ORANGE HABANERO BARBECUE SAUCE



Orange Habanero Barbecue Sauce image

Made with blood orange juice, regular orange juice and caramelized onions, this is one spicy and flavorful barbecue sauce to add to all of your smoked or grilled meats!

Number Of Ingredients 12

¼ cup oil
1 onion (thinly sliced)
2 Scotch Bonnet peppers (finely chopped (or Habanero))
3 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
2 cups citrus juice (from 3 blood oranges and 2 navel oranges)
½ cup rum
2 cups brown sugar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
½ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
¾ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, combine oil and onion.
  • Cook on low heat for about 10-15 minutes until onions are golden and caramelized.
  • Add peppers and garlic.
  • Stir fry for 1 minute until the garlic starts to change color.
  • Pour out excess oil if you still have a lot of residual oil.
  • Add rum, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, soy sauce, paprika and salt.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 10-15 minutes, until thickened.
  • Don't overcook it as remember it will thicken more as it chills.
  • Chill.

1-2 tsp Habanero Powder
1 Tbsp Onion Powder
2 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Allspice
1 tsp Thyme
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Black Pepper
1/8 tsp Nutmeg
1/8 tsp Salt

Steps:

  • If you're like us, you need to get your dried habs grinding like a college kid on the dance floor at 1am. Use a mortar and pestle or spice mill and grind to a fine powder.
  • Gather your ingredients and combine them all in a small (or large if you like wasting space) bowl.
  • Mix it together with a spoon, fork, whisk, potato peeler, it really doesn't matter.
  • Slap it on some meats and feast on the fire.

1 ts Cumin, powder
1 ts Coriander, ground
1 ts Salt
1 ts Onion powder
1 ts Garlic powder
1/2 ts Mustard, dry, coleman's
1/2 ts Black Pepper, fresh ground
1/2 ts Thyme, leaves, dried
1/2 ts Curry powder
1/2 ts Allspice, ground

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients. Rub on meat and refrigerate the night before smoking. Comment: Consider halving the chile for a milder rub.
