  • Apricots: Great for fiber but full of potassium, apricots are not ideal for those with kidney disease. The potassium content is even higher in dried apricots, so those need to be avoided entirely as part of any renal diet.
  • Avocados: For a healthy individual, avocados are nutritious and beneficial, but for those with kidney problems, these fruits can be harmful. Avocados contain almost double the amount of potassium of bananas.
  • Bananas: Full of potassium, bananas can reduce kidney efficiency. Tropical fruits in general are high in potassium, but pineapples prove to be more kidney-friendly.
  • Brown Rice: Brown rice contains more potassium and phosphorus than white rice, so it can place unnecessary strain on already damaged kidneys. With portion control, some brown rice can be consumed as part of a balanced renal diet.
  • Canned Foods: Soups, as well as canned vegetables, are popular because of their convenience. The high sodium content is what gives these items a long shelf life but also makes them dangerous for impaired kidneys.
  • Dairy: While dairy foods contain potassium and phosphorus, it is the protein content that is concerning when it comes to renal failure. Too much protein in the diet leads to excess protein waste in the bloodstream, because impaired kidneys have trouble filtering the byproducts of protein metabolism.
  • Dark-Colored Soda: The additives in these drinks contain phosphorus, which helps prevent discoloration, adds flavor, and extends shelf life. While these additives are great for the soda, they are bad for you.
  • Dried Fruits: The drying of fruit concentrates all nutrients, and in the case of dates, raisins, and prunes, potassium is one such nutrient. Almost five times as much is found compared to their raw versions, meaning dried fruits should never be part of a renal diet.
  • Leafy Greens: The high potassium content of greens such as spinach, Swiss chard and beet greens is not ideal for impaired kidneys. Even when cooked, the potassium content remains high, so it is best to cut them out completely from your diet.
  • Oranges: As a fruit or in juice form, oranges contain potassium, making them dangerous for patients with kidney disease. Try apples, cranberries, or grapes instead.

KIDNEY HEALTH: 8 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR KIDNEYS HEALTHY

From healthline.com
Author Laura Goldman
  • Keep active and fit. Regular exercise is good for more than just your waistline. It can lower the risk of chronic kidney disease. It can also reduce your blood pressure and boost your heart health, which are both important for preventing kidney damage.
  • Manage your blood sugar. People with diabetes, or a condition that causes high blood sugar, may develop kidney damage. When your body’s cells can’t use the glucose (sugar) in your blood, your kidneys are forced to work extra hard to filter your blood.
  • Monitor blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause kidney damage. If high blood pressure occurs with other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol, the impact on your body can be significant.
  • Monitor weight and eat a balanced diet. People who are overweight or have obesity are at risk for a number of health conditions that can damage the kidneys.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. There’s no magic behind the cliché advice to drink eight glasses of water a day, but it’s a good goal precisely because it encourages you to stay hydrated.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking damages your body’s blood vessels. This leads to slower blood flow throughout your body and to your kidneys. Smoking also puts your kidneys at an increased risk for cancer.
  • Be aware of the amount of OTC pills you take. If you regularly take over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication, you may be causing kidney damage. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen and naproxen, can damage your kidneys if you take them regularly for chronic pain, headaches, or arthritis.
  • Have your kidney function tested if you’re at high risk. If you’re at high risk of kidney damage or kidney disease, it’s a good idea to have regular kidney function tests.

13 BEST FOODS FOR KIDNEY HEALTH - CNET

  • Fatty fish. Fish delivers protein, and when you choose a fatty fish like tuna, salmon or trout, you're also getting omega-3 fatty acids. According to the National Kidney Foundation, omega-3 fats may help reduce fat levels (triglycerides) in the blood and may also lower blood pressure.
  • Cabbage. This nutrient-dense vegetable is low in both potassium and sodium while packing in fiber, vitamins C and K and more. Plus, cabbage is versatile.
  • Bell peppers. Like cabbage, bell peppers pack in lots of good nutrients with low levels of potassium. With them, you get vitamins B6, B9, C and K, plus fiber.
  • Cranberries. Cranberries help to prevent urinary tract infections. While these usually stay in your bladder, they can travel up to your kidney, making kidney problems worse.
  • Blueberries. We've talked about some of the best foods for kidneys, but you can take it a step further. The question is: What foods help repair kidneys?
  • Dark, leafy greens. There are plenty of reasons to turn to dark, leafy greens like spinach or kale. They deliver so many nutrients that they can help you get key vitamins and minerals, plus immunity-boosting benefits.
  • Olive oil. Rich in antioxidants and healthy fatty acids, olive oil can boost your overall wellness. A study from Harvard University found that olive oil may lower cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia and some types of cancer.
  • Garlic. Another antioxidant-rich, inflammation-fighting food, garlic also contains a specific compound called allicin. For people with CKD, allicin -- an active compound found in garlic -- worked just as effectively to help protect kidney health as a prescription drug.
  • Onions. From the same family as garlic, onions give you another excellent and salt-free way to add flavor (bonus points if you saute them in olive oil).
  • Cauliflower. Cauliflower brings the crunch, paired with plenty of vitamins C, B6, B9 and K, along with fiber. It also contains compounds your body can use to neutralize certain toxins -- a big help when your kidneys aren't doing their best filtration work.
