4 ounces sliced swiss cheese (4 slices)
4 ounces sliced cooked turkey (4 slices)
8 slices firm white bread
3 eggs
2/3 cup milk
1 (2 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
3 tablespoons butter or 3 tablespoons margarine

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450ºF.
  • Place 1 slice of cheese and 1 slice of turkey on each of 4 bread slices.
  • In pie plate beat eggs, milk, and dry soup mix until well blended.
  • Dip each sandwich into egg mixture, spooning onion pieces onto bread.
  • Make sure all egg mixture is used.
  • Place butter in 15 x 10-inch jellyroll pan.
  • Set in oven a couple of minutes to melt butter.
  • Carefully place sandwiches in pan and drizzle any remaining egg mixture over them.
  • Bake 5 minutes.
  • Carefully turn sandwiches and continue baking until golden brown.

While Bennigans may not be around anymore, you can still enjoy their famous Monte Cristo sandwich at home.

9 slices Wheat bread
3 slices Deli turkey
3 slices Deli ham
3 slices American cheese
3 slices Swiss cheese
1 egg
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Place turkey and Swiss cheese on one slice of bread and ham and American cheese on another slice of bread. Place third slice in-between and secure the triple-decker sandwich in the corners with toothpicks.
  • Place egg in mixing bowl, add water and beat together. Add salt, sugar, flour, and baking powder. Beat batter until smooth.
  • Dip sandwich in batter and carefully cover all the sides and surface. Carefully place in hot oil and fry until golden. When the sandwich has turned a warm gold color remove it from the hot oil and place it on a paper towel. Let cool for a few minutes before removing the toothpicks. Before serving slice into fourths and sprinkle with powder sugar.
  • Serve with raspberry preserves, pickle garnish, and your favorite French fried potatoes.

My local Bennigans closed down over a year ago. I used to treat myself to my favorite sandwich of all time - The Monte Cristo. No one made it like they did! Had a craving for one and decided to do some research online and found the recipe! I used honey cured meats instead of just the regular meats and it came out AMAZING!!...

SANDWICH
9 slice whole wheat bread
3 slice honey cured turkey breast (luncheon meat)
3 slice honey cured ham (luncheon meat)
3 slice american cheese (white or yellow - does not matter)
3 slice swiss cheese
BATTER
1 egg
1 to 1&1/4 c water
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 & 1/2 c flour (all-purpose is fine)
1 Tbsp baking powder
vegetable oil (for deep frying)
powdered sugar (for dusting on top)
toothpicks (4 per sandwich)
DIPPING SAUCE
raspberry preserves

Steps:

  • 1. Separate the 9 pieces of bread on a cutting board.
  • 2. Put 3 slices of bread aside.
  • 3. Using the remaining 6 slices: On 3 pieces place one slice Turkey and one slice Swiss cheese. On the other 3 slices of bread; place one slice Ham and one slice American cheese.
  • 4. Using the 3 slices of bread you set aside earlier; layer the sandwich. (Should be Turkey/Swiss, bread, then Ham/American layer) Will be a triple decker sandwich. Will make 3 sandwiches.
  • 5. Place a tooth pick in each corner of the sandwiches so the sandwiches will hold together. (4 per sandwich - Total of 12 toothpicks).
  • 6. Crack egg in a medium/large mixing bowl. Add water and beat together until fully mixed.
  • 7. Add salt,sugar, baking powder, and flour and stir until batter is smooth.
  • 8. Dip sandwich in batter. Carefully cover all sides and surfaces. (Make sure every surface of the sandwich is covered in batter or it wont fry right)
  • 9. Carefully place in hot oil.
  • 10. Fry until golden brown (usually 3-5 minutes per side).
  • 11. Once it is golden brown remove from hot oil and place on a paper towel to drain off excess oil.
  • 12. Let cool for a few minutes.
  • 13. Remove the toothpicks.
  • 14. Slice in half, or into fourths.
  • 15. Put on a plate and dust with powdered sugar.
  • 16. Serve with a side of Raspberry preserves for dipping!
  • 17. Enjoy!!! :)

4 slices firm bread
4 teaspoons raspberry preserves
2 ounces very thinly sliced low-fat smoked ham
2 slices lowfat swiss cheese (2 ounces)
1/4 cup 1% low-fat milk
1 egg white
nonstick cooking spray
1 teaspoon sifted powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Spread one side of each slice of bread with preserves.
  • Layer ham and cheese between the spread side of the bread slices.
  • In a shallow bowl or pie plate, beat together milk and egg white.
  • Coat a nonstick pan or griddle with cooking spray.
  • Heat over medium heat.
  • Dip each sandwich in milk mixture, turning to coat.
  • Place in pan; cook 2 minutes per side or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
  • Yield: 2 servings.

A great brunch item! One of my husbands favorite filling, baked, french toast style, sandwiches filled with cheese, ham, turkey & mustard. Raspberry preserves is a must for him. Could be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a LESSER FAT Monte Cristo recipe being baked and not fried full of flavor! I also like to buy the low salt cold cuts or use fresh baked turkey leftovers sliced thin.

8 slices bread (I use challah)
4 teaspoons honey dijon mustard
8 slices thin deli sliced swiss cheese
8 slices thin deli ham
8 slices thin deli sliced turkey (I like smoked)
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons milk (low fat to try to keep it low in fat!)
powdered sugar, for dusting
raspberry preserves, for dipping

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 425°F.
  • Lightly butter a baking sheet pan. I use the spray.
  • Spread 1/2 teaspoon mustard on each slice of bread.
  • Layer between mustard sides of two slices of bread, 1 slice cheese, 2 slices ham, 2 slices turkey, and another slice of cheese.
  • Repeat to make four sandwiches. Whisk eggs, flour, butter, salt and pepper in a shallow dish until smooth.
  • Blend in milk.
  • DIP both sides of sandwiches into egg mixture until bread is lightly soaked.
  • Place on baking sheet; drizzle any remaining egg mixture over top of sandwiches.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes until bottom is golden brown.
  • Turn with wide spatula and continue baking 8-10 minutes or until second side is golden brown.
  • Serve warm dusted with powdered sugar and dip or spread raspberry preserves on sandwiches.
  • Garnish with fresh raspberries.

1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon parsley (optional)

Steps:

  • Assemble 2 sandwiches, each filled with 2 slices of the turkey and 2 slices of the ham.
