Steps:
- In a medium saucepan, stir together all of the ingredients: tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, molasses, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, dry mustard, garlic, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Cover with a lid slightly ajar so that the pot is mostly covered to deter splattering, but steam can still escape and the sauce can reduce. Let cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as desired. Enjoy immediately or let cool and store for later use.

BEST EVER HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE
Do you have ketchup, mustard and honey? You have to try this best EVER Basic Homemade BBQ Sauce. It's a simple base for starting your own BBQ sauce deliciousness. Mix up the ingredients below and you'll have a mild-tasting sauce. Then, if you'd like, add in some pantry favorites like smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder to really bring in the flavor. RECIPE UPDATE: A lot of people in the comments below really love this sauce as is, as does my family. However, a lot of people really dislike it also. I therefore retested the recipe and adjusted it. The original recipe, in case you loved that, was 1 and 1/2 cups ketchup, 1/4 cup yellow mustard, 1/4 cup honey, a pinch of salt. The revised recipe is now given below. It's still very basic and can still be used as a sauce base but it has some more flavor elements to start with. -Christine

Steps:
- In a sauce pan over medium, add sweetener, vinegars and water. Mix until sweetener is dissolved.
- Add tomato paste and remaining ingredients. Stir until fully combined. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer.
- Let simmer about 15 minutes to incorporate all ingredients and build flavor.
- NOTES*
- If you like a thinner sauce, add a touch more water until desired thickness is reached.
- If you like a more sour sauce, add a little more vinegar.
- Go easy with the liquid smoke, a little goes a long way!
- This recipe is very easily adaptable to different sweeteners. Using a white sweetener will result in a sauce that is more red in color.
- The butter makes a nice glossy finish and helps the sauce adhere to whatever you brush it on.
- Store in pint sized mason jar refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.

- Bring ingredients to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. It will probably sputter like crazy, so if you don't want to be cleaning your entire stove afterward, stir regularly.
- Simmer for 20-30 minutes. When finished and cooled, sauce should be slightly thick. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks, or freeze in ziploc bags or mason jars for a few months. Use in any recipe calling for bbq sauce.

- Whisk the tomato sauce, vinegar, maple syrup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chipotle in adobo, mustard, cumin, celery seed and smoked paprika together in a medium-size saucepan until very well combined. Season with salt and pepper and cayenne, to taste but be aware that the flavors will change, so season lightly for now.
- Simmer over medium heat for about 15 to 20 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the sauce is slightly thickened.
- Season again with salt and pepper, if needed. If you would like more spice, add more chipotles in adobo sauce or a more cayenne. Cook for 1 minute more to blend the flavors. Remove from the heat, allow to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
