1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup peeled and chopped yellow onion
4 cups thinly sliced cabbage
1 teaspoon caraway seed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
1/2 cup sour cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet.
  • Add the onions and sauté until transparent.
  • Add the cabbage and sauté 5 minutes or until tender, but still crisp.
  • Stir in the caraway seeds, salt and pepper.
  • Meanwhile, cook the noodles in salted water as directed on the package. Drain well.
  • Stir the noodles into the cabbage and add the sour cream. Cook 5 minutes longer, stirring frequently.

This recipe is from "The Frugal Gourmet on Our Immigrant Ancestors" cookbook. It's a great Polish comfort food, easy to mix and serve, and it's easy on the pocketbook. I like to add sliced Kielbasa to mix when done and serve with a tossed salad and good hard-crust bread.

1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup yellow onion, peeled and chopped
4 cups cabbage, chopped
1 teaspoon caraway seed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper (ground)
1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
1/2 cup sour cream (optional)

Steps:

  • Melt butter in large skillet.
  • Add onion and sauté until transparent.
  • Add cabbage and sauté 5 minutes, or till tender but still crisp.
  • Stir in caraway seeds, salt and pepper.
  • Cook noodles in salted water as directed on package.
  • Don't overcook.
  • Drain well.
  • Stir noodles into cabbage and add sour cream.
  • Cook 5 minutes longer, stirring frequently.

1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup cider vinegar

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients, except the salt, in a 10- to 12-quart stainless-steel pot.
  • Bring to a boil, stir, cover, and simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Add salt to taste.

1/2 lb bacon, diced
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup onion, sliced
3 garlic cloves, chopped
8 cups cabbage, sliced
1 lb bow tie pasta, cooked
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • In a large deep skillet frie the bacon and onions with the butter and garlic.
  • Add the cabbage, and continue to saute covered until the cabbage is cooked through. You may need to add some water to the skillet to help the cabbage cook through without browning too much.
  • Add the cooked bow tie pasta and season with salt and pepper. Continue to cook until warmed through.

1 lb wide egg noodles (cooked)

Steps:

  • Cook Egg Noodles in a salted pot of water.
  • When Noodles are done drain and set aside.
  • In skillet sauté Onions in Butter until transparent.
  • Add Cabbage and sauté around 5 minutes (or until tender).
  • Mix the cooked Noodles into the skillet.
  • Add Salt and Pepper and (optional) Sour Cream.
  • Serve and enjoy.
