BUNNY PRETZELS

Bunny Pretzels image

A quick and easy way to make homemade pretzels. They can be brushed with butter or dipped in cinnamon sugar, just like they do at the mall. This is a treat I like to make for our Easter egg hunt.

Categories     Bread     Yeast Bread Recipes     Pretzel Recipes

Time 45m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 8

cooking spray
4 cups water
¼ cup baking soda
1 (11 ounce) package refrigerated French bread dough (such as Pillsbury®)
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon coarse sea salt
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet with cooking spray.
  • Mix 4 cups water and baking soda together in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Pour into a shallow dish.
  • Flatten bread dough on a floured work surface; cut into 3 pieces, each about 6 inches long. Slice each piece into 4 long strips. Break a 1-inch piece off each strip; roll into a ball for the tail. Roll the remainder of each strip into a log about 9 inches long.
  • Wrap 1 log around the tail to make the body; twist twice to make the head and ears. Repeat with remaining 11 strips.
  • Submerge "bunnies," 2 at a time, into the water-baking soda mixture for 30 seconds. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Adjust ears if they became untwisted.
  • Whisk egg yolk and 1 tablespoon water together in a small bowl. Brush over bunnies. Sprinkle salt on top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until warmed through, about 5 minutes. Move around with a spatula to ensure they don't stick. Continue baking until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer to cooling racks. Brush with melted butter while still warm.

Provided by Jaclyn Shimmel

Categories     Dessert

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 8

10 cups popcorn *
2 cups pretzel sticks
2 cups strawberry wafers, chopped
1 ⅓ cups mini marshmallows
1-12 oz bag of white chocolate chips
blue food coloring
purple food coloring
pastel sprinkles

Steps:

  • Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Spread popcorn on baking sheet in an even layer. Top with pretzel sticks, strawberry wafers, and mini marshmallows.

  • Transfer each color of melted chocolate into a plastic baggie. Snip the corner off to form a makeshift piping bag. Drizzle oven snack mix.
  • Quickly add sprinkles, before the chocolate sets.
  • Place baking sheet in refrigerator until the melted chocolate sets. Once set, remove from fridge and transfer to an airtight container to store until serving.

  • Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together until well-combined. Take out about 1 c. of the flour and keep nearby in a measuring cup nearby. Add the yeast mix, oil, maple syrup, and thickened psyllium into the bowl with flour and stir until dough becomes scrappy. Start adding the other half of the flour, 1/4 c. at a time until mixed in and a dough starts to form. Start kneading the dough with your hands for a couple of minutes in the bowl at this time to get it smooth. The dough should be moist but not sticky.
  • Divide the dough into six, even and smooth balls.Roll each ball out with your hands on a lined flat surface until you have a long 14″ snake-like dough piece. For the bunny shape, cut off 2″ of the dough and set aside. For regular soft pretzel shapes, keep at 14″. Follow the tutorials in the post for how to shape your pretzels. For the bunny, take the remainder 2″ piece, roll it up and fill in the gap for the tail.

  • Hay – 80% of rabbit food. Domestic adult bunnies need unlimited grassy hays like timothy, orchard, oats, and meadow, among other grasses or a mix. It should account for at least 80% of their food intake.
  • Fresh foods and veggies 10-15% of food intake. Fresh foods include vegetables, weeds, fruits, flowers, non-leafy vegetables, and other safe plants. They are a source of nutrients like vitamins A, C, carbs, minerals, water, and some fiber.
  • Rabbit pellets 5-10% of food intake. Rabbit pellets are higher in calories and have added vitamins, essential fats, proteins, and minerals. They will help ensure your rabbit meets all its nutrition needs because factors like soil, weather condition, and location may affect nutrients in hay and fresh foods.
  • Bunny treats 0-5% Treats are essential for training, bonding, and playtime. You can use fruits and some non-leafy veggies or go for those on sale. Avoid those with whole grains, nuts, dried fruits, muesli diets, soluble carbohydrates, junk foods, or animal products, and so on.
  • Vitamin supplements. If you give them well-balanced diets, they don’t need vitamins as they can get them from pellets, cecotropes, and other foods. Only supplement if your vet advises you to do so.
  • Drinking water. All your rabbits have access to an unlimited amount of fresh, clean, drinking water using anti-tipping bowls, drinking bottles, or automated water dispensers.

THESE 15 FOODS COULD HARM OR KILL YOUR RABBIT | PETA

From peta.org
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • Yogurt Drops. According to Rabbit.org, research suggests that yogurt drops may contribute to lethal cases of enterotoxemia, “a toxic overgrowth of ‘bad’ bacteria in the intestinal tract.”
  • Bread, Pasta, Cookies, and Crackers. These high-carb sugary treats will really only “treat” your bunny to stomach issues. Avoid foods high in sugar or artificial ingredients, as—like yogurt drops—they could potentially lead to enterotoxemia.
  • Avocado. When you think of ideal rabbit snacks, fresh fruits and veggies probably come to mind. Avocados, however, should never be included in your bunny’s diet.
  • Cereal. Feeding your rabbit cereal—like muesli, a processed food made up of flaked maize, peas, pellets, grains, and seeds—can lead to tooth and tummy problems.
  • Iceberg Lettuce. This may come as a shock, but you should avoid feeding your rabbit light-colored lettuce, including iceberg, as it can contain lactucarium, a chemical that can be harmful to your bunny’s health if ingested.
  • Silverbeet. Like iceberg lettuce, silverbeet—sometimes referred to as chard—is another leafy green that your rabbit should avoid. According to a veterinary center in New Zealand, the vegetable can cause your bunny to suffer from colic and bloating and should be replaced with high-fiber fruits, veggies, and herbs.
  • Hamster Food. We get it. You may have more than one animal companion, and perhaps you were hoping to feed two birds with one hand, so to speak. But while rabbits require a special high-fiber diet—think high-quality Timothy hay, fresh vegetables, and herbs—hamster food will do little to nothing for your bunny’s nutrition.
  • Walnuts. Walnuts are high in fat, not fiber, which can cause your rabbit uncomfortable indigestion. If you’re looking for a healthy snack to feed your bunny, try fresh veggies or herbs.
  • Oatmeal. Although feeding rabbits oatmeal won’t cause them major harm, it’s not an ideal meal. Rabbits need large amounts of Timothy hay, hearty greens, and fresh water—oatmeal does nothing to boost their nutritious diet.
  • Chocolate. Chocolate is an absolute no-no for bunnies. As with companion dogs, chocolate has no place in your rabbit’s diet. The sweet treat can be poisonous to rabbits and should never be fed to them.
