BAKED ZITI (EASY PASTA CASSEROLE) VIDEO

Baked Ziti (Easy Pasta Casserole) VIDEO image

Baked Ziti is an easy, saucy, and cheesy pasta casserole. It has all of the great flavors of Lasagna but is simple to prepare and serve as a pasta bake.

Provided by Natasha Kravchuk

Categories     Easy

Time 57m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb ziti pasta (or penne pasta)
1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
1 onion (chopped)
2 garlic cloves (minced)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
5 cups marinara sauce
15 oz fresh ricotta
10 fresh basil leaves
12 oz mozzarella cheese (shredded, divided)
1 cup grated parmesan cheese (divided)

Steps:

  • Cook pasta in salted water according to package instructions until just aldente them drain (so not overcook since they will continue to cook in the oven).
  • In a deep pan or dutch oven, over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and onion, breaking up the beef with a spatula, until beef is fully cooked through and onions are softened (5-7 minutes). Add minced garlic, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and sautee another minute. Add 5 cups marinara, bring to a simmer and continue cooking 5 minutes then turn off the heat.
  • Spread a ladle of meat sauce over the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish.
  • Into the remaining sauce, add chopped basil and spoon in ricotta. Add cooked pasta and stir just until noodles are coated (you want to keep that ricotta texture)
  • Transfer half of the pasta to the casserole dish. Top with 1/2 of shredded mozzarella and 1/2 grated parmesan. Add remaining pasta and top with remaining mozzarella and parmesan.
  • Clear the edges of the pan so the cheese doesn't burn onto the dish. Bake at 350˚F for 25 minutes. Broil 1-2 minutes to brown the cheese. Let cool 5 minutes then garnish with basil if desired and serve.

SAUSAGE PASTA CASSEROLE

Sausage Pasta Casserole image

Provided by Nancy Fuller

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h10m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the baking dish
Kosher salt
1 pound rigatoni
1 pound sweet Italian sausage, removed from the casings
1 medium onion, sliced
1 medium bulb fennel, trimmed, cored and sliced
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes, crushed by hand
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 ounces)
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (1 ounce)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Brush a shallow 3-quart baking dish with olive oil. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until very al dente; you still want it to retain a little bite. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water. Drain well.
  • Meanwhile, in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the sausage and cook and crumble with a wooden spoon until no longer pink, about 4 minutes. Add the onion and fennel; cook until softened, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and cook until the garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and season with salt. Bring to a simmer and add the cream. If the sauce is too thick, add a little water from the pasta. Turn up the heat to medium high and simmer rapidly to thicken the sauce and blend the flavors, about 10 minutes.
  • Add the rigatoni and basil and toss to coat the pasta with the sauce. Remove from the heat and stir in half each of the mozzarella and parmesan. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and parmesan. Bake until browned and bubbly, 15 to 20 minutes. Let sit 10 minutes before serving.

CHEESY BEEF AND PASTA CASSEROLE

Cheesy Beef and Pasta Casserole image

Hearty comfort food that's EASY and IRRESISTIBLE!! Cheesy pasta and ground beef coated in marinara sauce and topped with more CHEESE!

Provided by Averie Sunshine

Categories     Pasta

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 12

16 ounces penne pasta, cooked according to package directions and drained
2 tablespoons olive oil, optional
1 pound lean ground beef (I used 93% lean)
1 medium sweet Vidalia onion, diced small
1 medium/large red bell pepper, diced small
3 to 5 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
1 teaspoon ground oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
one 26-ounce jar marinara or pasta sauce
3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
fresh basil or parsley, optional for garnishing

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375F and spray a 9×13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray; set aside.
  • Cook pasta according to package directions and drain.
  • While the pasta is cooking, to a large Dutch oven, optionally add the olive oil (my beef was very lean and the oil was necessary), beef, onion, red pepper, and cook over medium-high heat until beef is cooked through and vegetables have softened; stir frequently and crumble the beef while it cooks; do not drain.
  • Add the garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, and stir to combine. Cook for about 1 minute, or until garlic is fragrant.
  • Add the cooked pasta to the beef mixture, add the marinara, and stir to combine and coat evenly.
  • Add 1 1/2 cups cheese and stir to combine until the cheese has melted.
  • Turn mixture out into the prepared baking dish and evenly sprinkle the remaining 1 1/2 cups cheese over the top.
  • Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese has melted on top.
  • Optionally garnish with fresh herbs and serve immediately.

EASY VEGETABLE BAKED PASTA

Easy Vegetable Baked Pasta image

Vegetable baked pasta loaded with veggies, pockets of ricotta cheese, and topped with melty mozzarella. The vegetables you use can be adapted based on seasonality, check our article above for more suggestions. For a vegan variation, leave out the ricotta and mozzarella and instead stir a couple of tablespoons of nutritional yeast into the marinara sauce.

Provided by Adam and Joanne Gallagher

Categories     Dinner

Time 30m

Yield Makes 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 pound dried pasta; try penne, rigatoni, or ziti pasta
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1/2 medium onion, about 6 ounces
2 small bell peppers, about 8 ounces
8 ounces mushrooms, 1 1/4 cups sliced
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds or ground fennel, see notes
3 cups marinara sauce or use 1 (28-ounce) jar store-bought sauce
Handful of fresh basil leaves, torn or coarsely chopped
6 tablespoons ricotta cheese
2 cups coarsely shredded cheese; try mozzarella, fontina cheese or an Italian blend
Salt and fresh ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have an oven-safe 12-inch deep skillet, you can cook the veggies and bake the pasta in it. If you do not, prepare a 3-quart baking dish by lightly greasing with olive oil.
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, and then cook the pasta. Check the package for cook time, but cook the pasta two minutes less than what is recommend on the box (it will continue to cook in the oven). Before draining the pasta, reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water.
  • While the pasta cooks, prepare the vegetables. Slice the onions and bell peppers into 1/4-inch thick slices.
  • Using a damp paper towel, brush all dirt from mushrooms. Cut away and discard any hard stems. Chop into 1/4-inch slices or, if there are larger mushrooms like portobello, cut into 1/4-inch cubes.
  • Heat a wide skillet over medium-high heat. Add the oil then add the mushrooms, in one layer, and cook until browned on one side, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir then add the onions and peppers. Cook another 3 to 5 minutes or until the veggies are starting to soften and have some browned edges. Season to taste with salt and black pepper (I usually add 1/4 teaspoon of each).
  • Stir the fennel, marinara sauce, and basil into the vegetables. If your skillet is large enough, toss in the pasta and if the mixture seems dry, add a splash of the reserved pasta water. If the skillet is too small, combine the sauce and pasta in a bowl. Adjust with pasta water, and then add to a baking dish.
  • Taste the pasta and adjust with more salt and pepper. Tuck spoonfuls of ricotta around the pasta, and then top with the mozzarella cheese. Bake the pasta, uncovered, until the cheese melts and is bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes.

Stir in spinach and cook until the spinach is just wilted, about 1 minute.
  • Add the vegetable mixture, the crushed tomatoes and basil to the pasta and stir well. If using sausage for flexitarian option add it too.
  • Transfer the pasta and veggie mixture to the casserole dish. Dollop the ricotta over the top of the pasta. Top with the shredded cheese.

HOW TO MAKE BAKED PASTA CASSEROLES WITHOUT A RECIPE ...

From epicurious.com
Author Anna Stockwell
Published 2017-10-07
Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
  • Cook Some Pasta. Before you start cooking your pasta you want to preheat your oven to 325°F. While it's warming up, get a big pot of heavily salted water boiling for the pasta.
  • Prep Some Mix-Ins. While the water boils and your pasta cooks, use that time to prep whatever you want to bake with the pasta and cheese sauce. Around 3 cups of mix-ins per one pound of pasta is a good rule of thumb, but what those 3 cups consist of is totally up to you.
  • Make a Cheese Sauce. Make note of whatever weight of pasta you cooked, and then use an equal weight of cheese and one and a half of that weight in fluid ounces of half and half to make your cheese sauce.
  • Toss it All Together and Bake. Once your pasta, your mix-ins, and your sauce are all ready to go, toss them all together in an ovenproof casserole dish or skillet, cover it with foil, and bake it in your 325°F oven until it's just beginning to bubble, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Add a Little More Cheese on Top. Remember how you set aside 1/4 of the shredded cheese? Now's the time to add it to the top of your hot casserole. It can be the same kind of cheese you used for the sauce, or it can be a different kind.
  • And Finally, Broil the Top. Turn your broiler on and pop your freshly cheese-topped casserole underneath its flame. Stay close by! (Let's just say I have good reasons for never walking away from something that's in the broiler.)

  • Drain your pasta well. Mix in 3 cups of your sauce and the ricotta/cauliflower mixture. Top with the remaining cup of sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil* and set on a foil-lined baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil from casserole and continue baking for 15 minutes, or until golden and bubbly. Enjoy!

  • Cheesy Baked Pasta with Cauliflower. This baked pasta is super-kid-friendly. (They won't be able to detect the cauliflower!) View Recipe.
  • Butternut Squash Baked Pasta. The assignment: A satisfying, creamy, crave-worthy baked pasta that would still be delicious without (most of) the cheese.
  • Baked Pasta alla Norma. Cheesy, saucy baked pasta is even more fun when you can slice it into wedges. View Recipe.
  • Manicotti. This manicotti recipe is made with delicate crepes instead of dried pasta, and the result is something heavenly. View Recipe.
  • Greens and Cheese Lasagna. A decent amount of béchamel keeps this tomato-less lasagna moist as it cools. View Recipe.
  • BA’s Best Macaroni and Cheese. Don’t be alarmed if the sauce looks thin at first: It will continue to thicken as it bakes with the noodles. This recipe also easily doubles—because one can't have too much mac 'n' cheese.
  • BA’s Best Baked Ziti. We know ricotta is a traditional addition, but it has a tendency to get dry and grainy when baked. Our update uses a creamy Parmesan béchamel, in addition to a tangy tomato sauce, which together make for a super flavorful finished dish—that won’t dry out in the oven.
  • Mushroom and Burrata Lasagnette. Listen, this dish is indulgent and makes a bit more than two responsible adults should finish in one sitting. But for crying out loud, live a little.
  • No-Boil Mac and Cheese. Skip a step when making mac and cheese by not precooking the pasta. Instead, mix the dried pasta with a thinner-than-usual bèchamel sauce, and it will bake perfectly in just 30 minutes.
  • Baked Pasta with Merguez and Harissa-Spiked Sauce. We stole your nonna’s ziti and took it on a self-discovery tour of Middle-Eastern flavors. Sorry—it doesn’t want to come home.
