This is my original carrot bacon recipe that started an internet craze! It's salty and sweetly smoky, really delicious, and easily made from carrots and five other basic ingredients. Try it for yourself!

1 large carrot
1 tbsp tahini
1 tbsp rapeseed oil ((AKA canola))
1 tbsp maple syrup
1½ tsp all-purpose soy sauce ((or tamari, or coconut aminos))
1 tsp liquid smoke
food processor ((use the slicing disc))
mandoline
Y peeler
box grater
cookie sheet
silicone baking mat
baking parchment

Steps:

  • Peel and top & tail the carrot, then slice very thinly.
  • Blitz the rest of the ingredients together for 20 seconds or so, until you have a thick marinade.
  • Place the carrot and marinade into a dish, mix together so that all of the carrot slices are coated, and set to one side for 30 minutes.
  • Heat your oven to 200°C/400°F
  • Place the carrot strips side-by-side on a cookie sheet (lined with a silicone baking mat or baking parchment if it's not non-stick), spread a little of the remaining marinade evenly over the strips, and then bake for 15-20 minutes, depending on how crispy you want your 'bacon' to be.
  • Remove from the oven, and enjoy your delicious plant-based bacony treat!

7 large carrots
1/2 cup vegetable broth
1 teaspoon Bragg's Liquid Amino Acids
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit. Slice carrots into thin strips using either a mandolin or food processor to keep them uniform. In a small bowl, whisk together broth, Braggs, olive oil, liquid smoke, and smoked paprika. Then, in a shallow dish, toss sliced carrots with broth combination until carrots are completely coated. Arrange carrot slices on a foil-wrapped baking sheet so that they don't overlap. Put in oven and bake for 7 minutes. Pull baking sheet from the oven and flip carrots. Put baking sheet in the oven to bake for another 7-8 minutes. It might take more or less time depending on how thick or thin you sliced your carrots. You'll know your carrot bacon is done when the edges are crispy and the center of each slice looks dry. Move carrot bacon to a plate with a paper towel to soak up any extra oil. Salt and pepper to taste. Let cool to room temperature before crumbling over a salad or putting in a sandwich. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. *A less healthy version, but also delish, would be to deep fry!

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 tablespoons olive oil

Steps:

  • With a mandoline or vegetable peeler, cut carrot into long, thin strips. In a shallow bowl, whisk maple syrup, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and liquid smoke. Dip carrot slices into syrup mixture, allowing excess to drip off., In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Cook carrot slices in batches until browned, 4-6 minutes, turning once.
