  • Know the risks. Safe at-home removal is possible, but with caveats. "Each company puts out a lash adhesive remover that is specially formulated to break down the bonds of their glue, free of damage to the natural lash," explains Hillman.
  • Never pick or pull. It can be tempting to try to pick or pull away lash fibers, but that's actually the worst thing you can do. Synthetic fibers are bonded directly onto your natural lashes, and picking them off means you'll remove those, too.
  • Start with oil-based products. Start by incorporating an oil-based makeup remover into your nightly routine. Used daily, the oils will gently start to weaken the attachment of the extensions.
  • Steam can help, too. Steam can also help loosen the adhesive bonds. If you don't have a facial steamer (opens in new tab), try tenting your head with a towel over a bowl of hot water or even a humidifier, being sure to keep your eyelids closed as the steam hits your face.
  • Try a lash curler. "Try a mechanical curler (opens in new tab) to bend the attachments where the extensions are placed," suggests Magno. "This method could be used before the oil or after the steaming as an added enforcement."

  • Take a Hot Shower. If you're trying to expedite the fall-out process, try taking a hot shower. Just like your lash artist should advise you not to get your lashes wet and to avoid steam in order to lengthen the life of your lashes, doing the opposite can help loosen any stragglers that are still hanging on to your lash line for dear life.
  • Use an Oil-Based Cleanser. Any experienced lash artist should tell you not to use oil-based cleansers after getting a fresh set, as this can compromise the integrity of the lash glue and cause your extensions to fall out sooner.
  • Apply an Oil. While our lash experts do not recommend the use of the below oils to remove lash extensions as many companies create specific removers to safely dissolve the adhesive, Nazarian says that some oils can help loosen them.
  • Try a Professional-Grade Lash Glue Dissolver. Since your eyelashes are delicate and the skin around your eyes is also sensitive, it's imperative to know everything on how to remove eyelash extensions at home before attempting to do this on a whim with little to no guidance.
  • See a Professional. The safest way (both for your natural lashes and your eyes themselves) to remove your eyelash extensions is to have them removed by a professional.

  • Use an oil-based makeup remover. When it comes to removing eyelash extensions, most of the “dont’s” your lash technician shared with you after your application are now encouraged, and that includes using an oil-based makeup remover.
  • Take a hot shower. Another major no-no when a new set of lashes is applied? Hot water. While hitting the showers might not be as effective as it would be when the lash adhesive is still setting, a long, steamy shower can help loosen the eyelash extension glue.
  • Try using castor oil. If you’re desperate to get your lashes off, you can use castor oil as an overnight treatment to dissolve the bonds as you sleep.
  • Don’t pick or pull at your lashes (fake or real). Even if you’ve tried the above tips and are still stuck with one random lash, resist the urge to reach for the tweezer, because you could wind up leaving your natural lashes severely damaged.
  • More mascara. Instead of picking or pulling, you can try to conceal remaining lash extensions with lengthening mascara and eyeliner. “Using a good black liner on your upper lid will mask those stragglers right up,” says Ciulei Marin.
  • Be gentle. Once your extensions have fallen out, be gentle to your natural eyelashes--especially when applying or removing makeup. “Try not to put too much pressure on the lashes or eye area and avoid vigorously rubbing,” says Ciulei Marin.
