In an effort to lose weight, I wanted to find a healthy, sweet and filling beverage. I came up with this chocolate banana smoothie recipe that fits the bill. -Katherine Lipka, Galesburg, Michigan

2 cups cold 2% milk
1 package (1.4 ounces) sugar-free instant chocolate pudding mix
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
2 large ripe frozen bananas, sliced
2 cups coarsely crushed ice cubes

Steps:

  • In a blender, combine the milk, pudding mix and vanilla; cover and process until blended. Add the bananas and ice; cover and process until smooth. Pour into chilled glasses; serve immediately.

2 cups chilled sweetened chocolate soy milk
1/2 cup baby spinach leaves
3/4 cup frozen banana chunks (about 2 medium), peeled
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 tablespoon milled flax seed
Chocolate syrup, optional

Steps:

  • In a blender, add about half the soy milk and the spinach. Puree until the spinach dissolves, about 30 seconds. Add the remaining soy milk, banana chunks, vanilla extract, flax seed, and chocolate syrup, if using, and blend until the mixture reaches a smooth consistency, another 30 seconds. Divide mixture between two chilled glasses with straws.
  • Cook's Note: If the smoothie is looking a little too green from the spinach, add a squeeze of chocolate syrup to enhance the smoothie's brown color.

1 large frozen or fresh Banana, chopped
2-3 teaspoons unsweetened Cocoa Powder (to taste)
3/4 cup Milk
1 Ice Cube
1/2 tablespoon Honey or Sugar

Steps:

  • In this recipe, Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder is used. If it is not available, you can use any other brand's sweetened or unsweetened cocoa powder. If you are using sweetened cocoa powder, increase the amount of cocoa powder to 1½ tablespoons and decrease the amount of sugar to 1 teaspoon or as per your taste.
  • Pour milk in a blender jar and add banana.
  • Add cocoa powder, sugar and a ice cube.
  • Blend until smooth and no chunks of banana.
  • Pour prepared chocolate and banana smoothie into a serving glass, garnish with chocolate shavings and serve.

1/2 tbsp almond butter
3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (more if needed)
1/4 cup oats
2 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp flaxseed meal
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1/4 cup ice

Steps:

  • Add everything to the blender and blend until smooth and creamy. If the mixtrue is too thick, add a little extra almond milk.
  • If you have an older or less powerful blender, start by pulsing the oats a few times so they break down into a flour. Then add the remaining ingredients. This helps to make sure the oats are fully blended into the smoothie.
  • If the banana isn't ripe, this smoothie may not be sweet enough. You can add honey, maple syrup, or Stevia to sweeten things up if needed.
