Grandma's Wassail image

An easy recipe for the traditional holiday drink. If you don't have a tea ball, place spice mixture on a small piece of cheesecloth and tie with a string, forming a small pouch.

2 gallons apple cider
2 cups fresh orange juice
1 cup lemon juice
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick, broken into pieces

Steps:

  • Mix apple cider, orange juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and sugar together in a large pot over medium-low heat.
  • Place cloves and cinnamon in a tea ball; add ball to the apple cider mixture. Simmer mixture until warmed through, about 15 minutes. Serve from pot with large ladle.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 qt apple cider
5 cups water
6 oz frozen orange juice concentrate
1 tsp whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
½ tsp ground ginger
1 cup sugar

Steps:

  • In a large dutch oven or pot, add all the ingredients.
  • Bring to a boil, and then simmer on low for 20 minutes. Use a chinese skimmer to strain out some of the cloves and cinnamon or use a strainer to pour into another container for serving. Serve hot.

This is a delicious alternative to the traditional Apple and Cranberry Wassail that I usually serve during the Christmas holiday season. I make mine in the crock-pot, and let it simmer all day. Add a cup of golden rum, if desired.

2 1/2 cups apricot nectar
4 cups unsweetened pineapple juice
2 cups unsweetened apple cider or 2 cups apple juice
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 fresh lemon, sliced
1 whole orange, halved
10 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 dash aromatic bitters (Angostura bitters)
1 cup golden rum (optional)

Steps:

  • Stud the orange with cloves.
  • Place all ingredients into a large saucepan or a crock-pot, and heat until very hot.
  • Ladle into mugs and serve hot.
