This is seriously the best turkey chili recipe you will ever make! Hearty but lean, a bowl of this chili will warm you up without piling on the calories. Make a big batch and freeze some so you can have chili whenever you need a soul-soothing meal!

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds lean ground turkey
1 sweet onion, finely chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 (28oz) can black beans, drained
1 (15oz) can kidney or pinto beans
1 (28oz) can crushed tomatoes
1 (15oz) can petite diced tomatoes
1 yellow bell pepper, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 yellow pepper, chopped
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoon hot sauce
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Toppings: Sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, green onions, limes

Steps:

  • In a large Dutch oven or heavy bottomed pot, heat the olive oil, over medium high heat, until shimmering. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 8 minutes. Remove with a slottled spoon and reserve.
  • Add more olive oil if needed and add the onions and garlic. Saute until softened and fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the peppers and cook until softened, 2 more minutes.
  • Return the browned turkey to the pot and add the remaining ingredients. Stir until combined and bring to a boil.
  • Once the chili is boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 45 to 60 minutes or until it thickens. Taste and adjust seasonings, as needed.
  • Serve immediately, garnished with your desired toppings!

My husband and I created this recipe together. He won a chili cook-off with this recipe at work. We always use venison, but you can use ground beef or turkey.

1 lb ground beef or 1 lb ground turkey
2 onions, diced
1 green pepper, diced
1 tablespoon jalapeno, finely chopped
1 (14 ounce) can Mexican-style tomatoes (like Rotel)
2 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 tablespoons cumin
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika (smoked if you can find it)
1 (14 ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 (14 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup water
sour cream
cheddar cheese
green onion

Steps:

  • In a medium Dutch oven over medium-high heat add the olive oil. Add the ground meat and cook, breaking up into pieces, until browned. Add the onions, bell pepper and jalapeno and cook until softened. Drain excess grease.
  • Add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, cumin, chili powder, salt, cayenne, paprika and 1 cup water. Mix to combine.
  • Add the kidney beans and black beans, mix and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 1-2 hours.
  • Serve with desired toppings.

1 cup dried pinto bean
1/2 cup dried black beans
1/2 cup dried red kidney beans
6 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans chicken broth
2 large onions (1 chopped, 1 quartered)
4 large garlic cloves
3 celery ribs, cut into thirds
1 -2 jalapeno
1 green pepper, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
1 yellow pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon paprika
2 teaspoons dried ancho chile powder
1 teaspoon granulated garlic
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 tablespoon cracked black pepper
1 lb ground turkey (99% lean)

Steps:

  • Cook all dried beans together according to package directions. Set aside.
  • In a large Dutch oven, pour cans of tomatoes and chicken broth and turn heat on low.
  • In a food processor fitted with a metal blade - add garlic, celery, hot peppers, and the quartered onion. Add about a ladle full of some of the juice from the pot and process on high until smooth. Place into the pot with the chicken broth and tomato mixture. Next, add green pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper, chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, cumin, paprika, ancho chili powder, granulated garlic, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3-4 hours. Add in the beans during the last hour or so of cooking time.
  • In a large pan, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil on medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and fully cook. Stir turkey into the pot of chili right before serving.

1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

Season with chili powder, cumin, parsley, oregano, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaves. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 2 hours. Stir the chili occasionally as it simmers. Remove and discard bay leaves before serving.

You might not think of chili as an easy weeknight dish, but this turkey version from Pierre Franey will change your mind. It's fabulous, it's healthy and it can be ready in about a half hour. A combination of dark and white meat really adds depth and richness of flavor, so try to find a mix, but all white meat (or a mixture of ground beef and turkey) will yield a stellar batch too.

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 pounds ground turkey, white and dark combined
2 cups coarsely chopped onions
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
1 large sweet red pepper, cored, deveined and coarsely chopped
1 cup chopped celery
1 jalapeno pepper, cored, deveined and finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped, or 1 tablespoon, dried
2 bay leaves
3 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
3 cups canned diced tomatoes
2 cups chicken broth, fresh or canned
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
2 15-ounce cans of red kidney beans, drained
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup sour cream (optional)
Sliced lime for garnish (optional)

Steps:

  • Heat the oil over high heat in a large heavy pot and add the turkey meat. Cook until lightly browned, about 5 minutes, chopping down and stirring with the side of a heavy kitchen spoon to break up any lumps.
  • Add the onions, garlic, sweet pepper, celery, jalapeno pepper, oregano, bay leaves, chili powder and cumin. Stir to blend well. Cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add the tomatoes, chicken broth, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.
  • Add the drained beans and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes longer. Serve in bowls with cheddar cheese, and sour cream and lime wedges, if desired.

I served mine with some beautifully ripe slices of avocado that gives the final bowl another layer of silky richness. By the way, don't let the cocoa powder in our chili spice mixture throw you off! Steps:

  • Mix the ancho chile powder, paprika, cumin, salt, chipotle pepper, oregano, cocoa powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon in a bowl; set aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the ground turkey and garlic. Cook and stir until turkey is no longer pink, breaking up any large chunks, 7 to 8 minutes. Stir in the spice mixture. Cook until fragrant, 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato puree and water. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook until the turkey meat is broken down, about 1 hour. Stir in the beans, and continue to simmer until flavors have blended, 20 to 30 more minutes.
