FIRST BABY FOOD: PEAS

First Baby Food: Peas image

Great for busy moms and dads to make a bunch on a Sunday and freeze for the weeks ahead. This can be used with other first foods for your baby! Apples or pears are fun or even green beans. Make sure it is mild enough for your baby's developing digestive system. Brussels sprouts or broccoli probably aren't the best first foods. You can also use fresh peas instead of frozen if you have them.

3 cups frozen peas
½ cup breast milk

Steps:

  • Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add peas, cover, and steam until tender, about 15 minutes.
  • Place peas and breast milk in a blender or food processor and puree until creamy. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps.
  • Spread pea mixture into an ice cube tray, cover with plastic wrap and freeze until solid, 2 to 3 hours. Transfer frozen cubes to a resealable plastic bag and store in the freezer.
  • To serve, heat cubes in the microwave for about 30 seconds until warm but not hot. Stir thoroughly.

Once your peas have been thoroughly washed, and before you can turn your peas into puree for baby, you need to cook them. I recommend steaming peas to preserve nutrients. Steam peas for approximately 8-10 minutes. Next add peas to a blender to puree them. I usually fill mine about 1/3 full at a time and blend in batches to help speed the process up. You may also need to add a little water at this time. If you want to add back in some of the nutrients that were lost during steaming you can use the water that you used to steam the peas. Just be sure that you use a good quality filtered or RO water when you steam them. Start with a few tablespoons of water as you can always add more. If the peas get too thick it will not blend well. So keep stopping and scraping down the sides of the blender as needed and adding water until all the peas are smooth and well blended. You want it to be somewhat thick and not runny, so don't add too much water. You basically only want to add as much water as is needed to help the blender out. Otherwise the peas will just stick to the sides and won't fall down to the blades. Once all the peas are blended to a super smooth consistency you have baby food! Yep, it's that easy!

  • Get both your peas and green beans going in separate pots on the stove. I use frozen (easy to have on hand), but you can substitute fresh. Steam each vegetable (or cook in a small amount of boiling water) until tender. About 4-5 minutes for frozen peas, 7-9 minutes for frozen green beans.
  • While the veggies are going on the stove, take turns with your microwave to make the frozen butternut squash and the oatmeal.
  • For the frozen butternut or winter squash, transfer the contents to a bowl, cover and microwave for about 5 minutes. Remove carefully (it will be hot) and let it cool before your refrigerate it.
  • For the oatmeal, I use regular old-fashioned or rolled oats and microwave them with some water for about 2 1/2 minutes. (See my post on 3-minute breakfast oatmeal for more detailed instructions and tips.) Puree with additional water (or use breastmilk or formula) and keep an eye on it. Oatmeal soaks up liquid as it sits so it’s likely to get hard again, either before it cools or after it’s been refrigerated. You may need to add additional water/breastmilk/formula to it before serving to ensure it’s spoonable.

  • Pea purée. Share on Pinterest. Peas are a small yet mighty source of nutrition, packing vitamins A and C, iron, protein, and calcium. If the skin of the peas makes the texture less appealing for your child, make sure to strain them to make it as smooth as possible.
  • Banana purée. Often called a “perfect” food, bananas are rich in potassium and fiber. Bananas are also known as one of nature’s own antacids and are very gentle on the stomach.
  • Baby brown rice cereal. Rice cereal is one of the most common foods to introduce because it’s less allergenic and easily digested. Mixing it to a fairly thin texture can help babies make the transition from an all-liquid diet to a more solid one.
  • Avocado purée. Share on Pinterest. This buttery treat is a wonderful “good fats” food for baby’s brain and physical development. Plus, the creamy texture of perfectly ripe avocado is one that babies seem to love.
  • Baked sweet potato purée. In-the-know adults eat sweet potatoes for their health benefits. Sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, so it makes sense that your baby can benefit from this delicious tuber, too.
  • First carrots purée. Carrots are a wonderful introduction to solids because of their naturally sweet taste and pleasant texture. This simple preparation of carrots provides a rich supply of the antioxidant beta carotene and vitamin A.
  • Pumpkin thyme purée. Share on Pinterest. This easy and elegant seasonal recipe is full of beta carotene, potassium, and iron. Make a big batch and freeze it in ice cube trays for single-portion servings for later!
  • First spinach with white yams. This simple combination of spinach and yams adds a healthy dose of calcium, iron, vitamin A, and folate to your baby’s diet.
  • Beets and blueberry mash. Not only is this blend a beautiful shade of magenta, it’s also a nutritious combination of antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber.
  • Avocado and banana baby food. This is a pairing of two wonderful foods: avocados (good fats and fiber) and bananas (potassium and vitamin C). The banana also adds a bit of sweetness and lightens up the usually dense avocado purée.

  • Select & Buy Peas. You can make pea puree with fresh or frozen peas. Buy fresh in the spring and look for pods that are intact and have a bright green color.
  • Wash the Peas. If you decide to use frozen peas, skip this step and move to the next. If you choose to use fresh peas, remove from pod, place in a colander, and rinse with cold water.
  • Cook the Peas. Place the peas in a steamer and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until tender. Drain peas and rinse with cold water for three minutes to stop the cooking process.
  • Puree or Mash the Peas. Puree peas in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add water as needed to reach desired consistency. For chunkier pea puree, which is ideal for babies 10 months or older, mash the peas with a potato masher instead of pureeing them.
  • Serve Pea Puree. Pea puree is delicious with sweeter veggies, yogurt, and rice. Try mixing pea puree with: Sweet potatoes. Carrots. Russet potatoes. Mint.
  • Refrigerate or Freeze Leftover Pea Puree. Cool pea puree and refrigerate leftovers in BPA-free containers for up to 3 days. Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.

  • For Puree: Simply peel and pit a quarter of a ripe avocado and place on a cutting board. Then with the back of a fork, mash the avocado until smooth. You can add in a teaspoon or two of formula or breast milk to make it super smooth and creamy.
  • For Puree: Using a hardboiled egg, peel away the shell and white part of the egg. Then place the cooked egg yolk on a cutting board or baby-safe plate. Using the back of a fork, mash the egg yolk until smooth, adding in a teaspoon or two of breast milk or formula if needed to make it creamy.
  • For Puree: Peel and chop 1-2 sweet potatoes. Place in a steamer basket over boiling water and steam for 10-12 minutes or until tender when pricked with a fork. Add cooked sweet potatoes to a food processor or blender, and puree for 1-2 minutes until completely smooth, adding in water in 1/4 cup increments if needed. • Carrot Puree. With a sweet taste and smooth consistency, pureed carrots are typically one of the most well-accepted first baby foods from 4–6 months of age.
  • Yam or Sweet Potato Puree. Sweet potatoes and yams are not the same, but when it comes to starting solids, they may as well be! Both are good sources of vitamin A, B6, C and E. These nutrients contribute to healthy eyesight and immune system function.
  • Acorn or Butternut Squash Puree. Butternut squash and acorn squash are packed with folate, calcium and vitamin A, an antioxidant that aids with vision and fights free radicals.
  • Green Pea Puree. In terms of green veggies, peas are one of the best first baby purees to start with, as they provide interesting texture and taste but aren’t bitter.
  • Green Bean Puree. Another hit with babies, green beans are a good source of vitamin K, vitamin C and manganese, which play an important role in a healthy immune system, eyesight, blood clotting and bone development.
  • Avocado Puree. Avocados are rich in a variety of nutrients including fiber, vitamin K, folate and vitamin B6. This creamy green fruit is also packed with heart-healthy fats, which are helpful to your baby’s brain and nervous system development.
  • Apple Puree. Apples’ sweet flavor makes them another well-accepted option for first baby foods from 4–6 months of age. Along with dietary fiber for digestive health, apples serve up vitamin C, which is known to help fight free radicals.
  • Pear Puree. Like apples, pears also contain dietary fiber and antioxidant vitamin C, helping to support a healthy immune system for your growing baby.
  • Plantain or Banana Puree. The mild flavor of bananas and plantains is appealing to most babies, and the texture is easy to manipulate. Both of these fruits offer a variety of nutrients, including fiber for healthy digestion, potassium for blood function and antioxidant vitamin C.
  • Peach Puree. Boasting plenty of vitamins C and A, peaches are delightfully sweet and another one of the best first baby foods. Their bright yellow-orange color is complemented by powerful antioxidants along with a healthy serving of fiber to aid in your baby’s digestion.
