Smothered Turkey Wings, Legs, or Thighs image

Make this delicious smothered turkey recipe with legs, wings, or thighs. Smothered with a flavorful, perfectly seasoned homemade gravy, this turkey recipe is best served with a classic southern cornbread or collard greens.

2 lbs turkey wings (legs or thighs)
3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp butter
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground sage
1 tsp dry thyme
2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 cups chicken or turkey broth
1/2 cup half & half
1 small onion (chopped)
1 small bell pepper (chopped)
2 stalks of celery (chopped)
salt & pepper for taste

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 F.
  • Rinse the turkey under cool water, then pat dry.
  • Combine all of the seasonings: Salt, pepper, thyme,sage,onion powder, and garlic powder.
  • Season the turkey with the seasonings, and rub all over.
  • Sprinkle the all purpose flour into a large freezer bag, then place the turkey into the bag.
  • Close the bag, and shake until all of the turkey is nicely coated with the flour( don't toss out the excess flour).
  • Place a large pan on the stovetop and add in 3 tbsp of vegetable oil, and 2 tbsp of butter.
  • Melt the butter, and heat up the oil over medium heat.
  • Once the oil & butter is nice and hot, add in the turkey.
  • Brown all surfaces of the turkey, then remove from the pan, and put the turkey into a large bake dish.
  • Head back to the stovetop and toss in all of the chopped vegetables.
  • Season the vegetables with salt and pepper to your preference, and cook the veggies, over medium heat, until they are translucent.
  • Once done turn off the heat, and add the veggies into the bake dish with the turkey, but reserve the oil/butter mixture.
  • Cover the bake dish with foil, and bake the turkey for 2 hours ( on 325 F).

4 lb turkey wings
olive oil
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon poultry seasoning
1 tablespoon parsley
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 celery sitcks (diced)
1/2 green bell pepper (diced)
1/2 white onion diced
mushrooms (dice (optional))
6-8 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup whole milk (warmed)
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (warmed)
salt (pepper, parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, to taste.)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 275 F.
  • Combine seasonings.
  • Brush wings evenly with olive oil to coat.( Could also use melted butter)
  • Sprinkle wings generously with seasonings, massaging seasonings into wings. Add more olive oil to help distribute the seasoning if needed. (use as much of the seasoning as desired)
  • *optional step for more flavor* Cover wings and let marinate for 4 hours or overnight.
  • Place the wings in a roasting pan and over tightly with foil.
  • Bake for 2 1/2 hours.
  • *optional step for a crisp skin* Uncover for the last few minutes and broil both sides to crisp up the skin.
  • Drain the excess juices from pan (you could also use some of the juices for broth if desired.)
  • Line the pan with foil and place turkey into the pan. Set aside.
  • To make the gravy, melt butter in deep skillet.
  • Add chopped veggies and sautéed until almost tender.
  • Whisk in flour and cook over medium heat until flour is golden and no longer has a raw flour taste.
  • Whisk in chicken broth, milk and heavy cream.
  • Simmer until gravy has thickened to your liking.
  • Pour the gravy over the turkey, cover and bake for 45 minutes to an hour.
  • Serve immediately with rice.

5 turkey wings
1 small onion, chopped
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 ½ cups water, divided
1 (10.75 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Place turkey wings and onion in a casserole dish; sprinkle seasoned salt, poultry seasoning, black pepper, and garlic on both sides of each wing. Pour 1/2 cup water into the casserole dish. Cover casserole dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until browned, 1 hour.
  • Stir cream of mushroom soup and 1 cup water together in a bowl; pour over turkey wings into casserole dish and return to oven, uncovered.
  • Continue baking until brown and tender, 1 hour.

3 turkey wings
1 (10.75 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
water, or as needed to cover
1 (10 ounce) package saffron rice (such as Mahatma®)

Steps:

  • Place turkey wings, cream of mushroom soup, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and seasoned salt into a 6-quart slow cooker. Pour in enough water to cover; stir ingredients. Cook on High for 6 hours or on Low for 8 hours.
  • Stir rice into mixture; continue to cook until rice is tender, 15 to 20 more minutes.
