Traditionally used for making burritos, tostadas, and quesadillas, tortillas can also be served in place of bread at dinner or as a sandwich wrap.

4 (8-inch) tortillas
Olive oil
Toppings, grated Gouda cheese and roasted red-pepper strips; sliced spinach and goat-cheese rounds; mango chutney, shredded cheddar cheese, and thinly sliced red onion; or hummus, sliced cherry tomatoes, and chopped chives
Salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place tortillas on a nonstick or lightly oiled baking sheet. Layer each tortilla with desired toppings.
  • Drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.
  • Bake until tortillas are crisp and toppings are heated through, about 10 minutes.

Six 6-inch corn tortillas
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F.
  • Brush the tortillas with the oil on both sides and arrange on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake until golden brown in spots and crisp, about 10 minutes. Let cool.

10 Minute Oven Baked Tostadas image

Homemade Tostadas with Baked Tostada Shells take minutes to make and are so much better for you than frying. Just add your favorite toppings!

6 Corn tortillas
1 tablespoon Canola oil (or any neutral oil, or cooking spray)
pinch Salt
Your favorite tostada toppings: refried beans, chicken, beef, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, etc.

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.
  • Arrange as many tortillas as will fit on the baking sheet without overlapping. (I can get 6 on mine - if you need more than that, bake in batches or bake two sheets at a time, rotating halfway through).
  • Brush both sides of the tortillas lightly with oil and sprinkle with salt.
  • Bake for about 8 minutes, flipping the tortillas over about halfway through. You could also use a wire rack and omit the flipping.
  • Remove from the oven and transfer to a paper towel lined tray to cool.*
  • Serve immediately with your favorite toppings, or cool completely and store in a tightly sealed contained for 3-4 days.

A healthier way to make tostadas and better tasting. The simple secret to making crispy tostadas is baking the corn tortillas instead of frying.

½ teaspoon garlic salt
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin, or to taste
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ pound ground beef
½ cup chopped sweet onion, or more to taste
1 clove garlic, minced
6 corn tortillas
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups refried beans
2 cups shredded lettuce, or as desired
1 ½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 tomato, diced

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Mix garlic salt, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin, and black pepper together in a small bowl.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef, onion, and garlic in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease. Keep warm while preparing tostada shells.
  • Brush oil over both sides of tortillas and arrange on a baking sheet.
  • Bake tortillas in preheated oven until crisped on top, about 5 minutes. Flip tortillas and continue baking until other side crisps, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  • Heat refried beans in a saucepan over medium-low, stirring regularly until hot, about 5 minutes (see Cook's Note).
  • Divide refried beans between tostadas and spread over one side of each; spoon ground beef mixture over the beans. Top each tostada with lettuce, Cheddar cheese, and diced tomato.
