HAWAII FIVE-O COCKTAIL
This tropical drink is from Safeway's website, posted by LSheridan. It's really delicious, with a wonderful Hawaiian flair to it. I garnished our drinks with skewer that had a pineapple chunk and a red cherry on it, but I think a wedge of lime or orange segment would be a great garnish, too.

Steps:
- Drain pineapple in a fine-mesh colander. Reserve 1 cup of the syrup and refrigerate until use.
- Place pineapple, heavy whipping cream, and 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a blender or food processor; blend until smooth, about 20 seconds. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for 2 hours.
- Place cubed luncheon meat in a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook for 10 minutes. Flip with a spatula every 2 minutes so all sides brown nicely. Add reserved pineapple syrup and 2 tablespoons brown sugar to the skillet; continue cooking until thick and bubbly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- While the meat caramel is cooling, pour cold pineapple mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions, about 20 minutes. Add dragon fruit in the last 5 minutes of churning.
- Pour the ice cream into an airtight, freezer-safe bowl. Fold in the meat caramel. Freeze until firm, about 4 hours.

- Saimin. Anyone who has traveled to Hawaii knows that the state has an ongoing love affair with noodles. Saimin was developed during the plantation era, when Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese workers would often share and mix their culture’s signature noodle dishes with their coworkers.
- Malasada. Deep-fried, dusted in sugar, and often filled with sweet flavored custard, malasadas are the Portuguese version of a donut. These tasty treats were originally reserved for the plantation workers who came over from Portugal in the 1800s until Leonard Rego opened Leonard’s Bakery on Oahu in 1953 and made them available to the masses.
- Poi. This unique condiment is made from the most important plant in Hawaiian culture. No, it’s not pineapple, but a starchy root vegetable called taro (or kalo in the Hawaiian language).
- Kalua Pork. You haven’t had pork until you’ve had it slow-cooked and roasted in an underground imu oven. If you do go to a luau, chances are it will include an imu ceremony and traditional unveiling of the whole pig that has been cooking underground wrapped in banana leaves all day.
- Poke. While this popular dish was traditionally made by local fishermen who seasoned the end pieces of their daily catch with salt and seaweed, poke has since turned into one of Hawaii’s most iconic foods.
- Lau Lau. Packed with pork or fish (sometimes both), wrapped in taro leaf and steamed slowly, unfolding a freshly cooked Lau Lau is one of life’s small pleasures.
- Spam Musubi. Made of sushi rice topped with seasoned spam and wrapped in nori seaweed, musubi is the perfect grab-and-go snack for fueling a Hawaiian adventure.
- Haupia. A coconut-based dessert with a jello-meets-pudding consistency, haupia is another staple on your Hawaiian plate or luau dinner. Try it in pie form (you won’t be disappointed) combined with chocolate and whipped cream at Ted’s Bakery on the north shore of Oahu.
- Huli Huili Chicken. Whole birds based in sweet sauce and rotated slowly over a hot barbeque (huli is the Hawaiian word for “turn”), you’ll often find local schools and fundraisers using this method of cooking to cook for large numbers.
- Portuguese Sausage. It's hard to find a Hawaiian beach barbecue that doesn't include a link or two of Portuguese sausage on the grill, and once you have your first bite of the salty, spicy goodness, you’ll see why.

- Honolulu is laden with crime. The show’s ongoing plot is built on fighting crime in Honolulu County, which is the island of Oahu. So, crime is naturally emphasized each week, but Honolulu is the nation’s third safest city per a recent Forbes report.
- You can use your cell phone while driving. As McGarrett and Danno drive around Oahu, they sometimes pull out their cell phone for personal calls.
- Five-0 Headquarters Located in Historic Buildings. When the detectives gather at headquarters, a scene of a very attractive historic building shows on the screen with a caption that it’s their headquarters.
- Kukui High School Fighting Nuts! Let’s go Nuts! In a recent episode, we learned that McGarrett played football at Kukui High School. That’s a fictitious high school.
- The North Shore is just few minutes away from Waikiki. Sometimes, you’ll see the guys driving from the North Shore down to Waikiki or Ala Moana beaches within minutes.
- You can openly drink wine on the beach in Hawaii. In a recent episode, we saw McGarrett and his lady-friend enjoying a sunset barbeque and bottle of red wine on the beach.
- Sunrises are sunsets. In the scene mentioned in myth 6, we are led to believe it’s a romantic sunset beach barbeque, but that scene was actually filmed on the eastern shore of Oahu.
- Hawaii Five-Oh. I learned that I’ve been mistakenly typing Hawaii Five-O, with the letter O. CBS would like to refer to the show as Hawaii Five-0 with a zero.
