Steps:
- Position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F using the convection setting, if available. Place a baking sheet on one of the racks to preheat.
- Prepare the chips: Cut the potatoes into 1/4-inch-thick sticks. Toss with the olive oil and cayenne in a bowl. Carefully remove the hot baking sheet from the oven, add the potatoes and spread in an even layer. Use a rubber spatula to scrape any oil from the bowl over the potatoes. Bake on the top oven rack, turning once, until browned and crisp, 25 to 30 minutes. Season with salt.
- Meanwhile, make the fish: Set a wire rack on a baking sheet and coat with cooking spray. Lightly crush the cereal in a bowl with your fingers. Add 2 teaspoons salt, and black pepper to taste. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites and a pinch of salt until frothy.
- Dip the fish in the egg whites, then roll in the cereal crumbs to coat. Place the fish pieces on the rack (position them on their sides so that the majority of the crust is exposed) and mist with cooking spray.
- Bake the fish on the bottom oven rack until crisp and just cooked through, about 12 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper. Serve the fish and chips with tartar sauce and/or malt vinegar, if desired.

THE BEST FAST FOOD FISH SANDWICHES, RANKED

- Culver’s North Atlantic Cod Fillet Sandwich. Photo: Culver’s. After publishing the Popeyes Cajun Flounder review a few weeks back, I heard from several commenters who insisted that Culver’s positively owned the fast fish sandwich market.
- Captain D’s Giant Fish Sandwich. This one may be a bit tricky to find because Captain D’s exists solely in the south and certain parts of the Midwest.
- Popeyes Cajun Flounder Sandwich. Advertisement. You can read my full review of this sandwich here. If you’d rather not, I’ll sum it up for you: tasty sandwich.
- Arby’s King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe Sandwich. You’ll see two Arby’s contenders on this list: the King’s Hawaiian Deluxe, which is new, and the chain’s standard Crispy Fish Sandwich.
- Culver’s Northwoods Walleye Sandwich. Advertisement. After we published the original Fast Fish Power Ranking on March 3, we heard from Associate Editor Aimee Levitt’s mother about a glaring omission: the Culver’s Northwoods Walleye Sandwich.
- Dairy Queen Wild Alaskan Fish Sandwich. I’m always pleasantly surprised when I swing by a DQ for something other than a blizzard. It’s never top of mind, but every time I visit I’m reminded that the Queen has a serious knack for fries and dishes out some of the best chicken tenders on the fast food market.
- White Castle Panko Breaded Fish Slider. Photo: White Castle. I’ve got a soft spot for White Castle, because the sliders remind me of school lunch hamburgers.
- Long John Silver’s Classic Battered Alaskan Pollock Sandwich. Photo: Long Jonn Silver’s. Advertisement. Picture this: you’re an extraterrestrial and you’ve just landed on Earth.
- McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. Speaking of fish sticks: Takeout editor-in-chief Marnie Shure posited that Filet-O-Fish devotees love the sandwich because it reminds them of fish sticks.
- Arby’s Crispy Fish Sandwich. Like I mentioned above, Arby’s recently upgraded its fish sandwich offerings. The Crispy Fish Sandwich has been around for a while and, like the Hawaiian Deluxe, serves up a very generous slab of fish.

- Popeyes Seafood Po'boy. Popeyes continues to change the game with its under-appreciated po' boy lineup, featuring your choice of hand-breaded chicken strips, fish fillets, or battered shrimp, dredged in the chain's signature blend of herbs and spices and crispy-fried to perfection.
- McDonald's Filet-O-Fish. After almost 60 years, could the sandwich that started it all, the one that summarily trounced Ray Kroc's visions of pineapple sandwiches way back in 1962, still hold its ground in a sea of similar fast food fried fish sandwiches?
- White Castle Fish Slider. Look, no one is as surprised to see this as high in the ranking as we are. After all, what could a chain made famous by steamed onion burger bites possibly know about the fried fish sandwich game?
- Arby's Crispy Fish Sandwich. The Crispy Fish Sandwich from Arby's isn't always available at every location all year long, but when this limited time offering returns, it's worth snapping up.
- Culver's North Atlantic Cod Sandwich. Culver's has quite the eclectic menu; there aren't a lot of places that carry things like a pork sandwich and a pot roast sandwich.
- Captain D's Giant Fish Sandwich. If you have a Captain D's in your area, you know the score. For those who aren't as lucky, think of it as a Long John Silver's with a southern flare — it might not be the exact same, but it's not too far off.
- Long John Silver's Classic Fish Sandwich. Hang on! Before you jump in your vehicle of choice and head down to the local Long John Silver's to try a sandwich, you better make sure they actually have a sandwich on the menu.
- Burger King Big Fish. Evaluating fast food fish sandwiches can be tricky business, mostly because there are so many variables in preparation that can make even a potentially great fish sandwich wildly unpalatable.
- Hardee's/Carl's Jr. Redhook Beer Battered Fish Sandwich. If Hardee's/Carl Jr. (which is the same place, basically) were a state, they'd be Texas. Everything they carry is just big, and they're proud of it.
- Chick-fil-A Fish Sandwich. Naturally, during the Lenten season, quick serve restaurants will promote their fish products even more. Probably the last place you'd expect to see one is Chick-fil-A, but even they jump in with an offering available for 40 days at select locations.

- Honey Walnut Shrimp, Panda Express. Cue the Thanos snap. Seriously, watching the rest of the fast food seafood game compare to Panda's signature shrimp is like watching the Avengers trying to KO Marvel's Mad Titan at the end of Infinity War.
- Giant Fish Sandwich, Captain D's. In the duel of the fast food seafood specialists, Captain D's is the people's choice. Folks regard it as better because of its taste, and this Giant Fish Sandwich shows it off best.
- 2 Cod, 6 Shrimp Platter, Long John Silver's. Those looking to treat themselves to a seafood feast need to track this down. Being one of two fast food seafood specialists in the country, Long John Silver's knows how to give cod the appropriate TLC, keeping it crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside.
- Jumbo Shrimp Tacos, Del Taco. Del Taco's take on the Baja-style seafood taco is surprisingly solid. The shrimp are coated with just the right amount of seasoning, and the crisp lettuce and tomato offset it perfectly in terms of contrasting textures.
- North Pacific Cod Sandwich, Wendy's. Who does the generic fish sandwich the best? That answer, as said by several others in the past, has to be Wendy's.
- Shrimp Po' Boy, Popeyes. Popeyes knows how to do fried shrimp proper. They're coated with the same seasoning as Popeyes' top-notch fried chicken, elevating the crustaceans to a new level of flavor.
- Cajun Fish Sandwich, Arby's. Arby's would be a lot higher on this list, to be honest, if they had decided to bring back the Nashville Hot Fish Sandwich from the LTO grave.
- Fish Slider, White Castle. The phrase "simple is better" definitely applies to White Castle's Contribution to the fast food fish game. They don't church theirs up with tartar sauce or lettuce, using just a slice of American cheese to top their Alaskan pollock.
- North Atlantic Cod Sandwich, Culver's. To make it on this list as a standard fish sandwich, you need to get some basics right: a crispy exterior, intriguing fillings, and a well-cooked piece of fish.
- Tuna Pie, Jollibee. The fried chicken icon of the Philippines is no one-trick pony, as its entire menu is straight fire. When it comes to seafood, it's a little harder to find at the Bee, but this Lenten LTO is the best they have to offer.
