BARBECUE SAUCE

Barbecue Sauce image

The BEST barbecue sauce from scratch. An easy tangy and sweet homemade barbecue sauce recipe without ketchup. Ready in 15 minutes!

Provided by Erin Clarke / Well Plated

Categories     condiment

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 12

15 ounces tomato sauce ((1 standard can))
6 ounces tomato paste ((1 standard can))
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/8-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper ((optional but encouraged))

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan, stir together all of the ingredients: tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, dry mustard, garlic, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Cover with a lid slightly ajar so that the pot is mostly covered to deter splattering, but steam can still escape and the sauce can reduce. Let cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Enjoy immediately or let cool and store for later use.

Mix up the ingredients below and you'll have a mild-tasting sauce. Then, if you'd like, add in some pantry favorites like smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder to really bring in the flavor. The original recipe, in case you loved that, was 1 and 1/2 cups ketchup, 1/4 cup yellow mustard, 1/4 cup honey, a pinch of salt. The revised recipe is now given below. It's still very basic and can still be used as a sauce base but it has some more flavor elements to start with. -Christine

LOW CARB BBQ SAUCE- KETO FRIENDLY

Low Carb BBQ Sauce- Keto Friendly image

Our most requested low carb keto friendly recipe yet!

Provided by Melissa

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1/4 cup Sukrin Gold brown sugar substitute OR sweetener of your choice
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons real butter
1 can tomato paste- 6 oz
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dry yellow mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
1 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional

Steps:

  • In a sauce pan over medium, add sweetener, vinegars and water. Mix until sweetener is dissolved.
  • Add tomato paste and remaining ingredients. Stir until fully combined. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer.
  • Let simmer about 15 minutes to incorporate all ingredients and build flavor.
  • NOTES*
  • If you like a thinner sauce, add a touch more water until desired thickness is reached.
  • If you like a more sour sauce, add a little more vinegar.
  • Go easy with the liquid smoke, a little goes a long way!
  • This recipe is very easily adaptable to different sweeteners. Using a white sweetener will result in a sauce that is more red in color.
  • The butter makes a nice glossy finish and helps the sauce adhere to whatever you brush it on.
  • Store in pint sized mason jar refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

  • Preheat a saute pan over medium heat. Cook the chopped onion for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow some color and caramelization to develop in the pan. You'll deglaze with water and other ingredients in a few minutes.
  • Once the onion is golden, add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly so the garlic doesn't burn. Deglaze the pan with 1/4 cup of water.
  • Add the remaining ingredients - tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne, black pepper, salt, tamari, and liquid smoke, if using. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until slightly reduced.
