- Allow the stove to cool down from any previous use. The burners must be cool to avoid accidental burns.
- Pull the stove away from the wall, if it is attached to an oven. Remove the stove's electrical cord from the wall outlet. Do not attempt any repairs with the cord plugged into power.
- Open the oven door, if equipped. Detach the screws holding the glass top to the oven, or countertop surface, with a screwdriver. These two screws are typically at each front corner of the glass-top surface.
- Lift the glass top slightly up and toward you. Keep a good grip on the sides so you do not damage the glass from an accidental drop.
- Find the two wire harnesses just below the glass top in the open space you just created by moving the surface forward. Detach the two harnesses so the glass top separates from the control panel's wiring.
- Lift the glass top off of the oven or countertop. Lay it upside down on a table covered with a large, clean rag so that you can access the back area where the elements are housed.
- Locate the four corner screws holding the protective back cover to the stove. Remove these four screws with a screwdriver.
- Lift the back cover up and turn it over. Place it back onto the stove's rear area so you can see all the exposed elements. Wear protective gloves since the back cover can have sharp edges.
- Pull the four wires off that attach to the failed element with a pair of pliers. Each wire has a different color; mentally note the attachment points of each color so that you can reattach them in the same orientation.
- Release the tension on the element's mounting clips by slightly pulling them with a pair of pliers so that the element pops up out of the stove. Depending on the manufacturer, there is a minimum of two clips that need to be released.

- Detach the cooktop's power plug from the wall outlet. If your cooktop is part of an entire range, you may need to slide the appliance out from the wall to reach the wall plug.
- Allow the cooktop to sit without servicing it until the smooth top is cool. You can burn your hands if you try to service the cooktop immediately after use.
- Locate the screws holding the glass surface to its base on the front of the cooktop. If your cooktop is attached to an oven, you will need to open the oven door to reach the screws.
- Remove both screws with a screwdriver. The fastener type depends on the manufacturer's design; consult the cooktop's manual for specific screw types.
- Slightly lift and pull the glass surface toward you as you stand in front of the appliance. Only move the glass outward a few inches so that you can reach the hidden wiring between the cooktop and the rear display.
- Detach the wiring harnesses that connect the cooktop to the rear display. Each cooktop model may have a different arrangement of wiring harnesses in the rear, such as two separate harness groupings.
- Lift the glass cooktop away from the main assembly. Place the cooktop upside down on a table covered with a large, clean rag or towel to protect the glass.
- Detach the four screws securing the cooktop's burner cover on the back of the glass surface with a screwdriver.
- Lift the cover and turn it upside down on top of the glass surface. Wear protective gloves during this process; the metal cover has sharp edges that can easily cut you.
- Locate the burner that is damaged on the cover. Glass cooktops use a burner element, rather than a standard stove coil, to heat food.
