TRADITIONAL MEXICAN CASCARONES

Traditional Mexican Cascarones image

Mexican Traditon! These beautiful little eggs are for celebrating. They are empty egg shells with confetti in them. They are to be cracked over someone's head or otherwise and the colorful confetti is revealed by falling out of the egg. They are much fun at festivities such as Easter, birthday parties, or just a day of celebration. For a short time, I lived with a lady named Lupita in San Antonio, Texas. She was my good friend Mona's mother. In the six months or so that I lived there I was steeped in some Mexican traditions and this was one of them. The whole family was brought in to help make these and you stayed up till 3 or 4 in the morning making them. It was the same when Lupita made Tamales. lol When I make some with my nephews I will take my own pics. These pics are from the internet, so you could get an idea of what they look like. I posted a pic of Lupita, Mona and me that I finally found in a box of pictures from Texas. I hope you enjoy and share too if you make these with your family.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 - dozen egg shells, cracked in half as even to half as possible, cleaned out and dried out
1 - bag of colorful confetti or you can make your own confetti too.
- egg dyes, colored markers, regular paint or even spray paint
2 - dozen small, cut pieces of tissue paper
1 bottle(s) of glue
2 - foam brushes or any small paint brush
- a couple of kids and adult to assemble

Steps:

  • Now, there are different ways to start out making this & I am going to share one way. That is when you are making eggs for breakfast or baking try and crack them in the center, so that you have two nice half shells. Set them in an egg carton to rinse out and dry them out. You can dry them out by placing them in a low heat oven as well. Start collecting the egg shells for making these wonderful party favors. (My friend Mona & I worked together at a MExican restaurant and she learned how to crack the eggs perfectly in half two at a time on the side of a bucket. She would save these eggs for her mother, Lupita to make Cascarones. Lupita would sell them at her church during Easter time. She would make several 1,000 of them. Of course, with help. :-)
  • Here comes the fun part. Either color them as you would Easter Eggs or which ever way is easiest. Then, place some confettie inside the egg shell. (I love this painted picture! It so reminds me of all of us sitting around the table. I would be the little guy with his head on the table sleeping. LOL) It is called:Cascarones Gouache 1989 Collection of Gilberto Cárdenas and Deanna RodrÌguez, Austin, TX
  • Next, take a piece of the tissue paper and glue on top of egg shell. Let dry and now you are ready to celebrate with your Cascarones. YEAH!!!!
