  • High mercury fish. Mercury is a highly toxic element. It has no known safe level of exposure and is most commonly found in polluted water. In higher amounts, it can be toxic to your nervous system, immune system, and kidneys.
  • Undercooked or raw fish. This one will be tough for you sushi fans, but it’s an important one. Raw fish, especially shellfish, can cause several infections.
  • Undercooked, raw, and processed meat. Some of the same issues with raw fish affect undercooked meat, too. Eating undercooked or raw meat increases your risk of infection from several bacteria or parasites, including Toxoplasma, E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella.
  • Raw eggs. Raw eggs can be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria. Symptoms of salmonella infections include fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.
  • Organ meat. Organ meat is a great source of a variety of nutrients. These include iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, and copper — all of which are good for you and baby.
  • Caffeine. You may be one of the millions of folks who love their daily cups of coffee, tea, soft drinks, or cocoa. You’re definitely not alone when it comes to our love of caffeine.
  • Raw sprouts. Your healthy salad choice may not be free from rogue ingredients, either. Raw sprouts, including alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts, may be contaminated with Salmonella.
  • Unwashed produce. The surface of unwashed or unpeeled fruits and vegetables may be contaminated with several bacteria and parasites. These include Toxoplasma, E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, which can be acquired from the soil or through handling.
  • Unpasteurized milk, cheese, and fruit juice. Raw milk, unpasteurized cheese, and soft-ripened cheeses can contain an array of harmful bacteria, including Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter.
  • Alcohol. It’s advised to completely avoid drinking alcohol when pregnant, as it increases the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth. Even a small amount can negatively impact your baby’s brain development.

8 FOODS TO AVOID WHEN YOU'RE PREGNANT – CLEVELAND CLINIC

  • Certain kinds of fish. Many kinds of fish are really good for you, and some of them are especially good for people who are pregnant. The thing is, there truly are a whole lot of fish in the sea (not to mention in lakes and rivers, too, of course).
  • Processed meats. Certain meats are best avoided during pregnancy, Dr. Chien says. That’s because they carry a higher risk of the dangerous listeria bacteria.
  • Soft cheese. That queso at your favorite Mexican joint should be put on hold while you’re pregnant. Soft cheeses are most likely to be unpasteurized. Pasteurization is the process by which certain foods are treated with heat to kill off certain common bacteria.
  • Unpasteurized juices. Similar to soft cheeses, some juices and ciders may be unpasteurized and should be avoided when you’re pregnant. These drinks are most commonly found at some health food stores and farmers’ markets.
  • Raw or runny eggs. In general, it’s best to avoid eating foods with raw eggs because of potential exposure to salmonella. Researchers say you’re not at an increased risk for salmonella when you’re pregnant, but its effects can be worse during your pregnancy.
  • Foods with high amounts of salt. We get plenty of salt in the foods that we eat. Salt causes your body to retain water, so Dr. Chien recommends that people who are pregnant eat salty foods in moderation.
  • Alcohol. This one shouldn’t come as a surprise. Drinking alcohol affects fetal development and has lifelong consequences, including behavioral, physical and learning problems.
  • Large amounts of caffeine. Yes, you can still have your daily morning coffee, but you may need to cut back on caffeine while you’re pregnant. Researchers say caffeine may cause the blood vessels in your uterus to constrict, which lowers blood supply to the fetus and inhibits fetal growth.
