The only way to make monkey bread better? Give it an apple fritter upgrade and a vanilla glaze.

3 cups Original Bisquick™ mix
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced small
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream or milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 12-cup fluted tube cake pan with cooking spray.
  • In large bowl, mix Bisquick mix and granulated sugar. In another bowl, mix next 4 dough ingredients. Add to dry ingredients in large bowl, and mix until just incorporated. Add apples; gently stir in.
  • Shape dough into tablespoon-sized portions (about 30 balls of dough).
  • In small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Dip balls of dough into the 1/2 cup melted butter; coat them in cinnamon sugar mixture, and place in pan.
  • Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until monkey bread is puffed and golden brown. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn upside down onto heatproof serving plate; remove pan.
  • In small bowl, beat Glaze ingredients with whisk. Drizzle over warm monkey bread. Serve immediately.

1/2 cup cold water
1 egg
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 large unpeeled Granny Smith apple, chopped (about 1 3/4 cups)
1/4 cup powdered sugar

Steps:

  • In deep fryer or 4-quart heavy saucepan, heat oil to 350°F.
  • In large bowl, stir Bisquick mix, water, egg, granulated sugar and cinnamon. Fold in apple. Working in batches, drop batter by tablespoonfuls into hot oil. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, or until golden brown. Use a metal slotted spoon to remove fritters from oil; drain on paper towels.
  • Before serving, sprinkle fritters with powdered sugar.

1/2 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Cream or Ice cream, if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Grease bottom and sides of 8-inch square pan with shortening.

1 quart vegetable oil for deep-frying
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 cups apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup cinnamon sugar

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or electric skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Pour in the milk, eggs and oil and stir until well blended. Mix in apples until they are evenly distributed.
  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden on both sides, about 5 minutes depending on the size. Fry in smaller batches so they are not crowded. Remove from the hot oil using a slotted spoon and drain briefly on paper towels. Toss with cinnamon sugar while still warm.

1 cup cake flour
1 tablespoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1/3 cup whole milk
4 teaspoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon orange juice
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped peeled tart apple
Oil for frying
Confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, combine the egg, milk, butter, orange juice, zest and vanilla. Add to dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in apples., In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat 1/4 in. of oil to 375°. Drop batter by rounded tablespoons into oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners' sugar. Serve warm.

2 cups milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 package regular active dry yeast
4 1/2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons butter, melted
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 medium Granny Smith apples, thinly sliced
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 to 3 tablespoons milk

Steps:

  • In 3-quart saucepan, stir together milk, oil and 1/2 cup of the brown sugar. Heat to simmering over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; cool until warm (between 90°F and 110°F).
  • Add yeast and 2 cups of the flour; stir until blended. Cover; let rise in warm place 1 hour or until doubled in size. Stir in remaining 2 1/2 cups flour, the salt, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 8x4- or 9x5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
  • On floured work surface, roll dough into 20x12-inch rectangle. Cut into 5 (4-inch strips), then cut crosswise 6 times, making 30 (4x2-inch) rectangles.
  • In small bowl, stir together melted butter, cinnamon and remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar. Spread mixture over rectangles. Place 1 or 2 apple slices on each rectangle. Create 5 stacks of dough with 6 rectangles in each stack. Place stacks in loaf pan, edges facing toward bottom of pan and sugared sides facing center of loaf, not ends of pan.
  • Bake 25 to 35 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to cooling rack. Cool about 1 hour.
  • In a small bowl, mix glaze ingredients with wire whisk until smooth and thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle glaze over loaf.
