  • Crochet Chain Stitch. Before learning the chain stitch, learn the slip knot, which is what you need to do to secure the yarn on the hook to begin crocheting.
  • Crochet Slip Stitch. Crochet slip stitches are small and simple. They are the foundation of all crochet. The abbreviation for slip stitch in a pattern is usually "sl st."
  • Single Crochet Stitch. Learning the crochet chain and the slip stitch gives you a solid foundation to start crocheting projects. The single crochet stitch broadens your ability to crochet even more projects.
  • Half Double Crochet Stitch. Half double crochet stitch builds upon the basic single crochet stitch by adding an extra step. The height of half double crochet stitch is halfway between single and double crochet stitch.
  • Double Crochet Stitch. The double crochet stitch, abbreviated "dc," combines well with all the other basic stitches. The double crochet stitch is the cornerstone of granny square crochet, filet crochet, v-stitch crochet, and other popular crochet patterns.
  • Treble Crochet Stitch. The treble crochet stitch, also known as the triple crochet stitch, is abbreviated in patterns as "tr." The stitch is taller than the double crochet stitch and follows the same basic steps.

From crochet.com
  • Understand Your Legend or Key. Begin by finding your legend. This might also be referred to as a “Key” or “Stitch Key.” This will identify any stitch symbols, specific colors, or additional notations specific to the chart.
  • Find your Starting Place. A chart worked in rows will start at the bottom with the first row noted as “Row 1,” “Setup Row,” or “Foundation Row.” A stitch pattern worked in the round will begin at the center.
  • Identify Rows or Rounds. To see which stitch belongs with which row, Right Side (RS) rows are often in black while Wrong Side (WS) rows are often in blue.
  • Look for Repeats. Rather than charting the entire pattern, charts will indicate which stitches need to be repeated with a red outline or yellow highlighting.
  • Understand what Colors Mean. You already know that black is a RS row, blue is a WS row, and yellow or red are used to indicate a repeat. There might be additional colors on your chart that indicate rows overlapping one another (like with a charted mandala pattern) or stitches that are only needed for certain sizes (in some garments).
  • Know Your Symbols. Stitch symbols can vary slightly from chart to chart, so it is always worth checking your legend. We’ve included a long list of common symbols you might encounter below.
