HOW TO TRELLIS TOMATOES IN 7 EASY STEPS - ALL ABOUT GARDENING
From allaboutgardening.com
- Choose a Variety You Love. Choosing the right variety is all about identifying how you like to eat them. You can grow beefsteak varieties for slicing (perhaps with fresh mozzarella and basil!)
- Decide on Determinate or Indeterminate Plants. Quite a few vegetables have both bushing and vining varieties. Tomatoes are no different. But in the case of tomatoes, they are referred to instead as determinate and indeterminate.
- Choose the Right Support System. Now that you know whether the tomato plants you chose are determinate or indeterminate, you can choose the proper way to trellis them.
- Pick a Correctly Sized Support. If you choose a cage or trellis system that isn’t tall enough, your plant will spill over the top. This can cause vines to snap under their own weight or break due to wind damage.
- Install Your Trellis at Planting. Unless you are using a trellis system like the Florida Weave, you’ll want to install your cages, stakes, or trellises at the time of planting.
- Tie Vines Loosely. Unlike a lot of vining plants like cucumbers and peas, tomatoes do not send out tendrils. Instead, you will have to tie vines to your supports manually.
- Know When and How to Prune. Even though you’re containing your plant inside a cage or tying it to a larger trellis system, you can’t forget to prune it effectively.

- Stake fence support. This long lasting trellis system is simple and inexpensive to make. I first learned about it while reading Raised Row Gardening by Jim and Mary Competti who run Old World Garden Farms.
- String trellising. Perhaps the simplest way to vertically support a vine is to tie it to a frame or other support using pieces of string or twine. String trellising is an inexpensive and readily available system that requires few materials.
- Stake and string combination. Another option for trellising tomatoes is the stake-and-string method. Similar to the vertical hanging trellis above, this method involves pounding a wooden stake next to each plant when your tomatoes first go into the garden.
- Hanging fence or netting. If you are a gardener who prefers to let your indeterminate tomatoes develop more than one “leader” or head, a single strand or stake will not provide enough lateral support for your developing plants.
- Concrete mesh. After experimenting with different trellises for our indeterminate tomato crop, we have now adopted this relatively inexpensive system for all our vining tomatoes.
- Wire tomato cages. These commercially available cylindrical galvanized wire tomato cages spike directly into the soil and are otherwise freestanding to a height of about 4’.
