WITCH FINGER COOKIES

Witch Finger Cookies image

Go all out this Halloween with this spooky Witch Finger Cookies from Food Network.

Provided by Giada De Laurentiis

Categories     dessert

Time 2h

Yield 28 finger cookies

Number Of Ingredients 10

Vegetable oil cooking spray
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
28 large sliced almonds
1/2 cup raspberry jam

Steps:

  • Place an oven rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Spray a rimmed baking sheet with vegetable oil cooking spray or line with a silicone baking mat. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until smooth. Gradually beat in the flour mixture until a dough forms.
  • Using about1 1/2 tablespoons of dough at a time, roll the dough between your palms into 5-inch-long fingers about 1/2-inch thick. Firmly press a sliced almond into the end of each finger to make fingernails. Make several horizontal cuts, about 1/4 inch deep and 1/2 inch long, in the center of each finger to make knuckles. Press the dough on either side of the cuts to shape the knuckles. Arrange the fingers on the prepared baking sheet and bake until light golden, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer the fingers to a wire rack and cool completely.
  • In a small saucepan, heat the jam over low heat until warm, about 2 minutes. Dip the blunt ends of the fingers in the warm jam and arrange on a platter.

SPOOKY WITCHES' FINGERS

Spooky Witches' Fingers image

This is a traditional Christmas cookie recipe that we have had in our family for years. All I did was change the shape to make them look like fingers for our annual Halloween party. The cookies make a great conversation piece. My guests loved them!

Provided by Sandra

Categories     Desserts     Cookies

Time 1h15m

Yield 60

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup whole almonds
1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel

Steps:

  • Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.
  • Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.
  • Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

WITCHY-POO FINGERS

Witchy-Poo Fingers image

According to the Canadian Living Test Kitchen, this is their most requested Hallowe'en recipe. I haven't made them, but think I will this year. Sounds ghoulishly good!

Provided by Lennie

Categories     Dessert

Time 40m

Yield 60 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup icing sugar (sift through a sieve after measuring to remove lumps)
1 large egg (room temp)
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup whole blanched almond (you need about 60)
red decorating gel, as needed

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, beat butter sugar, egg and extracts together.
  • In another mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Beat dry ingredients into butter mixture, then cover bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F; have cookie sheets, lined with parchment paper, ready.
  • Remove only 1/4 of the dough from refrigerator (leave rest refrigerated to stay cold); measure out heaping teaspoonfuls and shape into fingers.
  • Press an almond firmly into the end of each"finger" to make the fingernail.
  • Below the almond and at the opposite end of the finger, press in dough to create knuckle halfway down; using the back of a table knife, make indents into the knuckle (look at your own fingers to get an idea of what this should look like).
  • If you want really big ugly fingers with two gnarled knuckles, use about a tbsp of dough per cookie.
  • Place on paper-lined cookie sheets and bake in preheated oven until a pale golden colour--about 20 to 25 minutes.
  • After first sheet goes into the oven, remove more dough from the fridge to make more fingers.
  • When cookies are done, remove from oven and let cool for three minutes.
  • Carefully lift up almond from each finger and squeeze some red decorating gel onto nail bed, then press almond back into place; the red gel will creepily ooze out.
  • Transfer to a rack and let cool completely.

1 cup powdered sugar (confectionery)
1 egg
1 teaspoon Almond extract
1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

green food coloring (few drops)
1 tube red decorator gel

WITCH FINGER BREADSTICKS

Witch Finger Breadsticks image

These eerie breadsticks, made with store-bought pizza dough, get their flavor from Italian seasoning and sesame seeds. Turning each rope of dough in the middle forms a gnarly finger knuckle which, paired with a green olive "nail," helps to create a haunting and delicious appetizer!

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     appetizer

Time 35m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
All-purpose flour, for dusting
1 pound refrigerated pizza dough, at room temperature
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
5 pimento-stuffed olives, halved lengthwise
1/2 cup store-bought marinara sauce, warmed, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.
  • Whisk the oil, Italian seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper in a small bowl.
  • Lightly flour a work surface and divide the dough into 10 equal portions with a bench scraper or chef's knife. Roll each portion into a 10-inch rope. Twist each rope in the middle and arrange on the prepared baking sheets. (Each twist will look like a gnarly witch knuckle.)
  • Brush the breadsticks with the seasoned oil and sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Firmly press an olive half on the end of each breadstick to stick to the dough. Bake until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with warm marinara sauce.

WITCHES FINGERS

Witches Fingers image

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     appetizer

Time 40m

Yield about 36 witches fingers

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup water
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 large eggs
Pinch cayenne
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 cup grated Cheddar, (about 4 ounces)
1 large egg yolk
Whole unblanched almonds
Kosher salt

Steps:

  • Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Put the water, butter, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking until the butter and sugar melts. Remove pan from the heat and sift the flour into the pan. Stir the dough together with a wooden spoon. Return to the heat and stir constantly until pulls away from the sides of the pan and is slightly shiny, about 3 minutes.
  • Transfer the dough to a medium bowl, and beat until cooled, about 2 minutes. Add the cayenne, and whole eggs, 1 at a time, incorporating each 1 thoroughly before adding the next. Mix in the mustard and cheese.
  • Put 1/4-inch plain tip in a pastry bag, and spoon the dough into the bag. Pipe 3 1/2-inch long thin finger-like shapes onto prepared pans. Beat the egg yolk with a tablespoon of water and dab or brush the tops of each witches' finger with it. Lay an almond on the end of each witches finger so that it looks like a nail, sprinkle fingers with kosher salt.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F. Continue baking until the fingers are golden brown and slightly crisp, about 5 minutes more. Cool on a rack.

  • Dip or brush the almonds with the black frosting then place on one of the prepared baking sheets and allow to dry. If you use a brush make sure it is food safe quality.
  • Combine green candy melts and 2 tbs coconut oil (or shortening) in a microwave safe bowl. I recommend heating for 30 seconds in the microwave on 50% power, stirring, and repeat until melted. You can even take it out of the microwave when there are still a few lumps and let is sit for about a minute then stir. The residual heat should melt the remaining candy melts. If the candy melts are still too thick stir in more coconut oil 1 tbs at a time until your reach your desired consistency. You don’t want to overheat the candy melts and cause it to burn and get clumpy.
  • Break pretzel rods in half if they are really long. Dip the pretzel rods into the melted candy melts and place on the 2nd prepared baking sheet.

  • In a food processor or bowl, whirl or rub together butter, cheese, flour, and cornmeal until the mixture has the texture of wet sand. Add egg and whirl or stir with a fork until dough holds together.
  • Scrape dough onto a sheet of cooking paper or parchment, 12 to 14 in. wide and about 14 in. long. Top with another equal-sized sheet of paper and pat dough into a 1/2-in.-thick circle. Wrap in plastic and freeze 15 minutes, or refrigerate up to 3 days.
  • Roll dough into a rectangle about 8 in. wide and 10 in. long, working carefully to avoid creases in paper. Return to freezer for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°.
  • Peel off top paper and use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 30 strips, each about 1/2 in. thick and 5 in. long. Place each strip on a large baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt to taste, then use your fingers to round the top of each strip into a fingertip shape. Use a sharp knife to score shallow "knuckle" lines in each finger, then press an almond "nail" into the tip. If you like, bend each finger in places to make it look knobby.
