- Blackstrap Molasses. Although blackstrap molasses is made from cane sugar, it is much more nutrient-dense than cane syrup or even regular molasses. Blackstrap molasses provides iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6, and selenium.
- Coconut Sugar. Coconut sugar can be a good source of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes including potassium, magnesium, and sodium. These keep your body’s fluid levels in balance and are important for a number of other functions as well.
- Date Sugar. Date sugar is one of the best all-natural, AIP diet alternatives to sugar. It comes from finely ground, dried dates. With date sugar, you get all the benefits of whole dates, including fiber, tannins, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals.
- Honey. Honey is an antioxidant-rich, whole-food, and autoimmune-friendly natural sweetener you can use in place of regular sugar. It’s a good source of vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, calcium, copper and various amino acids, making it a better alternative to artificial sweeteners or refined sugar.
- Maple Syrup. Maple syrup is not just for pancakes and waffles. It’s an excellent, AIP food swap for refined table sugar. This is one of the best natural sweeteners because it is full of B vitamins, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and potassium.

- Flour. Flour is at the base of so many products, yet most flour you can buy is overly-refined and chock full of gluten. When I wrote The Autoimmune Solution, finding a gluten-free, grain-free flour was very difficult.
- Dairy. One of the two most inflammatory foods (second only to gluten), dairy has no place in an autoimmune-friendly diet. Fortunately, there are a number of easy swaps you can make to replace the dairy in your recipes.
- Eggs (for baking) Eggs offer structure and stability to pastries, muffins, and brownies, so baking without them can take some getting used to. However, there are many unexpected AIP ingredients that can take the place of eggs.
- Vegetable Oil. In addition to being made from foods on The Myers Way® absolute “no” list, vegetable oils including canola, soybean, corn, and safflower are highly processed and full of inflammatory Omega 6s.
- Sugar. Although you’ll want to avoid all sugar during the first 30 days of The Myers Way® or any autoimmune protocol, once your health is restored, many people find that they can enjoy small amounts here and there if you know the right types to choose.

- Seaweed and Sea Vegetables. Iodine, found in seaweed and sea vegetables, is one of the two primary building blocks of thyroid hormone. As I explain in my book, The Thyroid Connection, if you don’t have enough iodine, your thyroid simply can’t produce its hormones.
- Beef, Chicken, and Other Animal Protein. Animal proteins are “complete” proteins, meaning they contain all 9 essential amino acids, which your body cannot produce on its own.
- Leafy Greens. Your thyroid and your entire immune system are dependent on a host of B vitamins to operate efficiently. Leafy greens such as kale, arugula, bok choy, spinach, and watercress are an excellent source of the B vitamins needed to support your immune system.
- Salmon. The Omega-3s found in salmon have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and fight systemic inflammation in the body that leads to diseases such as Hashimoto’s.
- Avocado. Avocados are extremely popular right now, and you can find them in everything from chocolate cakes to smoothies! They are technically a fruit, however, they are unique because they contain 15 grams of healthy fats and 20 different vitamins and minerals (including B vitamins, iron, zinc, vitamin K, and folate) that suppress inflammation and support your immune system.
