CHEESE ROLL-UPS

Teach kids a lifetime cookery skill with a special recipe from CBeebies' 'i can cook'- these buns show how to make dough

Provided by Good Food team

Categories     Snack, Treat

Time 55m

Yield Makes 6

Number Of Ingredients 5

200g self-raising flour , plus extra for dusting
50g butter , softened
1 tsp paprika
100-125ml/3½-4fl oz milk
50g ready-grated mature cheddar

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the flour and butter in a bowl and rub them together with your fingers. Rubbing in mixture with cold butter is hard and tiring on young fingers, so use slightly softened butter - but not so soft that it is oily. Now stir in the paprika and mix again.
  • Add 100ml milk and mix with a fork until you get a soft dough. Add a splash more milk if the dough is dry. This process will teach you how to feel the dough and decide if it needs more liquid. You can always add more milk if required.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough like pastry to about 0.5cm thick. Try to keep a rectangular shape. Only roll in one direction, and roll and turn, roll and turn - by keeping the dough moving, you avoid finding it stuck at the end.
  • Sprinkle the grated cheese on top, then roll up like a sausage along the long side. Cut into 12 thick rings using a table knife. Get an adult to show you how to hold the dough with one hand and cut straight through with the other.
  • Line the baking tray with baking parchment. Place the roll-ups on the parchment, cut-side down, almost touching each other, making sure that you can see the spiral. Get an adult to put them in the oven for you and bake for 20-25 mins until golden and melty. Ask an adult to remove them from the oven, then leave to cool. The cheese roll-ups will keep for up to 3 days in an airtight container.

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     appetizer

Time 1h20m

Yield 32 pieces

Number Of Ingredients 6

Two 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
4 ounces jarred salsa (hot)
4 green onions, finely sliced
4 large flour tortillas
10 slices bacon, cut into small pieces and cooked till crisp
16 thin slices deli ham

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese, salsa and onions until fully combined. Spread the tortillas with the mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch edge. Top each with bacon and ham, then roll into tight cylinders and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Remove from fridge, discard the plastic wrap and cut each roll into 1-inch pieces, discarding the uneven ends (or eating them while preparing, like I did!). Each roll should yield eight pieces. CHILI-CHEESE ROLL-UPS

Chili-Cheese Roll-Ups image

This is a snack I've made for my son when he wants something a little more filling than crackers or a cookie. It could also be made as a dinner entree served alongside a salad or with some refried beans. It uses roasted garlic which I make earlier in the day (cut a 1/2-inch off the top of a head of garlic, take off loose skins, put it on a piece of heavy duty foil, sprinkle a generous amount of olive oil on top, wrap foil tightly around the head of garlic and cook at 325°F for an hour. Remove, cool, and squeeze out creamy garlic paste from each clove).

Time 30m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/2 cup diced onion
2 teaspoons roasted garlic
1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons chili powder
salt and pepper, to taste
1 tomatoes
8 ounces of processed bar cheese (such as Velveeta)
6 burrito-size flour tortillas
1 1/2 cups shredded lettuce

Steps:

  • Preheat a larage sauté pan on medium-high for 2-3 minutes.
  • Spray pan with a cooking spray such as Pam. Add onions and garlic; sauté 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add ground beef, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook 5-7 until meat is brown and no pink remains. Stir frequently and break up meat as it cooks.
  • While meat is browning, cut tomato into quarters and remove core. Dice into bite-size pieces and set aside. Dice cheese into bite-size pieces.
  • Drain beef and return to pan. Add cheese and heat until cheese is melted, stirring frequently, and reducing heat if needed. Remove from heat and let stand 2 minutes.
  • Remove tortillas from package and place on paper towel. Place in microwave and heat on high for 30 seconds.
  • Assemble roll-ups as follows: Place tortillas on flat surface and add 1/2 cup beef mixture to each tortilla. Divide tomato and lettuce between each tortilla. Fold one side up about 1 inch to form the bottom, and roll tortilla to make a cylinder shape. Serve.

CHILE CHEESE ROLL-UPS

Chile Cheese Roll-ups image

This is a wonderful appetizer, and works well for potlucks too. I think I saw it in the Sunday paper advertising section about 10 years ago. If you can make your own fresh pico de gallo or salsa, wonderful, but if not, jarred salsa works just fine. Cooking time includes 1 hour chilling time.
