Time 16m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 27

6 deli rolls or small baguettes, halved
One 24-ounce jar marinara sauce
1 jar prepared pesto, optional
Five 8-ounce packages fresh mozzarella, sliced
5 ounces Canadian bacon slices, halved
8 ounces canned pineapple chunks
5 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
One 12-ounce jar Kalamata olives, chopped
8 ounces crumbled feta
4 ripe tomatoes, diced rough
1/2 English cucumber, seeded and diced
1/2 bunch fresh parsley, chopped
1 cup sliced pepperoni
6 to 7 jalapenos, sliced
Sliced Roma tomatoes, for topping
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 bunch fresh basil
Olive oil, for sauteing
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 ounces grated Cheddar
1 pound browned ground beef
Chopped romaine lettuce, for topping
Diced tomatoes, for topping

Steps:

  • For the pizza base: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Lay the rolls cut-side up on a large baking sheet. Top each half with marinara sauce (or pesto for the tomato basil pizzas), followed by the mozzarella. Then add your toppings of choice. See below for directions for assembling specific pizzas.
  • Once the pizzas are assembled, put the baking sheet on the lowest rack for 8 to 10 minutes. Then turn up the heat to 425 degrees F and put the sheet on the highest rack until the cheese starts to bubble a bit and turns golden. Remove and serve immediately! Cut the pizzas in half right across the middle so there are mini French bread pizzas for everyone.
  • Pizza Varieties:
  • For the Canadian bacon and pineapple pizzas: Top with the Canadian bacon slices and pineapple and bake according to the directions above.
  • For the Greek salad pizzas: Leave off the sauce and brush the sliced rolls with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with the mozzarella and bake according to the directions above.
  • While the pizzas are baking, toss together the olives, feta, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, the remaining 3 tablespoons olive oil and salt and pepper to taste in a medium bowl. Top the cooked pizzas with the chopped Greek salad.
  • For the pepperoni and jalapeno pizzas: Top with the pepperoni and jalapeno slices and bake according to the directions above.
  • For the tomato basil pizzas: Use pesto instead of the marinara sauce, and top with the tomato slices. Drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake according to the directions above. Top the cooked pizzas with basil leaves.
  • For the hamburger pizzas: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, red pepper flakes and salt and pepper and saute until the beef is no longer pink. Top the rolls with the sauteed ground beef and bake according to the directions above.
  • For the hamburger taco pizzas: Top with the Cheddar and ground beef and bake according to the directions above. Top the cooked pizzas with the chopped lettuce and tomatoes.

FRENCH BREAD PIZZA

French Bread Pizza image

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories main-dish

Time 50m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 ounces mild Italian sausage, casings removed
1/2 medium red onion, halved and sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 cup jarred pizza sauce
3 cloves garlic, grated
2 sprigs thyme, leaves only
1 long loaf French bread or baguette (about 22 inches long), halved crosswise and cut horizontally
2 cups shredded mozzarella
1/2 green bell pepper, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick strips
1/2 red bell pepper, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick strips
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
Crushed red pepper flakes and granulated garlic, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F with one rack positioned at the bottom of the oven and another at the top.
  • Cook the sausage in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up any clumps with a wooden spoon, until some of the fat has rendered and the sausage is brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened, about 2 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, add the pizza sauce, garlic and thyme to a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat to let the flavors infuse while the sausage and onions cook.
  • Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment and arrange the bread on top, cut-side up. Spread the tops evenly with the pizza sauce, then sprinkle with the mozzarella. Divide the sausage mixture among the bread pieces, then top off with the green and red bell peppers and Parmesan.
  • Bake on the bottom rack of the oven until the bread is crisp and the cheese is melted, about 10 minutes. Increase the oven temperature to 450 degrees F and move the baking sheet to the top rack. Continue to bake until the cheese is bubbling and the peppers are browned in spots, about 7 minutes.
  • Serve immediately with crushed red pepper flakes and granulated garlic on the side.

PISSALADIèRE (FRENCH PIZZA)

Pissaladière (French Pizza) image

Pissaladière is the ultimate in French street food; crispy crust, caramelized onions, anchovies and salty, oil-cured olives. Because it is wonderful served both warm and at room temperature, it makes perfect picnic fare. La bonne vie is sitting on a blanket with a slice of Pissaladière and a glass of chilled, crisp white wine.

Provided by Rebecca Lindamood

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 pound pizza dough
3 pounds onions (peeled, halved and cut into thin half-moon shapes then roughly chopped)
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme or 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme
3 garlic cloves (peeled and sliced)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
black pepper to taste
8-10 oil packed flat anchovy fillets (patted dry, or more to taste. See notes.)
16 Niçoise olives
1 roasted red bell pepper (stem and seeds removed, thinly sliced into strips)

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven and a pizza stone to 500°F (or up to 550°F if your oven can go higher.)
  • While the oven preheats, gently heat the olive oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet. Add the onions, thyme, bay leaf, garlic, salt and pepper, stirring to evenly coat with oil, and cook gently over medium low to low heat (lowering if necessary to prevent over-browning) for about 20 minutes, until the onions are softened and just lightly browning around the edges. Do not caramelize the onions completely or they will scorch in the oven giving a burned taste to the final product. Remove the bay leaf from the caramelized onions.
  • Dust your work surface with flour and gently stretch your pizza dough into a circle. Use a floured rolling pin to stretch the dough out until it is about 1/8-inch thick. Generously cover a pizza peel with semolina or cornmeal.
  • Spread the onion mixture (including the oil) to within 1/4-inch of the edges of the crust. Arrange the anchovies and olive halves over the top of the onions. If you're using the red bell pepper strips, arrange those artfully among the anchovies. Give the peel a gentle shake to be sure the dough isn't sticking. If it is, carefully lift that area and sprinkle more semolina or cornmeal underneath to fix it.
  • Slide the dressed dough onto the hot stone and bake for between 8 and 15 minutes, depending on the heat of your oven, or until it is evenly browned and crisp underneath. Use the peel to transfer the Pissaladière to a cutting board.
  • Cool for five minutes, cut into wedges and serve warm or at room temperature.

PIZZA CRUST ( FRENCH-STYLE)

Pizza Crust ( French-Style) image

This homemade recipe is well worth the effort. Add some sauce, cheese and topping and it is "Homemade Pizza Night" at your house! (Prep time does not include time for the dough to rise)

Provided by Aroostook

Categories Low Cholesterol

Time 35m

Yield 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 (1/4 ounce) packages dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm water
1 tablespoon sugar
9 cups flour
1 tablespoon salt
cornmeal (optional)
olive oil

Steps:

  • Add sugar to water. Dissolve yeast in water.
  • Add 4 cups flour and salt.
  • Beat well with wooden spoon.
  • Add the rest of the flour one cup at a time.
  • When dough starts to pull away from the side of the bowl, turn out on floured board and knead until smooth.
  • Place dough in a bowl that has been oiled w/ olive oil.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk.
  • Cut into two portions and let rest for 15 minutes.
  • Pat or roll out in pans.
  • I use 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 jelly roll pans.
  • Sprinkle edges of crust with cornmeal if you like.
  • Spread with your favorite sauce, cheeses and topping.
  • Most pizza is cooked on high heat 500°F+ for 15-20 minutes until cheese in the middle is bubbly and the bottom of the crust is browned.
  • A hint-- Pizza cooks from the outside in so don't overload the middle of the pizza too much-- and have the cheese, sauce and toppings go right to the edge.

THE INCREDIBLE FRENCH TOAST PIZZA BAKE

The Incredible French Toast Pizza Bake image

I had french toast the first time when I was 10 years old and my aunt from America came over to Malta for a holiday. She Cooked the french toast for her children and me and served it with ketchup. This has nothing to do with her version of french toast which was the regular kind, but rather a quick meal in itself that can be prepared well ahead of time and baked at the last minute. This dish looks like pizza but without the effort. I always have toast bread in the house and this is perfect to use up the bread especially when it isnt so fresh anymore. feel free to change the toppings according to what you have at home, such as ham and cheese, olives, salami and cheese etc. Please do try this recipe and tell me what you think.

Provided by Wild Thyme Flour

Categories Lunch/Snacks

Time 50m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

8 slices toast bread
4 eggs
1 cup milk (approx)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tomatoes, sliced
4 slices cheese
1 pepper, sliced
1 onion, sliced
oregano

Steps:

  • Line a rectangular dish with baking paper.
  • Saute the onions and peppers, until soft.
  • Trim the crust from the bread and cover the bottom of the pan neatly with the bread slices. You might need to cut some so that no space remains.
  • Mix the milk and eggs with the salt and pour over the bread slices, covering as much as possible. You might need to make up some more of the egg mixture depending in how thick the bread is or how many extra slices you have put in.( 1/4 cup milk per egg).
  • arrange the sliced tomatoes on top, then the sauted peppers and onions. Cut each cheese slice into 4 strips and arrange on top.
  • Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with oregano.
  • Preheat oven to 300F/ 150C, in the meantime the egg mixture will get absorbed into the bread.
  • bake for about 30-40 minutes or until the bread feels like french toast and the cheese is melted.
  • Brown the top lightly under a grill to toast slightly. serve warm or cold cut into squares.
  • I use cold leftovers for my kids school lunch the next day.

FRENCH-STYLE LASAGNA

I learned how to make lasagna this way when I worked in France. What makes it French-style is the use of a bechamel (white sauce) instead of ricotta, and Swiss (traditionally Emmental) cheese. Full of great flavor! I always get compliments.

  • Pizza Napoletana. 50 Kalò, Naples. Naples shared its love of pizza and dry pasta with the world but something got lost in translation. Rather than eat pasta al dente and pizza soft, the Neapolitan way, foreigners learned to do the opposite.
  • Pizza al Taglio. Pizzarium. Roman-style pizza al taglio (“by the cut”) is baked in sheet pans and sold by the slice, hence the alternative names pizza in teglia (“pizza in the pan”) and pizza al trancio (“pizza by the slice”).
  • Pizza Siciliana. In the USA, “Sicilian” is sometimes synonymous with “square,” the shape of the pan pizzas prepared by Sicilian immigrants and their descendants in Boston, Providence, New York and Detroit.
  • Pizza Gourmet. Gourmet Pizza. “Gourmet” is a broad label for a new ethos lifting pizza to the standards of haute cuisine. The two gentlemen of Verona– Simone Padoan of I Tigli and Renato Bosco of Saporè–construct their pizzas bit-by-bit as a Michelin-starred chef would a dish.
  • Pizza Romana Tonda. In 1492, Christopher Columbus convinced all that the world was round, not flat. Devotees of pizza romana tonda view the world as round AND flat.
  • Pizza Fritta. Gino Sorbillo Pizza Frittata. If it’s taken some time for pizza fritta to captivate Italians outside of Naples, that may because deep-frying a food as starchy and cheesy as pizza might seem imprudent.
  • Pizza Alla Pala/Pizza A Metro. These are alternate terms for oblong pizzas baked directly on the stone floor of the pizza oven. Think pizza boards. The pizza a metro is sized according the number of people sharing it, up to a meter long, as its name – “pizza by the meter” – suggests.
  • Calzone. The practice of folding the pizza dough over itself dates back at least 150 years: In Usi e costumi di Napoli – “The Traditions and Customs of Naples,” calzone is listed as one of the main styles of pizza.
  • Pizza Italiana. This is the none-of-the-above style. It may also be recognized as “classica”, “tradizionale” or, in the generic sense, “napoletana”. It’s pizza according to the Italian model, as opposed to the American one: Small size (about 12-inches).

THE 7 TYPES OF ITALIAN PIZZA YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Pizza Napoletana. There’s a good chance that this is the pizza most people consider true Italian pizza. Napoletana pizza comes from Naples and has a strict set of production rules: Only wheat flour, yeast, salt, and water can be used for the dough, which is flattened to around three millimeters thick.
  • Pizza al taglio. A classic style of pizza found in Rome, pizza al taglio means “by the cut. The name references the fact that the rectangular sheet pan pizza is sliced into squares and sold by the weight of the piece.
  • Pizza Romana. Another pizza style common in Rome, this round pizza has a crust that’s rolled as thin as the center of the pie. Pizza Romana is cooked in an electric oven, making the dough extremely crispy to the point of breaking, not bending, when you try to fold it.
  • Pizza alla pala. This pizza is named after the wooden paddle that’s used both for getting it out of the oven and for serving. Pizza alla pala is another style found around Rome.
  • Sfincione, or pizza Siciliana. Sfincione is to pizza Napoletana what New York-style pizza is to Chicago’s deep dish. Pizza Siciliana comes from Sicily, as the name implies.
  • Pizza al padellino, or al tegamino. This pan pizza (padellino means pan) is baked and served in a small pan similar to deep dish pizza in the US. It’s most associated with Turin, though it can be found throughout Italy.
  • Pizza all’Andrea. An old, traditional style of pizza that’s closer to focaccia loaded with toppings, rather than the tomato sauce covered pizzas we’re familiar with today.

The French prefer traditional Italian-style pizzas, on a thin crust, and it is not common to find deep-pan pizzas.
