Steps:
- Cream butter and gradually add sugar. Blend in egg, cream, vanilla extract, orange rind, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add flour and mix until combined and a dough forms.
- Wrap up the dough in some plastic wrap and chill dough in refrigerator for 3 hours. Roll out dough 1/3 at a time. Cut out with cookie cutters. You can bake and decorate with icing after cooling or you can just add sprinkles and bake.
- Put cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 5-7 minutes. Makes 20-24 cookies.
- Place powdered sugar, meringue powder and water in a large bowl. With an electric mixer, mix on low for 6 minutes. Icing is ready to use but it will be very thick. Divide the icing into two bowls. You will need a thinner consistency to frost the cookies and a medium consistency to do the decorations. Add a few tablespoons of water to one bowl and stir. You want it thin like a thick gravy. In the next bowl, add a few teaspoons of water and stir. You want the medium consistency to be like toothpaste. Color it if you wish.

CHRISTMAS CUTOUT SUGAR COOKIES
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a bowl, stir together flour and baking powder. In another bowl, beat butter with sugar until fluffy and light. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, a third at a time to make a stiff dough. Divide dough into 4 pieces. Roll out a portion of cookie dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters. Place on lightly greased or nonstick cookie sheets. Bake until lightly golden, about 10 minute, rotating baking sheet halfway through cooking time. Cool completely on pans about 5 minutes, transfer to cooling racks and cool completely before decorating.
- In a small bowl, mix sugar and water to form a thick, smooth icing. Stir in food coloring to reach desired shade. Drop icing onto cookies using a small teaspoon and smooth with the back of the spoon. Make additional bowls for additional colors.
- Additional multi-colored sprinkles can be added on top of icing before it dries for more decorative cookies, if desired.
GRANDMA'S CHRISTMAS SPICE CUTOUTS
My great-grandmother made these, and the tradition was passed down in the family-without a written recipe! My mother would always start them the day after Thanksgiving, which was exciting for us kids, as we knew Christmas wasn't far off. They are easy to decorate with family; my grandchildren always look forward to them.-Elaine Phelps, Cornell, Wisconsin

GRANDMA'S CUT-OUT SUGAR COOKIES
Steps:
- In a mixer on high, cream the butter, sugar, and eggs together.
- Turn mixer to low and add baking soda, cream of tartar, salt, vanilla, and milk until well combined.
- Slowly add in the flour a little at a time until well combined.
- Chill dough 1 to 2 hours.
- Preheat the oven to 350°.
- Sprinkle the counter with a light dusting of flour.
- Roll out a handful of dough until it is an eighth- to a quarter-inch thick. The thinner the dough, the crispier the cookies will be. If you like them to be chewy on the inside, roll the dough thicker.
- Cut out cookies in desired shapes. Use a spatula to help get them off the counter. The dough is easier to work with when it's cool, so if it gets really sticky, put it back in the fridge.
- Bake cookies for about 9-12 minutes or until cookies are lightly brown.
- When cooled, decorate the cookies with butter cream frosting and sprinkles.
- In a mixer on high, beat the butter until it's fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Beat in the powdered sugar, a little at a time.
- Add the almond extract.
- Add the half n' half a little at a time while still beating the frosting on high. Do this until desired fluffiness is achieved. It should look smooth and creamy with small peaks.
- Add food coloring of your choice.

Steps:
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and light; this should take about 5 minutes with an electric mixer, or 10 minutes by hand. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix well.
- Sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture alternately to the butter and sugar mixture with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Cover the dough tightly with plastic wrap and foil and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight. (If the dough is chilled overnight, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before rolling out so that task is easier.)
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough using a floured rolling pin to about 1/4" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters.
- Or you can roll the dough into 1" balls, place on cookie sheets and flatten with the bottom of a water glass dipped in sugar.
- Bake the cookies on ungreased cookie sheets for 7 to 10 minutes until they are very lightly golden brown around the edges. Let the cookies cool on the cookie sheets for about a minute, then remove to wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
