CLASSIC CRISPY RICE TREATS

Classic Crispy Rice Treats image

Gooey marshmallows and crispy rice cereal come together in this recipe for the all-original favorite. We added a splash of vanilla extract and pinch of salt to give these sweet treats a palatable punch. Cut into squares, store between a few pieces of wax paper (to prevent any sticking) and enjoy for up to three days.

Time 45m

Yield Makes 24 cereal treats

Number Of Ingredients 7

Nonstick cooking spray
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
One 10-ounce bag mini marshmallows
6 cups crispy rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch kosher salt
Decorative toppings, optional (see Cook's Note)

Steps:

  • Line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang on each of the longer sides. Spray the foil lightly with cooking spray.
  • Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and cook, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.
  • Working quickly, add the rice cereal to the pot and stir with a rubber spatula until evenly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and press into an even, compact layer. (Spray your hands with a little cooking spray to keep them from sticking when pressing the cereal mixture into the pan). Decorate with toppings if using (see Cook's Note).
  • Let sit at room temperature until firm, about 30 minutes. Cut into 24 squares. Store the cereal treats at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

HALLOWEEN CRISPY RICE TREATS

Halloween Crispy Rice Treats image

These colorful treats will be a hit at your Halloween party and they're so easy to put together. The spooky spider web decoration is made with melted marshmallows. Using gloves and working on foil to stretch the web makes cleanup a easy.

Time 1h30m

Yield 9 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

Nonstick cooking spray
Two 12-ounce bags marshmallows
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons
Green gel food coloring
Purple gel food coloring
9 cups crispy rice cereal
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Halved chocolate-covered peanuts or black or orange jellybeans, for decorating

Steps:

  • Line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with foil to overhang by an inch or two. Spray with cooking spray.
  • Remove half the marshmallows from one bag and set aside. Divide the remaining 1 1/2 bags of marshmallows evenly between 2 large microwave-safe bowls. Divide the butter between the two bowls.
  • Microwave one bowl until the marshmallows begin to melt, about 45 seconds. Stir well and microwave again until completely melted, about 30 seconds more. Add green gel food coloring and stir to turn the marshmallow mixture an even, vibrant green (see Cook's Note). Add half the rice cereal (4 1/2 cups), stirring well to coat the cereal completely and evenly. Repeat the melting process with the second bowl of marshmallows and butter, tint with purple gel food coloring and mix in the remaining 4 1/2 cups rice cereal.
  • Grease your hands with cooking spray (or use disposable gloves). Using one hand for each color, dollop blobs of the cereal mixture in the prepared pan, randomly distributing it to make several mottled layers. Once you have used all of the cereal, press the mixture into the pan to even it out and smooth the top. Let cool and set completely, at least 1 hour.
  • Use the foil overhang to lift the treats from the pan. Peel back the edges, flattening the foil to create a work surface for decorating. Trim the treat edges with a serrated knife to neaten if desired and cut into 9 rectangles. Separate the treats on the foil so there is a little space between each.
  • Put the remaining half bag of marshmallows in a large microwave-safe large bowl. Microwave until the marshmallows begin to melt, about 45 seconds. Stir and microwave again until completely melted, about 30 seconds more. Stir until smooth. Set aside until the marshmallows are just cool enough to touch.
  • Wearing disposable gloves, pull out a handful of the marshmallows and rub between your hands until you can pull long web-like strings when you separate them. Pull the strings and let them drape over the treats, scooping up more marshmallows as needed. Pull from different directions over the treats to create a web-like pattern.
  • Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler or in the microwave at 50-percent power in 30-second intervals, stirring well with a rubber spatula between each, until completely melted and smooth. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a small, plain tip. Pipe 8 spider legs together on a treat and place a chocolate-covered peanut or jellybean, cut side down, on top of the legs to create a spider body. Make a spider on each treat.

Use liquid or gel food coloring to make vibrantly colored or lightly-colored green rice krispie treats.

Provided by Beth Klosterboer

Categories     Dessert

Number Of Ingredients 4

7 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies Cereal
6 tablespoons European-style salted butter, (cut into small pieces)
16 ounces Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
green liquid or gel food coloring

Steps:

  • Grease a 9 inch by 13-inch pan with butter or spray with baking spray if making green rice crispy treat squares.
  • Grease a large mixing bowl with butter or baking spray and pour in the cereal, then set aside.
  • Stove Top Instructions
  • Begin melting the butter in a medium-large saucepan set over low heat then stir in the marshmallows.
  • Continue to melt over low heat, stirring often, until about 75% of the marshmallows have melted.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and stir vigorously until all of the marshmallows have melted.
  • Then, add 1/4 teaspoon (or up to 1 teaspoon) of liquid green food coloring or several drops of gel food coloring and stir until well blended.
  • Add more coloring until you get the desired shade of green. Use 1 full teaspoon of liquid coloring for a vibrant green cereal treat.
  • Pour the melted marshmallows over the Rice Krispies Cereal and toss to evenly coat.
  • Spread the mixture into the buttered pan and gently press into an even layer if you want squares or allow the mixture to cool for about 5 minutes before shaping into wreaths, Christmas trees, or other green treats.
  • Let the pan of green cereal treats cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting into 18 rectangles.
  • Microwave Instructions
  • Combine the butter and marshmallows in a large microwave-safe mixing bowl.
  • Heat in the microwave for 1 minute then remove and stir vigorously until melted.
  • If needed, heat for additional 15-second increments stirring after each until melted.
  • Follow the steps above to color the marshmallow cereal treat mixture.

RICE KRISPIES TREATS

Rice Krispies Treats image

Make and share this Rice Krispies Treats recipe from Food.com.

Provided by tmw_2008

Categories     Dessert

Time 30m

Yield 12 2 inch peices, 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1/4 cup margarine or 1/4 cup butter
4 cups miniature marshmallows or 4 cups about 40 regular marshmallows
5 cups kellogg's Rice Krispies

Steps:

  • Place a small lump of margarine into a paper towel and use to grease a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan, then wipe the pan off with a dry paper towel. This will keep the bars from sticking to the pan when they are placed on it.
  • Measure margarine into saucepan; melt over low heat. Add marshmallows and cook, stirring constantly, until marshmallows are melted and mixture is very syrupy. Remove from heat.
  • Add Rice Krispies cereal; stir until well-coated.
  • Spread warm mixture in the greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Using waxed paper or buttered spatula press firmly into an even layer. (I normally use a butter knife to do this; dipping the knife into a glass of water occasionally will keep the Rice Krispies from sticking to it as you shove them into the pan)
  • Cut into squares when cool. (This is normally about 10 minutes after placing the mixture into the pan.)
  • *Flavored marshmallows (usually the ones that are green, orange, etc.) may be used to change the taste of your Treats just enough that it will be noticeable.
  • **For Christmas, consider using the red and green colored Rice Krispies that normally are sold around Christmas time, to give your bars that festive holiday appearance. :-).
