- Suspiros. Suspiros are a light, sweet dessert that melts in your mouth. The name “suspiros” basically means a sigh or a breath, which is fitting because they are so light and disappear quickly.
- Espumillas. Espumillas is another Ecuador meringue dessert that’s sold as street food all over the country. The first time you see it you may confuse it for ice cream, but you’ll soon realize it’s not because people are walking around with it piled high on trays in the hot weather.
- Torta de las tres leches. This is a very popular cake sold in restaurants and grocery stores around the country. It is usually a frosted white cake which is very moist and sitting in a base of sweet milk.
- Dulce de higos. This is a very traditional dessert of preserved figs cooked in a sauce of cane sugar and spices. Dulce de higos means sweetness of figs.
- Dulce de leche (or Manjar) This is a very versatile dessert and is served in restaurants and homes all over the country. You can eat this thick pudding-like dessert on its own, or use it as a topping on a wide variety of things, like ice cream, cookies, cakes, toast…
- Quesadillas. In Ecuador, quesadillas are a sweet/savory pastry shaped like a pentagon. This is a baked dessert popular all over the country, but especially in Quito.
- Orejas. You’ll find orejas in bakeries (panaderia/pasteleria) all over the country. These are a mildly sweet pastry often covered in icing sugar or dipped in chocolate.
- Morocho. If you’re in the mood for warm, sweet comfort food, look no farther. Morocho is a warm, sweet, milky corn pudding which is served as a drink but eaten with a spoon.
- Come y Bebe. Are you a fruit salad lover? If so this fresh fruit salad drink may be one of the best Ecuador desserts for you. It’s a mix of tropical fruit, usually, banana, papaya, and pineapple served in orange juice.
- Arroz con leche. This is another popular comfort food. It’s a sweet rice pudding which is served warm with cinnamon and raisins. The name means rice with milk, and its main ingredients are rice, milk, cinnamon, and sugar.

- Dulce de Higo/Higos Con Queso: Sweet Figs and Cheese. Dulce de higos (or higos con queso – figs with cheese) is an amazing Ecuadorian dessert which consists of green figs preserved/candied in a panela sauce and a side of queso fresco.
- Suspiro: Baked Meringue. Suspiros, or baked meringues, are amazing! They are so light and they melt in your mouth. Suspiros are made with whipped egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar or lime/lemon juice or vanilla extract, and some food coloring if you like.
- Chocolate con Queso: Hot Chocolate with Cheese. Well, now this one is a bit weird. I love it, but I get that it might seem weird if you’ve never tried it before.
- Mil Hojas: Thousand Pages (Napoleon Cake) This is a French dessert, but it’s very common in Ecuador and is amazing! In Ecuador, they generally call it ‘mil hojas‘ and you can find it at almost all the bakeries.
- Espumilla: Sweet Mousse. Espumilla is sold like ice cream all over Ecuador, it’s great for the vendors because it doesn’t melt. It’s made with fruit pulp, sugar, flavorless gelatin, and egg whites.
- Tres Leches: Three Milks. Tres leches is a very moist, sweet cake that is extremely popular in Ecuador and can be purchased at most panadería. It is basically a sponge cake that absorbs milk, whipping cream, and condensed milk.
- Dulce de Leche or Manjar: Milk Caramel. Dulce de leche is a very sweet caramel-like candy spread. I know that doesn’t make much sense but I don’t know how else to explain it.
- Helados de Paila: Traditional Ice-Cream. In my opinion, one of the greatest things about helados de paila is watching them being made. These are honest to goodness traditional ice-creams and it’s amazing to watch the process!!
- Ecuadorian Quesadillas. I know what you might be thinking; quesadillas aren’t desserts. Ecuadorian quesadillas are different than Mexican quesadillas. While Mexican quesadillas look pretty much like soft-shell tacos (don’t kill me), Ecuadorian quesadillas are pentagon-shaped, cream cheese and sugar-filled pastries.
- Alfajores Rellenos de Manjar. Alfajores con manjar are amazing little cookies that are super sweet and have a really cool texture. They are filled with the dulce de leche a.k.a manjar that I talked about in #7.

- Melcocha (Sugarcane Candy) Melcocha is an incredible handmade candy made with panela. It is known as alfeñique in Spain, and was previously called al-fanid in Moorish Iberia.
- Huevos Mollos (Creamy Candy Eggs) Huevos mollos are sweet little balls of heaven. In Manabi, Ecuadorian families make a living preparing these yummy desserts, alongside troliches; a similar recipe minus the egg.
- Espumillas. Espum a means “foam”, so espumillas are… little foams! What espumillas really are is a glorious mix of meringue, syrup, and tangy fruit pulp.
- Alfajores (Caramel Cookies) If Ecuador has a national cookie, it has to be alfajores. They’re popular throughout Latin America, but we still think of them as ours, originating from the province of Manabí.
- Natilla (Cornstarch Custard) Compared to standard custard (or crème anglaise, if you prefer), the Ecuadorian version is definitely on the firm side, so firm that it can actually be cut into blocks for serving.
- Helado de Paila (Paella Pan Ice Cream) Depending on what kind of neighborhood we’re talking about, it’s not uncommon for Ecuadorian families to sell helados (ice creams or popsicles) from their front porches.
- Cocadas (Coconut Balls) If coconuts and sugarcane grew abundantly in your neighborhood, you would inevitably figure out some way of combining these into a delicious dessert, right?
- Turrón de Ajonjoli (Sesame Seed Praline) It’s no secret that everybody likes crunchy food; in fact, an audible crack when you take a bite literally makes food taste better.
- Come y Bebe (Fruit Salad) One reason I’ve included plain ol’ fruit salad on this list is due to its expressive Ecuadorian name: come y bebe, meaning “eat and drink”.
- Chucula (Plantain Smoothie) Ever had a plantain smoothie? Ever had a plantain?! They’re cheap (in Ecuador, 25 cents will get you a decent bunch), they’re incredibly nutritious, and they look like bananas, but don’t be fooled.
