly less nutritious option because it increases calories and salt intake.
  • Beware of added sweeteners and chemicals. Avoid purchasing popcorn that is anything more than your basic popped kernel because with each thing added, the food becomes less healthy.
  • Add healthier, lighter toppings. Spice up your popcorn in a healthy way by adding hot sauce or melt a couple of ounces of cheese on your popcorn. You also can try a sprinkle of balsamic vinegar or eat your popcorn with pickles or jalapeño peppers.
  • Add protein. One way to keep popcorn servings under control and make you feel fuller longer is to pair it with a protein. Try eating it with a tablespoon of peanut butter, 2 ounces of cheese (as long as you didn’t top the popcorn with cheese already) or another protein source you like.

  • Hummus and Whole Grain Crackers or Veggies. We knew there was a reason we loved chickpeas. “They're packed with protein—three grams for every two tablespoons,” says Dr. Daryl Gioffre, a New York City-based nutritionist and author of Get Off Your Acid.
  • Oatmeal. You probably associate oatmeal with the early morning hours, but it has plenty of nighttime benefits, too. For starters, oats are a complex carb that break down slowly, controlling blood sugar spikes that might mess with your sleep.
  • Popcorn. You’re trying to quell a craving, not put yourself in a full-on food coma. That’s where popcorn comes into play. The addictively crisp, salty snack is naturally light (a whopping three-cup serving clocks in at about 100 calories), so you can nosh without getting weighed down before bed.
  • Low-Fat Greek Yogurt and Fruit. We already know that Greek yogurt is a great source of protein, but we had no idea that it could help us catch some ZZZs, too.
  • A Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. Who knew our childhood favorite was actually a prime midnight snack? Here’s why: According to the National Sleep Foundation, peanut butter is a natural source of tryptophan (aka an amino acid that induces sleepiness).
  • Pumpkin Seeds. What’s salty, crunchy and a surefire way to put you to sleep? Pumpkin seeds, of course. According to the American Sleep Association, these guys are a good source of the sleep-inducing mineral magnesium and amino acid tryptophan.
  • Bananas and Peanut Butter. Remember how your high school track coach told you to eat bananas to prevent or soothe leg cramps? That’s because bananas contain potassium, which aids in muscle relaxation.
  • A Handful of Nuts. If you’re lazy like us, you don’t want to do more cooking and dishes just for a snack. A small handful of nuts fits the no-cook bill, thanks to their high protein content and healthy fats.
  • Almond Butter. Speaking of nuts, almond butter is an equally convenient grab-and-go (er, snooze) option. And considering that a quarter cup of almonds contains 24 percent of your daily recommended magnesium intake, plus tryptophan and potassium, they’re a no-brainer for late night hunger pangs.
  • A Turkey Sandwich. You’ll never forget when your Uncle Bill fell asleep right in the middle of the Thanksgiving feast. It was probably thanks to the turkey, which is known for being rich in serotonin-producing tryptophan, and that’s exactly what makes it a smart choice for a midnight snack.
