1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 slices thick - high quality white bread
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 thinly sliced cheddar
1 large egg
chives
crumbled bacon

Steps:

  • Place a tablespoon of butter in a small skillet over medium heat.
  • Place both slices of bread on a cutting board and spread mayonnaise on top of each slice. Place 1 slice of bread, mayonnaise side down, in skillet, layer with cheese. Top with second slice of bread, mayonnaise side up. Cook until lightly golden, about 2 minutes. Turn sandwich and cook for 3-4 minutes or until browned to preference-one side will be cooked more than the other at this point. Remove sandwich from the pan and transfer to a cutting board; using a heart cookie cutter, stamp out a heart at the center of the sandwich.
  • Return sandwich to pan, placing the least cooked side down into the pan; crack egg into the hole. Place a bowl over sandwich and cook until egg whites are cooked through, about 4 minutes (check for doneness at 3 minutes).
  • Remove sandwich from pan and garnish with bacon and chives. Serve immediately.

Egg in a Hole Grilled Cheese a simple breakfast recipe of perfectly prepared sunny side up eggs in a grilled cheese sandwich.

2 slices bread
1 large eggs (per sandwich)
½ cup grated (or sliced cheddar cheese)
2 tablespoons butter
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Get all of your ingredients, utensils, pan (plus lid), and plate out before you start.
  • Crack the egg into a small bowl. Turn the stove on to medium-low. If it's too hot it will burn the butter or cook the toast before the egg is cooked. Be patient with this process.
  • Butter one side of each slice of bread. Cut a hole out of one slice of bread. Keep the hole and toast it too.
  • Place each slice of bread buttered side down in the skillet. You want to hear a 'light' sizzle. While the bread is browning, butter the top side of the bread. Allow it to toast until lightly brown. If you can remember to watch the clock for how long it takes to brown, it'll help when you cook the other side and the egg.
  • Remove the slice of bread with the hole in it momentarily.
  • Turn the slice of bread that's still in the pan (as well as the hole) and quickly put cheese on it.
  • Return the slice of bread with the hole to the pan, press it down so that the egg doesn't seep under it and slide the egg out of the bowl and into the hole. Keep holding the bread for a couple of seconds for the egg to set.
  • Place the lid on the pan and allow it to cook until the bread is toasted and the egg is cooked to your likely. This is the tricky part. This is where it's helpful if you watched the clock for the first side cooking. You may have to lift the lid to check it for doneness and that's okay.
  • Remove your sandwich from the pan and season with salt and pepper.

Steps:

  • Cut a 2 1/2-inch hole from the center of one slice of the bread. Melt butter in a medium nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. When it foams, place the cut slice of bread and the round in skillet and toast lightly, about 1 minute.
  • Crack the egg into the hole and season with salt and pepper, and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes.
  • Flip the egg bread, sprinkle half of the cheese on bread and top with ham. Spread mustard on second piece of bread and close sandwich. Cook until well browned and bottom part of cheese begins to melt, about 1 minute more. Flip whole sandwich and cook until all cheese is melted, about 2 to 3 minutes more. Serve.

Steps:

  • With a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, press a hole in the center of the slice of bread.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and melt in the butter. When the butter is all spread out, place the slice of bread in the skillet and crack the egg straight into the center of the hole.
  • Cook until the egg sets a bit on the bottom, 30 to 45 seconds. Sprinkle the egg with salt and pepper. After about a minute, flip it over with a spatula and salt and pepper the other side.
  • Move the toast around in the skillet, soaking up all of the glorious butter. Let it cook until the yolk feels soft. Here's the key: golden brown toast, white (not browned/burned) whites, soft unbroken yolk. Perfect.

1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 large eggs

Steps:

  • Whisk half-and-half, 1 egg, sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a bowl until batter is smooth.
  • Place 2 bread slices on a work surface and top each with 1 slice American cheese, 1 slice Cheddar cheese, and crumbled bacon. Top each with a second piece of bread, making a sandwich. Cut a 2-inch hole in the center of each sandwich using a biscuit cutter or 2-inch wide glass.
  • Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-low heat, tilting the skillet to cover entire surface with butter. Dip both sandwich rings and cut-out holes in the batter until evenly coated.
