These old fashioned date cookies are accented with orange peel and a buttery orange frosting.

3/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1 (8-ounce) package chopped dates
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup orange juice
1 large Land O Lakes® Egg
1 tablespoon freshly grated orange zest
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
Frosting
2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter softened
1 tablespoon freshly grated orange zest
2 to 3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Combine 3/4 cup butter, sugar, water, and dates in 3-quart saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, 5-8 minutes or until dates are softened. Remove from heat; cool 15 minutes. Add all remaining cookie ingredients; mix well.
  • Drop dough by tablespoonfuls, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 12-14 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to cooling rack. Cool completely.
  • Combine all frosting ingredients except orange juice in small bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often and gradually adding enough orange juice for desired spreading consistency. Frost cooled cookies.

1/2 c shortening
3/4 c brown sugar, firmly packed
2 large eggs, room temp
1/4 c milk
1 1/2 c all purpose flour, sifted
1 tsp baking powder
1 c oats, quick cooking
1 c dates, chopped
1 c nuts, chopped

Steps:

  • 1. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and milk; combine well.
  • 2. Sift together the dry ingredients (except oats); add gradually to wet ingredients, mixing well. Add oats, nuts and dates; mix well again.
  • 3. Drop onto a cookie sheet and bake 15 to 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

1/2 tsp baking powder

ORANGE BUTTER FROSTING
2 1/2 Tbsp butter
1 1/2 c powdered sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp orange juice
2 tsp grated orange rind

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 400°. Mix butter, sugar and egg thoroughly. Stir in orange juice and rind. Stir in dry ingredients and mix well.
  • 2. Drop rounded teaspoons of dough 2" apart on a baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes or until delicately browned on edges.
  • 3. Mix frosting ingredients together. When cookies are cooled, frost.

These soft brown sugar drop cookies are topped with a lovely sweet and sticky date filling. Everyone loves these! They are beautiful with a cold glass of milk.

4 ounces dried pitted dates, chopped
3 fluid ounces water
1/8 cup sugar
1/4 cup (60g) butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup (100g) soft light brown sugar, packed
1 large free range egg yolk, freeze the white for another use
2 TBS warm water
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup (140g) plain all purpose flour
1/3 tsp baking soda
pinch salt

Steps:

  • First make the filling. Put all of the ingredients into a sauce pan over medium heat. Bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring often, until the mixture is fairly smooth and thick. Set aside to cool.
  • Preheat the oven to 350*F/180*C/ gas mark 4. Line a large baking sheet with some baking paper and set aside.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, using an electric hand mixer. Beat in the water, egg yolk and vanilla. Whisk together the flour, salt and soda. Beat this into the creamed mixture until thoroughly combined.
  • Scoop the mixture into 12 equal portions on the baking sheet, leaving at least two inches in between each.
  • Using the back of a wet teaspoon, make a small hollow in the center of each cookie. Spoon 1 teaspoon of the date filling into each hollow.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely before eating.

1 cup sour cream
2 eggs
3 tablespoons grated orange zest
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

⅔ cup orange juice
¼ cup margarine, melted
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
3 tablespoons orange juice

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the margarine, sugar and sour cream until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in 3 tablespoons orange zest. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into the sugar mixture alternately with 2/3 cup orange juice. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. In a small bowl, stir together the melted margarine, confectioners' sugar and 1 tablespoon orange zest. Mix remaining orange juice in 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Spread over cooled cookies.

This recipe is from my great grandmother. I entered these in our County Fair. There were over 60 entries in the drop cookie category. I received 2nd place. Pretty darn good, huh? My great grandmother would have been so proud. You can make sour milk by combining 1/2 cup of milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar and allow to set 10 minutes.

1 cup butter flavored shortening

1 tablespoon orange zest
½ cup sour milk

1 egg
2 teaspoons finely grated orange rind

Steps:

  • Sift flour, baking soda & salt together 3 times. Add dates & walnuts.
  • Cream shortening & then blend in brown sugar, then add egg and beat well.
  • Stir in orange rind to the shortening mixture.
  • Add the flour mixture, combining until well mixed.
  • Drop dough by spoonful, well apart on greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350F for 10 minutes.
