SOUTHERN FRIED GREEN TOMATOES RECIPE

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe image

This Southern Fried Green Tomatoes recipe is quick and easy and super crispy. This summer appetizer can be made in an air fryer or on the stove top.

Provided by Caitlyn Erhardt

Categories     Appetizer     Side Dish

Time 21m

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 Large Green Tomatoes
1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour
1/2 Tsp Sea Salt
1 1/2 Tsp Ground Black Pepper
1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (Optional)
1 Tsp Lawry's Seasoned Salt
Vegetable Oil (For Frying)
1/2 Cup Mayonnaise
2-4 Tbsp Hot Sauce (Tabasco or Frank's work best)
1/2 Tsp Horseradish
1/2 Tsp Ground Black Pepper
1/4 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (Optional)

Steps:

  • In a large shallow bowl combine flour and spices. Whisk or stir to combine and set aside.
  • .Use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife and cutting board to slice each tomato into 1/4 inch pieces (no larger). Lay the sliced green tomatoes out on a large cookie sheet or plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Next dredge each slice in the flour mixture until coated shaking off the excess. Return to the cookie sheet and let sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes the tomatoes will begin to soak up some of the flour mixture. Once this happens dredge the tomatoes through the flour mixture a second time shaking off the excess.
  • Add vegetable oil to a large deep skillet and heat over medium heat. You want the oil about an inch deep. Once the oil is shimmering, add your green tomatoes in and fry for 3-5 minutes per side until they are brown and crispy.
  • Once golden brown remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate and continue to fry in batches until all the tomatoes are fried. Serve warm with hot mayo sauce.

Patrick and Gina Neely's Fried Green Tomatoes from Food Network go best with a tangy buttermilk sauce.

Provided by Patrick and Gina Neely : Food Network

Categories     appetizer

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 19

Oil
4 green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch rings
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon garlic powder
4 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 cups panko bread crumbs
Pinch cayenne pepper
Pinch paprika
Buttermilk Dipping Sauce, recipe follows
1 cup apple cider
1 tablespoon brown sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Neelys BBQ sauce
1 lime, juiced
4 scallions, sliced thin
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • In a deep-fryer, preheat oil to 350 degrees F.
  • Season tomatoes, on both sides, with salt and pepper. Place flour and garlic powder in a shallow dish. In another shallow dish, beat eggs with the milk. In another dish, mix bread crumbs with cayenne and paprika. Dredge tomatoes through the flour, then the eggs, and then through the bread crumbs. Add only a few pieces to the fryer at a time, so they can cook evenly, about 2 to 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve with Buttermilk Dipping Sauce:
  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the apple cider and brown sugar. Allow to reduce until thick and syrupy. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  • In a medium bowl, add buttermilk, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce and lime juice and whisk well. Add in the scallions and the apple cider mixture. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve with Fried Green Tomatoes.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

Fried Green Tomatoes image

Fried green tomatoes are delectably moist in the inside, deliciously crunchy and crispy on the outside. Here's my take on this traditional southern recipe.

Provided by Cheryl Magyar

Time 16m

Number Of Ingredients 6

4-5 medium sized green tomatoes, still firm to the touch
1 cup flour
2 large eggs
1 cup cornmeal
salt, to taste
lard or vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Wash and slice your tomatoes into thick slices, not less than 1/4-inch, not more than 1/2-inch.
  • Heat plenty of lard or vegetable oil over medium heat in your favorite thick-bottomed skillet.
  • In the meantime, set flour aside in a small bowl or plate. Whisk eggs in another, and use the third plate for cornmeal.
  • Dip the tomato slices first in flour, then the egg mixture, lastly in the cornmeal. Make sure the last layer is nice and thick for a spectacular crunch.
  • Once the lard/oil is hot, place the coated tomatoes one by one into the hot fat and fry until they are golden brown. If they cook too fast, they will be crunchy inside and out. So, don't rush. Cook them slowly enough, about 3 minutes on the first side, before flipping.
  • When done frying, place them on a wire rack to chill.

BUTTERMILK FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

Buttermilk Fried Green Tomatoes image

I did a search and came up with many fried green tomato recipes on here, but this one is different in that it uses buttermilk, and no cornmeal. Culinary lore says that ripe red tomatoes felt so much like human skin that eating them was considered improperly erotic. In any case, there was something suspect about this New World member of the nightshade family that the Spaniards first brought back to Europe. One solution to it's naughty nature was to eat green tomatoes, which are firm and not nearly as sweet as ripe ones. This version is delicious. Cook times are guestimates.

Provided by Stinkerbell

Categories     Vegetable

Time 40m

Yield 12-15 slices

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 eggs
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 tablespoon self rising flour, plus
1 1/2 cups self rising flour
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1 teaspoon black pepper, divided
3 large green tomatoes, cut into 1/4 inch slices
vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix together the eggs and buttermilk.
  • Whisk in the 1 TBS flour, 1/2 the salt and 1/2 the pepper.
  • Soak the tomatoes in this liquid for about half an hour.
  • Whisk together the remaining flour, salt and pepper.
  • Heat about 1 inch of oil to 350*F in a heavy skillet.
  • (I use my cast iron one).
  • Dredge the tomato slices, one at a time in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess.
  • Fry the slices in hot oil.
  • Do NOT crowd.
  • (slices should not overlap as they cook).
  • Fry each side until it begins to turn brown.
  • Turn in the oil and fry until golden brown and crisp.
  • Drain on paper towel.
  • Salt to taste.
  • Serve with tomato chutney.
  • Yummy!

21 GREEN TOMATO RECIPES FOR USING UNRIPE TOMATOES
21-green-tomato-recipes-for-using-unripe-tomatoes image

From ruralsprout.com
Estimated Reading Time 9 mins
  • Fried Green Tomatoes. Fried green tomatoes are a classic. Simply slice green tomatoes that are fully sized but not yet ripened fully and coat each slice in egg and flour, cornmeal and breadcrumbs.
  • Pickled Green Tomatoes. Pickling green tomatoes is a great way to make a tangy, slightly sweet, slightly spicy treat that can be used in much the same way as bread and butter pickles.
  • Green Tomato Fritters. Another way to fry up those green tomatoes is in fritters. Simply combine fresh green tomatoes with a batter mix of your choosing – like the spiced chickpea flour and rice flour batter described in the recipe in the link below.
  • Fried Green Tomato Burritos. You can add green tomato slices to a wide range of wraps and sandwiches. Why not mix things up a little and make some delicious fried green tomato burritos?
  • Green Tomato Relish. No matter how busy you get in the kitchen cooking home-made meals each night, you may still find that you have too many green tomatoes to use up right away.
  • Zingy Green Tomato Salsa. Another way to preserve your green tomatoes for longer, or simply to use up a lot of them in one go, is to make some green tomato salsa to accompany a wide range of different dishes – from burgers and sandwiches to wraps and tacos.
  • Green Tomato Ketchup. If you are a “ketchup with everything” sort of family, then what better way to use up those green tomatoes than by using them to make this handy condiment.
  • Green Tomato Shakshuka. You can use either green tomatoes or tomatillos in this shakshuka recipe. Sometimes also referred to as ‘eggs in purgatory’, this fiery dish combines eggs with a base mix of tomatoes, garlic, chillies, and other seasoning.
  • Green Tomato Curry. World cuisine offers plenty of inspiration when it comes to making full use of the green tomatoes from your garden. Another idea for a flavoursome dish is to make some sort of curry from your green tomatoes.
  • Green Tomato Chilli. You could also consider adding green tomatoes to a chilli. The recipe linked to below is for meat eaters, but you could easily also substitute the ground beef for a vegan and vegetarian friendly option, or omit the mince altogether and simply use some beans.
