Final Model. The 2002 model was the final model for the Firebird WS6. It’s also widely considered to be the best and the fastest of them all. The car features the intake manifold from the LS6, which along with the Ram Air induction took its 5.7-liter LS1 to a total output of 325 horsepower and more.
Production Numbers. The early Firebird WS6s are extremely rare cars, as Pontiac didn’t record a great sales run during those times. However, there are an estimated 2,500 of the 31,000 Firebirds sold in 1996 that came equipped with the WS6 package.
Performance. Car and Driver tested out a WS6 Formula against a Chevrolet Camaro SS and a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra in 1996 and the car performed poorly. The Formula’s run of 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 102 mph was the slowest of the three.
Interior. The interior of the Firebird WS6 had a mixed reception. While some liked the curvy dashboard and the accompanying red instrument lighting, others didn’t think it was good enough.
Wheels And Brakes. The WS6 package ultimately improves the performance of the Firebird and as such requires a commensurate powerful means of bringing the car to a halt.
Cost. Upon its introduction in 1978, the WS6 performance package added an extra $324 over the standard Trans Am price. The package had an obvious effect on the car's performance, aided by added features which include larger tires, wider wheels, and a thicker rear sway bar.
Transmission And Suspension. With the introduction of the LS engine, the WS6 package understandably gained more power. And in 2001, a new camshaft and the LS6 intake from Chevrolet Corvette Z06 got added to the Firebird models, thereby increasing total output by 5 horsepower.
Dimensions. The coupe variant of the Firebird WS6 got built with a length of 193.8 inches, a width of 74.5 inches, and 52.0 inches on a wheelbase of 101.1 inches.
LS Engine. Pontiac powered the Trans Am and the Formula with the Gen II LT1 small-block V8 from 1992 to 1997 with a displacement of 5.7-liters. However, the Chevrolet C5 Corvette arrived in 1997 with one of the most sought-after engines ever made by GM, the LS V8.
Ram Air. Due to a low impact on its sales, GM took the WS6 package off the market in 1992, after it had been a standard feature on the Trans Am GTA and Firebird Formula since 1987.
