THE DIRTY MARTINI

The Dirty Martini image

There's nothing like the salty, dry taste of a well-made dirty martini. Learn how to perfect this gin cocktail recipe and make your own olive brine.

Provided by Colleen Graham

Categories     Beverage     Cocktail

Time 3m

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 1/2 ounces gin (or vodka)
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
1/4 to 1/2 ounce olive juice, to taste (or olive brine)
Garnish: 1 or 3 olives

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour the gin, dry vermouth, and olive juice.
  • Stir well for at least 30 seconds.
  • Strain into a chilled cocktail glass .
  • Garnish with 1 or 3 olives. Serve and enjoy. Many people prefer to use the brine that is in a jar of olives for dirty martinis. And why not? If you have olives, you have salty juice right there. It is a very convenient and cheap addition to the drink. Plus, with all the gourmet olives available-stuffed with everything from the standard pimento to blue cheese or jalapeño-each brine brings a slightly different taste to the martini. There are also many olive juices available that are designed specifically for the dirty martini. They can vary quite a bit in taste, though they're interesting to explore. It may take some time to discover which bottled olive juice you like best, so keep trying. Dirty Sue is a favorite for many dirty martini devotees. You might also try the cocktail-worthy olive juices from Boscoli, Fee Brothers, Filthy, Fragata, or Stirrings.
  • Place the olives in a glass jar with a tight-sealing lid. Recycled olive jars are a natural choice, and Mason jars work great as well.
  • Gently press the olives with the back of a wooden spoon firmly enough to release their juice. Try not to smash them as if you're muddling fruit for a cocktail.
  • In a bowl, combine the other ingredients and mix well.
  • Pour the liquid over the olives until they are completely covered. Leave a little room for air at the top of the jar.
  • Seal the jar and shake it vigorously.
  • Refrigerate for at least one day (longer is better) and shake before using the juice. If your juice gets a little low for the olives left in the jar, add more vermouth and give the mix a good shake.

HEALTHY GREEN JUICE

Healthy Green Juice image

Great healthy drink for detoxing after the holidays or whenever you have overdone it. Worth it to buy the organic celery, even if you buy conventional for everything else. Adjust fruit and veggie amounts to suit your personal taste. More apple equals a sweeter drink. Store any extra in a glass jar in the fridge for up to a day. Shake before drinking.

GREEN APPLE MARTINI

Green Apple Martini image

Green apples and lemon juice give this martini a jolt of flavor.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Drink Recipes     Cocktail Recipes

Yield Makes two 6-ounce martinis

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 cup sugar
1 medium green apple (about 8 ounces), peeled (peels reserved)
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
4 ounces best-quality vodka

Steps:

  • Bring sugar, 1 cup water, and 3/4 of the apple peel to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. (Reserve the remaining apple peel for garnish.) Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved, about 5 minutes. Transfer syrup to a medium bowl set over an ice bath; let stand, stirring occasionally, until cool. Pour through a fine sieve into another bowl; discard solids.
  • Cut apple into chunks; press through an electric juicer into a small bowl. Pour through a fine sieve into another bowl; discard any solids, and set juice aside
  • Cut remaining peel into thin, 4-inch-long strips. Tie each strip into a knot; set aside in a bowl of water with lemon juice.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, 2 ounces syrup, and 1/3 cup apple juice; shake. Divide between 2 martini glasses; garnish with apple knots.

  • Green Demon Drink. This refreshing cocktail is like summer in a glass. Made with Midori, vodka, rum, and lemon, it’s a gloriously boozy lemonade that’s perfect for warm afternoons and lazy days in the sun.
  • Wicked Witch Cocktail. Sometimes it’s good to be bad, and this tempting cocktail is definitely sinful. Great for grown-up Halloween parties, it’s a spooky sip made with Midori, vodka, and blue Curacao.
  • Luck of the Irish. Irish or not, you’ll definitely feel lucky after a glass of this boozy treat. Made with Jameson whiskey, it’s a true taste of the Emerald Isle, tempered with peach schnapps, pineapple juice, and lime soda.
  • Blue Hawaii Cocktail. Right up there with the classic cocktails, the Blue Hawaii was created in the 1950s by a Hawaiian bartender. It remains popular to this day thanks to its sweet and fruity taste and gorgeous turquoise color.
  • The Grinch Cocktail. Go from Grinch to great with this fun and festive tipple. You can whisk this holiday treat up in minutes. Simply stir together Midori, rum, and lemon-lime soda.
  • Fuzzy Leprechaun. This bright green drink tastes like peach and goes down very easily. Funky and fruity, it’s flavored with peach schnapps, blue Curacao, vodka, pineapple juice, and orange.
  • Toxic Spawn Martini. Okay, so the name’s not exactly appetizing, but this Halloween treat is a lot tastier than it sounds. The ‘spawn’ is chia seeds, soaked in Kinky Green liqueur and vodka.
  • Kinky Green Cocktail. Another Kinky Green liqueur cocktail, this recipe is deliciously different. It’s tart and tangy, with a sour apple taste that’ll wake up your tastebuds.
  • Green Screwdriver. Screwdrivers are a classic-yet-simple cocktail made by combining orange juice and vodka. There’s a lot of debate over the origins of this popular highball.
  • Hammered Hulk. A few of these and Hulk would go from homicidal to happy in no time flat. If you’re feeling Hulk-like, this cocktail is the perfect pick-me-up.

10 HEALTHY GREEN JUICE RECIPES THAT ACTUALLY TASTE GREAT

From prevention.com
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • Healthy Green Juice with Lemon. “Any leafy greens are going to give you those vitamins and nutrients,” Sugiuchi says. This recipe makes sure of that, because it’s packed with both kale and romaine.
  • Green Juice for Beginners. Kale a little too intense for you? Sugiuchi also loves spinach, which contains many of the same nutrients but is “a little milder,” she notes.
  • Tomato-Kale Gazpacho Smoothie. Technically a smoothie, this plant-powered blend has a lighter consistency if you want something a little more filling than your typical juice.
  • My Favorite Green Juice. In this leafy greens-packed recipe, powerful nutrients taste delicious. Kale is chock-full of vitamins A, C, K, and B6, plus calcium and manganese.
  • Green Cleanse Smoothie. You’ll use a blender instead of a juicer for this recipe, but the result is much closer to the consistency of a juice than a thicker smoothie.
  • Digestive Aid Green Juice. We all feel bloated every once in a while. This vegan juice is the perfect antidote, packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger and fennel.
  • Zingy Ginger Green Juice. For another ginger-forward recipe that’s great for digestion, try this five-ingredient juice that goes all-in on the root. You’ll drink an entire head of fresh kale—along with its vitamins, minerals, and those Sugiuchi-approved phytonutrients—without even realizing it.
  • Springtime Green Apple Juice. We all need a break from leafy greens every once in a while. That’s where this celery-apple juice comes in—it’s sweet, light, and incredibly refreshing.
  • Cilantro-Celery Juice Punch. This recipe is only for the cilantro lovers of the world—it gets most of its color from an entire bunch of the greens. The love-it-or-hate-it herb is rich in antioxidants, making it a great juice base.
  • Four-Ingredient Fall Juice. Kale, spinach, and romaine aren’t the only greens you can use for your juice. Why not try Swiss chard? This easy juice (which works any time of year) balances out the bitterness of chard and celery with the natural sweetness of apples and oranges.
