Grilled Cheese with Apple and Havarti image

A grown-up grilled cheese with crisp apple slices, arugula, and walnuts.

Balsamic Roasted Cranberries
Stone Ground Mustard
Apricot Preserves
Honey
4 slices Whole Grain Bread
4 teaspoons Salted Butter, softened
3 slices Havarti Cheese
1/4 cup Walnuts, chopped
1 cup Baby Arugula
1/2 Granny Smith Apple, seeded and thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Adjust toaster oven cooking rack to the lowest position. Place an ungreased baking sheet inside the toaster oven and preheat to 450°F on the "Bake" setting.
  • Butter two bread slices and place buttered-side-down on a cutting board. Top each with a slice of cheese and layer with the walnuts, arugula, and apple slices. Tear the last slice of cheese into pieces and distribute evenly across both sandwiches. Spread remaining bread with your condiment of choice, place on top and butter outsides.
  • Using oven mitts, carefully remove the preheated pan. Place sandwiches on the pan and return to the toaster oven.
  • Cook sandwiches for about 4 to 5 minutes. Carefully remove the pan, flip sandwiches with a spatula and return to the toaster oven. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted about 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Cool slightly, then devour.

2 slices thick-cut bacon
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/2 yellow onion, sliced thin
3 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
2 thick slices hearty multi-grain bread
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
3 ounces grated white Cheddar
1/2 Granny Smith apple, sliced
1 tablespoon whole-grain Dijon mustard

Steps:

  • In an 8-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp, about 5 minutes. Tear in half and set aside.
  • Into the same skillet, add the brown sugar, onions and 1 tablespoon of the butter. Cook, stirring as needed, until the onions are golden, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  • Build the grilled cheese by spreading one piece of bread with the mayonnaise. Sprinkle half of the grated cheese on top, followed by the onions. Place the apple slices and bacon on top of the onions, then add the rest of the cheese. Spread the other slice of bread with the mustard and put it mustard-side down on top of the cheese. Spread the outside of the top bread slice with 1 tablespoon butter.
  • Transfer the sandwich to the skillet over medium-low heat, butter-side down. Spread the top of the sandwich with the remaining tablespoon butter. Toast each side of the sandwich until golden on the outside and the cheese is melted, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Cut in half and serve.

6 slices sharp Cheddar, about 3 ounces
Half apple, cored and thinly sliced
2 tablespoon unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Put 2 slices of bread on a cutting board or work surface. Top each with two slices of cheese, the apple slices, a third slice of cheese and another piece of bread. Press down lightly.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sandwiches and cook until the bread toasts and the cheese is slightly melted, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip with a spatula and add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan. Cook until the other side is toasted and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes more, adjusting the heat as needed to keep the bread from burning before the cheese melts.?

The night before, assemble your ingredients and grill the sandwich for about five minutes, then put it in a sandwich bag, and place in the fridge. By noon the next day: luncheon excellence.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 piece ciabatta sandwich bread, about 4 1/2 inches long
2 large slices havarti cheese, sliced thin
3 large slices prosciutto
1/2 Fuji apple, cored and sliced into half-moons 1/8 inch thick
1 1/2 teaspoons butter

Steps:

  • Split ciabatta, and place one slice of cheese on one half. Top with prosciutto, followed by apple slices, the second slice of cheese and the other half of the bread.
  • Melt butter in a 9-inch skillet over medium-high heat. When it froths vigorously, transfer sandwich to skillet. Place a grill press or a cast iron skillet on top of sandwich, and apply gentle pressure for about 2 1/2 minutes. With a spatula, carefully flip sandwich, replace grill press, apply pressure and grill 2 minutes more. Let cool. Place in sandwich bag, and store in refrigerator.
