Here's an easy dessert that was the result of an "accident" at the bakery one day. Some small chocolate cakes refused to come out of the their pans (someone forgot to grease and flour!). Sad at the thought of throwing out all that delicious cake, Jennifer assembled layers of broken cake, pudding, whipped cream, and chocolate cookie crumbs. The results were fabulous, and many customers come back asking if any more "mistakes" have been made so they can have their terrific trifle!

Number Of Ingredients 7

Use your favorite chocolate cake recipe or even a box of your favorite chocolate cake mix. Allow cake to cool for 15 minutes before proceeding. Break up the cake into small pieces in a large bowl.
2 packages instant chocolate pudding mix
3 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
About 1 cup chocolate wafer crumbs, or chocolate-sandwich cookies, crushed into crumbs

Steps:

  • Prepare the chocolate cake as recommended above.
  • To prepare the chocolate pudding filling: In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat the instant pudding and the milk for 3 minutes. Place uncovered in the refrigerator and chill until set, about 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a medium-size bowl, whip the heavy cream with the sugar and the vanilla extract until soft peaks form, being careful not to overwhip.
  • To assemble the trifle: Place 1/3 of the cake in the bottom of a large glass bowl. Place over this 1/3 of the pudding mixture, spreading evenly with a rubber spatula. Spread 1/3 of the whipped cream over this. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the cookie crumbs. Proceed in this fashion until three layers have been assembled, ending with a dusting of the cookie crumbs. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, or overnight, before cutting and serving.

This is my all time favorite pudding recipe. I use it for anything that needs chocolate pudding. Home made is always so much better! Pies, Trifles, or just plain with whipped cream. It is smooth, creamy and a taste that will send you to heaven with delight! Oh, did I say easy to make too? Enjoy!

2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
3 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 eggs
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Steps:

  • Put milk in sauce pan. Add the cocoa, sugar, and cornstarch together, mix well add to the milk. Now add eggs. With a whisk, whisk till all is smooth and blended. Over medium heat, heat till a soft boil, add chocolate chips. Continue to stir for about another 2 minute or till nice and thick.
  • Take off the stove and add the vanilla and butter. Pour into small pudding dishes or bowl or pie crust or what ever you want.

1 package devil's food cake mix (regular size)
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
1 cup cold water
1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 cups fresh strawberries, chopped
2 cups fresh raspberries
2 kiwifruit, peeled and chopped

Steps:

  • Prepare cake batter according to package directions; pour into a greased 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack. Crumble enough cake to measure 8 cups; set aside. (Save remaining cake for another use.) , In a large bowl, whisk the milk, water and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes or until soft-set. Fold in the whipped cream. , To assemble, spread 2-1/2 cups pudding mixture in a 4-qt. glass bowl. Top with half the crumbled cake; sprinkle with 1 tablespoon orange juice. Arrange half the berries and kiwi over cake. , Repeat pudding and cake layers; sprinkle with remaining orange juice. Top with remaining pudding mixture. Spoon remaining fruit around edge of bowl. Cover and refrigerate until serving.
